Cafe Des Architectes/CDA Ratings and Reviews
This is my third visit (I'm from Oregon) to this restaurant. One brunch and two dinners over the last two or three years.
This last (week night) visit was for dinner and first courses and entrées were perfect. Crab cakes are not to be missed. I had the pork tenderloins and they were perfect and nicely seasoned. My wife had the beet salad and vegetarian tortellini, which she enjoyed. On other visits we have shared a dessert but this time we didn't see anything that inspired us (maybe we were too full). But the after dinner coffee was full bodied and freshly made and the wine with dinner was excellent (don't remember the name from the quite large list).
Finally, the wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
A great spot for a French meal. I've had French cuisine (in France no less) and the food served was splendid and full of flavor. The sauce from the main course and desserts were amazing. Service was quick and were helpful when we asked for assistance.
The only thing is cost; definitely would go only on a special occasion possibly once a year. You do get what you pay for: 2 five-course meals, bottle of wine, and a rose to go.
Decided to try a new place and took advantage of the Chicago Restaurant Week special menu; totally worth it! The food was amazing, the portions were good and filling and the wine selection was perfect for dinner. I couldn't be happier with my choice. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends.
Went to CDA for restaurant week. The Pre Fixe menu was one of the best I saw on this year's list. Call me a sucker, but I think restaurant week is about showcasing what's good at a restaurant. In this case, the food really was excellent, but it was overshadowed by the shoddy service. Miscues on the food, no check-ins, clearing the table as the next course was delivered, reaching across the table and stacking plates, a three-course dinner service that was paced out to last about 35 minutes (this is excluding the 10 minutes we sat before anyone acknowledged us)...none of this fits into my definition of the fine dining experience. Unfortunately, the consistency in the service extends through the whole house. I wrote the GM (weeks before I wrote this review) to share my experience, ask if I was off base in my perception, but I received no reply. Given the rest of the reviews on the service, I seem to be in good company. I'll say here what I said to the GM: It's a shame to see the work of the chefs degraded by the quality of the service.
i read about this restaurant at the CS few years ago. They recommended it as a special place. by my experience it was not real special place. the restaurant pretty tight. there is not good view - it is locates on the 1st floor of Hotel Sofitel. The menu was pretty small, not too big selection of the food. I tried Lobster bisque soup and surf and turf. Soup was good, and lobster was ok. nothing really surprising. Their deserts were great. overall ok experience.
My husband, daughter, and I have enjoyed two Christmas dinners here. The food and service have been excellent. We love the unique and unusual decorations in the lobby which are extremely festive and make a good background for family photos.
My husband and I have also celebrated Valentine's Day at Cafe Des Architectes. We enjoy the fine dining in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
We will continue to come here for special occasions.
Christmas dinner at Cafe Des Architects did not disappoint. Fantastic food, wine and service! Will most definitely become a holiday tradition for our family. Expected a great experience and we most certainly received one. Happy to relax and enjoy family in a most delightful setting.
Attended a $65 pre-"fe" for Christmas Eve dinner with a group a friends and was disappointed to say the least. By spending almost $1000 we expected more. Some examples include; small entree portions; packed seating (extra banquet tables and chairs brought in to stuff the room for all the revs they accepted), and stressed servers who you could plainly see had too much to handle. I wish they had not been greedy and only accepted reservations for what the room normally holds. I've seen it on a regular night and it looks very cozy. This night it was loud, over lit and crowded. Not what I was expecting for dinner on a special night
We enjoyed the food and were very spoiled with treats on our anniversary. However, the service was not attentive (water/wine). The seating was along a long bench, so that you were within close proximity to neighboring couples, almost like sitting at the same table. Not my idea of a romantic or intimate dinner with my beloved.
The sous chef and pastry chef went beyond their duty accommodating vegan thanksgiving brunch which was superb! I received a call from each prior to the date, I've never experienced such great customer service. They also gave us a treat to take home. I was amazed.
This place was AWESOME! A friend recommended it, went to celebrate an anniversary. Did the 7 course meal; chef came out and asked if he could make TWO separate tasting courses (one for each, so we weren't eating the same thing). OF COURSE! Chef did come out 2 more times to ask how the meal was going. He really picked up our tastes! Our waiter, Romi ("the singing waiter") was very attentive and sang La Vie En Rose for us. The acknowledged our celebration with champagne and a special dessert. The staff was great, food was DELICIOUS! What a find!
6 of us dined here prior to going to the Chicago Theatre to see a show. The service from start to finish was extremely poor. Unable to flag someone down, we had to stand up and find our waiter or the host on numerous occasions so we could get a drink or food order in. The restaurant was only moderately busy for a Friday evening so I don't know why our waiter appeared to be so overwhelmed. The food was good with decent drinks and wine options. The space is very attractive as well. Unfortunately, the service provided ruined the experience.
