Cafe Claude Ratings and Reviews
I came to Cafe Claude to specifically see the singer performing that night. Unfortunately I could not hear her very well since she was in the corner and not in the middle of the restaurant--I would recommend having the singers in a more open area rather than the corner. Food was still good, and the service was terrific.
Just about perfect in every way. Our server was excellent. Delicious duck confit. Maybe the best I've ever had and great cocktails too. We're already planning a return trip in a couple of weeks. Have walked past this place for years and had drinks but had never stayed for dinner. Great all around.
Cafe Claude was absolutely amazing. My Girlfriend and I dined there for our Anniversary. They had a nice table next to the window set up for us. They greeted us kindly as soon as we walked in and there was no wait for our reservation even though we were slightly early.
The server promptly greeted us and got us started with water and introduced us to the specials. Sevice was very attentive but never overbearing. He was also great at making recommendations to help guide our choices.
The food was out of this world! Started with the small steak tartar (which was plenty for the two of us) and he suggested fries to accompany it, excellent! They never rushed us through the first course and had our entrees perfectly timed to follow. We had the crispy duck and the chicken, both out of this world!! The ducks sink was so crispy while still being moist and falling off the bone in the center.
We finished with a soufflé style chocolate cake that was served with sweet creme to pour over. It was so rich and gooey in the center, absolutely worth it!
They even sent out 2 glasses of sparkling wine on the house at the end of our meal for our anniversary. It was a very nice surprise!
All in all a great experience. We will definitely be back!
Despite having a reservation, we were sat at a bar with less than 12 inches of eating space, no leg room, directly in front of the taps. Our stools had no back, and the tiny, main thoroughfare was behind us, including the hostess station. The food was pricy, and my husband’s steak was over cooked. My salt cod was fishy and salty, and not in a good way. The bartender and host were kind, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Our memory of a previous visit was not reflected in this one...generally disappointing food but good service.
French onion soup was made beforehand and re-heated with soggy crouton and weak flavour. Ordered steak frites medium rare and arrived raw...sent back for additional grilling. Cut of meat was tough and stringy. Duck confit was good.
Would not return in future.
The person who managed seating chart was not very nice. After we requested to change our table, he took a long time and very unpleasantly did it.
However, food was excellent!! I didn't expect anything based on their pictures, but really we liked their food very much!!
Excellent food done in the French Style. Service was excellent, and the waiter recommended a very good Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon (By the glass). The Coq au Vin was classic. The Tart Tatin was made with authentic Puff Pastry (Feullitage Classique) and had excellent texture and flavor. We will return.
Cafe Claude is the next best thing to being in Paris. The traditional French bistro menu is perfectly executed, and the outside dining on the alley gives an added touch of authenticity. My steak and frites were delicious, and my friends enjoyed the Cog au Vin and the swordfish. We will make a point of returning the next time we are in San Francisco.
I confess to a bias--I like this restaurant a lot. The food is interesting, the wine list sufficiently broad and the staff both friendly and professional. My only "ding" on it is the pricing of the wine. I flinch when I see the posted prices on the wine list. $15 or $16 a glass for a Chablis or Sancerre seems too steep to me.
Every visit to Café Claude rewards the diner with a very French style experience.
Quiche Lorraine here used to be amazing and I thought it was the best, but what I got this time was completely different from what I had 6 months ago. I was very disappointed by it.
Service is always great, nice atmosphere for a date or friend get together.
Wines are good too.
We celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary at Cafe Claude last night and had a wonderful time. The staff were all very friendly and perfectly attentive without being in our faces. The foie gras and steak tartar were heavenly. The sparkle in the sky cocktail is delightful. French onion soup paled in comparison...there was just some rich element missing. We were full by the time our entrees arrived (coq au vin--meh, and the sliced meat platter with pickled veggies, better). Desserts were spectacular as was the 30-year and 20-year port. Thanks for a lovely evening!
A Gem in downtown San Francisco tucked away in a quaint alley. We discovered Cafe Claude many years ago when we were living in the Bay Area. It is still one of our favorites, the food and service are exceptional . The mussels are the best in the area , the swordfish and chicken melt in your mouth. Excellent wines and the waiters have great recommendations. Has a nice ambience and European feel. Love Cafe Claude!
I got it mixed up with Claudine...didn't like the surrounding area...was looking for outdoor seating but once I got there, I didn't want to sit in that ally so moved inside. Atmosphere was ok service was good, food was good and reasonable, wine was good too...but nothing to rave about.
It was a date night dinner for two and we chose to sit outdoors. The temperature was very nice and they have heaters for outdoor seating. We wanted to try everything but we ended up choosing the mussels and steak tartare for appetizers to share (they offer a small / large portion) so we chose the small for both. We also ordered the french onion soup which is so damn good. For the main entrees, we ordered the Coq a Vin and the Duck dish. I highly recommend the duck! And we had to finish off with dessert! The apple tartine and chocolate cake! All so very yummy!
I've been to Cafe Claude several times for lunch because I find the ambience charming, but this was my first dinner experience. The service was attentive and they really bent over backwards to compensate for a "backed-up" kitchen by offering extra dishes and drinks to keep us happy. We were a party of four. Two of our four main dishes--the roast chicken and the duck confit--were poorly prepared, dry and stringy, which could've been the result of whatever was going on in the kitchen, but those two dishes should never have found their way to the table. The other two dishes––trout almandine and steak frites--were well-prepared and tasty. I give Cafe Claude high marks for their wait staff and front-of-house staff, but the food didn't impress.
Cafe Claude is a gem hidden in San Francisco's Financial District. Great place for a drink, some jazz and great food. I had the duck which was out of this world, and the martini was a nice compliment. Great atmosphere, will definitely return!!
Only suggestion is maybe a better wine pour, the person who joined me called it a "Shot" of wine.
