Fixed price meal for valentines dinner was not noted on open table reservation. Would have liked a forewarning. Food was expertly prepared and above expectations with the bread being the one exception. It tasted “day old” and served with French butter no less.
We had the restaurant week menu. The food was ok, not particularly good, but certainly not bad either. The service was spotty. Our main server was friendly, but seemed confused and under informed about the menu and drink lists. We ordered the cheese supplement and never received it. The server apologized for forgetting and we weren’t charged for the cheese. The mignardises and chocolates didn’t arrive at the end, so I asked about them and he said that due to restaurant week they ran out. Odd given that the restaurant was nearly empty.
There was a baptism party going on upstairs in the hotel event space. The music was loud and unpleasant throughout the entire meal... obviously the restaurant has no control over that, but it was far from optimal.
Cafe des Archetectes is a small restaurant within the Sofitel Hotel. It is not popular, and reservations are probably not necessary even for a saturday night. They seemed a little disorganized, but were pleasant and reasonably attentive. The menu is not large. The night we were there, the restaurant had run out of potatoes. Considering the price, $180 for 3 people, I think there are much better choices.
Hadn't been to Cafe D A for an age, and sorry that we haven't. The setting has not lost its lustre -- chic red, silver and warm wood tones. It is super conversation friendly, even though there were several large parties the night we at here. Food is good, not great. Service is good; not great. It's on the pricier side of Chicago offerings, but that should not be a reason not to go.
We went for the pre fixe dinner on New Year’s Eve. I realize that the restaurant was working under unusual circumstances since it was very full for this special occasion. However, the service was appalling. We waited 15 minutes beyond our reservation time to be seated then waited another 10 before we even ordered drinks. On top of that, it took at least 7 more minutes for our pre-meal drinks (3 champagnes and a dirty martini) to arrive - the martini came without the requested olive and the olive had to be delivered on a plate several minutes later. During the dinner which had only 2 choices per course, several identical course offerings were served on entirely different dishes and not plated in the same way at all. When the forks were delivered to the table for the meat course, one of our diners was given a dessert fork for her filet. Our server was NOT attentive and seemed to have far too many tables for a fine dining experience - the maitre d’ was also trying to check coats and call for next reservations in the lobby. Since the temp was in negative digits there were lots of coats, scarves, gloves etc. to be handled and the combination did NOT work at all. In conclusion, I went expecting the hefty price tag (over $600 for 4 diners) but I also expected that price to bring exceptional attention from our server (he got over $100 in tips from our table after all) and at least one totally unforgettable dish. I got neither.
Christmas Dinner was spectacular. I frequently dine here. It has become my favorite restaurant in the city. Used to live in the neighborhood and came for breakfast at least once a week and sat outside. The quality of the food for breakfast, lunch, dinner gets better each year. I also enjoy the express lunch. Looking forward to returning soon.
Very pretty, small hotel lobby restaurant. Very good service. We, however, went with a LivingSocial voucher. menu was quite limited. Two entrees to choose from. Not anything special with the first course either unless you like beets!!! It is very nice but I suggest going and ordering off the regular menu. I would bet the options are better. Nice place!!!
I’ve been going to CDA for years, even for holidays. This year wasn’t so good. The food was pretty bad, the ambience was horrible. I think they overbooked to make money and didn’t have the staffing to keep up. Barely saw my server. When they brought my entree, my amuse and salad plates hadn’t been cleared.
Very disappointing experience overall. We were a 6 ppl reso on Thanksgiving night. They sat us at a round (banquet style) table near the server station/kitchen/bar. This table was obviously only put there to accommodate more guests that evening. It was not part of the main dining room. Also it was set for 8 ppl with 8 chairs. They couldn’t even set it up properly before seating us. We had to ask staff members several times to take away the extra settings. They seemed short staffed and unprepared. Our server tried his best I suppose but seemed stretched very thin and the lack of service reflected that. He would take a drink order and run away without seeing if anyone else needed anything at the table which usually means he was overwhelmed. We ordered a bottle of champagne and later a bottle of white wine and both times the wine was initially poured but we had to refill our own glasses passing the bottle around to one another. This place markets itself as an upscale French restaurant and they can’t even manage proper service. My husband asked for a Sauternes with his foie Gras and the server had no idea what Sauternes was and said he would grab a wine list. He returned with a wine list as we were finishing that first course. The food overall was fine but certainly not worth the price. It’s like this restaurant is only in business because most of its patrons are tourists who will only dine there once. Another service standard that was ignored is when a patron leaves the table a staff member usually re-folds their napkin for them. Not here! My sister and her date got special vegan appetizers and entrées prepared for them which is very accommodating and appreciated. However the entrée they received looked terrible and they said it was bland and tasteless. They served us a Calvados in a champagne flute. Clueless. I actually apologized several times to my family for bringing them here for Thanksgiving. It was an embarrassment and a complete rip off.