Know of the Hotel Sofitel from previous stay, but had no chance to dine there. Took my wife on recent trip to Chicago. Truly an exceptional find. Only a couple of blocks off upper end of Michigan mile, easy to reach. Menu, wine list and service was truly wonderful. Mussels and fois gras were excellent. Duck breast likely best I have ever tasted. Black raspberry souffle melted in one's mouth. If ever there, this place is a must!!!!
We were very impressed with this restaurant. My wife and I celebrated our 42 anneversary with dinner here. We had the seasonal degustation and the Chef (David) just blew us away with his offerings. There were 7 plus offerings and to our surprise: my wife and I were treated to 7 different offerings each. The tastings were outstanding: we shared many as we were each getting different selections. The waiter service was impeccable. The ambiance was very nice (we didn't find it overly bright as one other reviewer noted). We will be back.....and back. Just wish we could take Chef David home with us.
Outstanding service. Greeted with champagne for our anniversary and complimentary dessert - a very thoughtful touch. Food was very good, paced well. Lobster was disappointingly small portion of the actual lobster. I think they should rename the dish. Lighting was too bright, tables too big to be an intimate setting for a romantic date. I felt like I was miles away from across the table. Overall a very nice dinner but could be improved simply by making the ambiance more intimate.
My boyfriend and I went to dinner at Cafe Des Architectes for his birthday and each chose the CdA signature tasting menu and wine pairing. The server, Romi, was excellent! He was extremely pleasant and charming and offered to have the chef prepare two different plates for each course so that we could try more options. Each course of the seven total course was delicious. We were able to try 14 different plates because of Romi's offer and each was exquisite! My boyfriend and I had a hard time choosing our favorites because they we're all that great. The wine pairing was also delicious and complimented each course, so much so that i asked to snap a picture of a few wine bottles so that i could purchase them in the future. The entire meal was very pricey- $90 for each tasting menu and $55 for the wine pairing each, but for a special occasion, completely worth it. They also have a standard menu for lunch, dinner, and brunch and offered a pre fixe menu with appetizer, entree and dessert for only $39. We will definitely be back!
We waited ten minutes at the maitre d's station. Waiter after waiter walked by, but would not even give us eye contact. When the maitre d finally arrived, we were seated swiftly. For the next 35 minutes, service repeatedly ignored us; not even our drink order was take. Our waiter kept telling us he'd be right back, and then he attended to his other tables. Ultimately, we left. I'm not sure why we were singled out. We were dressed as well, if not better, than the rest of the patrons. I assume it's because we had two children. It's funny, there was a patron with a dog who was getting better service. Dogs appear to be more welcome than children.
Our group enjoyed breakfast the day we dined. It was a true French experience. The pastries are wonderful, especially paired with a French press of coffee. I am not a fan of black coffee, however the French press takes black coffee to a new level. The entire menu is well worth ordering. It feels as if you are dining along the Champs in Paris. This is a great location to people watch if you are seated on the patio. I highly recommend breakfast or lunch when you dine.
We dined here with friends to celebrate a birthday. The food was very nicely prepared and the menu has a number of excellent choices. I chose the seasonal fixed menu which included fresh trout and it was very good. All the courses are nicely prepared with fresh ingredients in the French Nouvelle cuisine style (a modern style of cooking that avoids rich, heavy foods and emphasizes the freshness of the ingredients and the presentation of the dishes.) The wine list had many notable selections and since everyone in my part had fish, we opted for a nice Pouilly-Fuissé (at about $90 USD per bottle.) Fresh and crisp it complimented our meals nicely. The service was somewhat lacking, as in the wait staff never seemed to be able to get the right plates to the seat location, but they were pleasant and helpful. Sadly the restaurant was very quiet which is unusual in the heart of Chicago and only a few tables were used throughout the evening (Thursday night at 7:30 PM). We dined out doors on a lovely Chicago summer evening.
Went to celebrate a special occasion. We had the Chef's Degustation menu with wine pairings. The food was excellent as were the pairings. Every course was wonderful French food and preparation, using seasonal foods. Could not say enough good things about it. The service was impeccable. It was not that crowded when we went which at first gave us pause, but as mentioned the food and service were wonderful and it made it a nice, quiet and relaxing celebration without noise and crowds.
The service was superb, attentive, informative and friendly. The food was beyond fabulous. Delicate yet assertive flavors that blended together to create a perfect harmony of indulgence. Creative and beautiful plating. Well timed, never rushed. I cannot say enough about how amazing the flavors of EVERY dish were. The wines paired with each course with such finesse that each sip accentuated each bite. A perfect experience.
