Cafe Escadrille Ratings and Reviews
I've been to Café Escadrille many times and the food is delicious. The bar is great, but you can NEVER get a seat. If you are lucky enough to catch it right, you will enjoy a lively bar and good service. We were seated right on time for our reservation, but unfortunately it was in a different room than I had ever been in, which was very bright and busy. We were placed right near a busy, loud, swinging door service area. We had stated on our reservation that it was an anniversary dinner, and that was acknowledged by the hostess, but didn't seem to matter when it came to their seating choice for us. Our server seemed stressed, rushed and slightly disinterested. Our food was timely and delicious, and it did not disappoint. If the service and atmosphere had been half as good as the food, it would have been a wonderful experience!
We go to the Cafe Escadrille several times a year, usually for special occasions. We love to sit in the Gourmet room because the ambience is nicer than the main room, but we were disappointed that they have discontinued the special gourmet menu. Nevertheless, the new HUGE menu has something for everyone, with lots of combination dinners.
We ate there on 11/11/17, and the food was exceptional! My husband and I both ordered the filet mignon and king crab legs combo. The steak was cooked to perfection--medium rare, and the crab legs were already cracked and easy to eat. Delicious! We went again with friends on 11/18/17, and my husband and I loved our meals so much the week before that we ordered them again. This time the filet was cooked a little too much, more medium than medium rare. The main issue this time that was a disappointment was the service. The server was in such a rush that she never asked if anyone wanted water for the table, and barely stayed for a second to answer any questions. She just seemed curt and not very friendly. In the past the wait staff used to have such "polish" that it always felt like a very classy place. Now, even though the food is good, the wait staff just don't seem to have that savoir faire they used to.
My husband and I had a delightful anniversary dinner here. The lobster cocktail was wonderful and a nice change from shrimp. I had veal with lobster and my husband had steak, both were excellently prepared. The chocolate cake with coffee ice cream was a great ending to a wonderful day.
We typically go to the Capital Grille or North End yearly for our birthdays (4 of us) - this year, we decided to switch it up and I have to be honest, I would have preferred the Capital Grille. Two had fish which was just ok I was told, another person ordered rare filet and it was medium (no juice). I had a well done filet and sweet potato which was very good. We ordered a side of spinach which never showed up. I ordered crème brulee for dessert which was cold - the last time I had crème brulee it was warm and and the top was carmelized - this was cold and no carmelization on the top....perhaps you make it differently? All in all, it was ok.
Enjoyed our dinner at Cafe Escadrille. Started with a French kiss martini, which was delicious, and ordered the baked stuffed shrimp with filet and my husband ordered the NY strip. My husband enjoyed his steak, and my filet was tender and delicious but the shrimp was a bit fishy tasting. Ended with a cappuccino, and we shared the bread pudding which was outstanding. Great atmosphere here and the singer and piano player were very good. Will definitely go back.
My sister (in Malden) and we (Hopkinton) always meet at the Cafe Escadrille for lunch
and once we had a a total of 11 from the "McCarthy" clan get together for a special occasion.
It is by far our favorite restaurant. We have never been disappointed with the food, the drinks, the service, the atmosphere - everything is just the top of what a customer should expect - you have never disappointed!
Our server this time was Juan Carlos and he couldn't have been more informative nor considerate!
Took over 30 mins to take our order after being seated. Then they forgot half our order. Was very loud and the waitress was extremely rude. We used to go here weekly, now we are taking it out of our rotation. We're seared quickly with our reservation, then forgotten!
Are you kidding me?!
The decor was so old. Everything about it was old, not like antique, but just needs renovation, desperately.
The servers were sloppy. We saw one of them take a potato from one plate and with her bare hands, move it to another plate. Gross!
The food was mediocre. All of it. Even the bread.
And the prices are high.
So you do the math. We would never ever return to this place and it is amazing to us that it still exists.
It has been around 10 years since having dinner at the establishment and 5 years since I did my wife's baby shower at the conference section - the experience was disappointing. The steaks were completely bland / no flavor even with the sauces. The Alaskan King Crab was good and the Lobster that was experienced by my wife. With the Del Frisco's Grille - Burlington and also the Bancroft .. both are very good and with quality - cost is more but you have a higher percentage of satisfaction with these establishments. I don't want to be negative, the Cafe has some soul searching to do to evolve to compete. The waitress was fast and very efficient.
Clam chowder and creme brulee were exceptional above average in this meal. The salad, the calamari appetizer, and the seafood al fredo were average.
Best part of my meal. One of the best I have had.
Awesome desert. Custard was well done. Again, one if the best I have had
Ralph, our server, was exceptional. He had a natural sociability that made him part of the family. Very good waiter.
The noodles were over cooked but The seafood was quite good. Sauce was simple, which works for the seafood. Not overpowering. Scallops, shrimp and lobster meat was fresh.
I added pepper yo spice it up a little, as it was very bland. But seafood palates differ. Some like to taste the seafood. So no complaint.
Appetizer tasted like it was frozen. Did not taste fresh. The best part were the fresh peppers and onion added to the taste. The additions were the best part. Calamri was not great.
Average salad. Steak house type prep
Dinner was excellent as always at Cafe Escadrille! Our waitress was attentive and
very busy. The bar was a little slow, and one filet was cooked a little too rare, but the waitress
insisted we send it back, but we did not, and so no complaints there.
A prime rib, and 2 other filets were cooked perfectly. The scallops were delicious.
One of our favorite places to dine.
My wife (now deceased) and I enjoyed fine dinners at the Escadrille over the years. We often take friends and relatives on occasions of out-of-town visits to dine there. This occasion was to dine & visit with my nephew & his wife who traveled to NE from WA state for education & tourism. Only disappointment: No birthday surprise! (The occasion was noted on the reservation.) HCK
My wife and I have been dining at the Café Escadrille for more than twenty years, and it remains our favorite "go to" place for special occasions. We had the $90 chateaubriand for two at our last visit and it was outstanding. Andrew has served us during past visits and he remains a consummate professional. It was truly a memorable meal.
Food was fair at best. Bacon wrapped scallops were good. Pretty noisy and was seated at a 2 top with BARELY any room. Both my husband and I had a tough time getting in/out of our seats and we are in good shape. Probably won't be back. Expensive. Service was pretty good however.
Old school restaurant seems to be resting on their laurels. Entrees are overpriced considering quality. Shrimp scampi for $28 contained small to medium overcooked, tough shrimp and characterless pasta with barely perceptible taste of garlic. No vegetarian options but inexplicably a full sushi menu. Caesar salad was just OK but not made to order like in the past. Fried cauliflower appetizers ($11) was a huge disappointment with no more than 5 charred florets in a weak chili sauce. Very sad approximation of what used to be a high quality local institution.
This restaurant is top notch. There is a message on the menu that says that if they have the ingredients, they will make what is requested-- my wife liked the topping on one item, but wanted a different fish. The chef gladly accommodated. Service was terrific. Can't say enough 😃😃😃