Nice resto in the Sofitel hotel. Went there to try out the Travelzoo with wine pairing special. Great service and hostess. Problem is that the food selection was BINARY pick A or B. For $100 I did not really get my moneys worth. Would go back but just pay on my own vs. deal. They also got rid of the fresh bread person and give us a bread bowl, the bread was on the older and harder crustier side :-( I did try the same deal last year and it was nice, unfortunately, they fiddled with the deal and made it worse :-( Too bad...
Consistently very good French cooking. Far exceeds comfort food but is not in the rarified category.
Bacon pizza was a great start.
Trout was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a terrific sauce
Half pheasant was equally perfectly cooked and with a similar superb sauce
Souffle was a trifle heavy and the sauce was very good but could have used a little more kirsch.
It is an amazing place to celebrate special occasion or just have a nice lunch or dinner. Any item from the menu is very tasty and beautifully presented. Service is very attentive and professional, especially from Romi. He is the best. Meets us always as old friends. Highly recommend this restaurant!!!
Elegant nouvelle French cuisine in an attractive setting in a light filled room, with the option of outdoor dining. Food was delicious and most attractively plated, and our waiter brought a lovely small dessert selection to end the meal. Conversation friendly and convenient to Michigan Avenue. Strongly recommended
This restaurant is a real gem and is perhaps one of the best kept secrets in Chicago.
The efforts made by the Chef in both excellence and presentations of the food are really impressive.
The service provided by Raumi was truly exceptional. He is a strong reason for us to come back.
No cafe has ever been better "architected" than Cafe Des Architectes.
Romi the waiter made our visit exceptional. His service was outstanding and his recommendations were perfect. The crab cake and heirloom tomato appetizers were utterly delicicious, Romi's wine suggestion was great and his entree choices of chicken and fish were delicious. A birthday creme brûlée dessert with passion fruit and homemade bon bons was delectable
This restaurant is one of the best in Chicago and is never busy; I don't understand why unless it's just because it's in a hotel. I've had a house in France for years, and the food is authentic French. The ingredients are superb and the food is interesting, unlike the steakhouse nearby, which was crowded and probably more expensive.
Was very disappointed by the service ( it takes them forever to get any dish ordered) overall. What was frustrating was I had to ask for water a few times when the servers weren't attentive enough to refill the water when almost done. Poor quality food/taste too. With so many better quality restaurants around no wonder this place didn't attract much crowd on a beautiful Friday evening!
Decided on late dinner at CDA. The place is very quiet. The menu is a bit limited but I think they do a great job with what they do serve. Started with the oysters which were buttery and tasty. I prefer West coast oysters. We did have to ask for tabasco since it we like the spice. The Assiette camagnarde was a fairly large serving, probably best for 4 people. We got more bread to eat all the pate and terrine. Excellent dish. They have a great selection of cheese but we did not partake.
I had chicken breast which was excellent. Perfectly done. The whipped potatoes were great.
My wife had the branzino that was also excellent. There are a lot of olives on this dish that was not listed on the menu but it was great.
The best was the chocolate layered cake. It is the best. Would go there just for that if needed.
Will be back.
Have dined here every year on our anniversary after getting married at the Sofitel. While food was still excellent, was disappointed to see how they've brought menu down market, made it more casual (chicken wings, burger). No longer really of caliber for celebrating special occasion as it was in past, which is too bad because Chef Biggers has been doing great work there over the years.
If you have a food allergy, this otherwise delicious restaurant should be avoided.
The wait staff obviously has not been trained to understand the seriousness of celiac disease and how important it is for diners with this disease to AVOID GLUTEN. Our guest became seriously ill shortly after dinner. Our waiter had erroneously assured her that her choice of entrees would be gluten free. We so regret taking her to this restaurant.
This is a hotel restaurant. We came here under the impression it was a free standing, highly rated French restaurant. The truth of that didn't stop the restaurant from charging very high prices for mediocre food. The bread was hard, there was barely anyone there on a Saturday night, and the cocktails were underwhelming at best. Unless you're looking for a quick meal at the bar, while staying at the hotel, give this place a skip
We came to CDA for my fiance's b.day and let's just say that she came out from this experience very inpressed. Food was impeccable and the option for prix fixe was available. Drinks were delicious and one of the wait staff came to serenade in french song. Awesome experience.
Restaurant was empty yet we were placed in a 2 seat at the end where even the srver had to duck out of the way of the oversized overhead pendant light. My croque monsieur was luke warm, cheese not properly melted; side salad had wilting radishes. The pimento cheese spread and bread starter was yummy.
