Has gone downhill. on evening of 1/18/20 service non existent. Food mediocre. Not going back. All I heard from the waitress was how busy the kitchen was but we practically had to beg for water.
No wonder your not busy on a Saturday night.
Very disappointing. We are big fans of Care Claud, usually enjoying lunches which have always been positive experiences. The service was ridiculously slow and nearly non existent. Our business guest’s Cog Au Vin was terribly over cooked. He was polite leaving more than half the dish pushed to the edges of the plate. Our waiter was frazzled and a poor communicator. Your establishment seemed to be horribly understaffed on January 15 at 7:00pm on the date that a huge JP Morgan conference was in town.
We waited 20 minutes after asking twice to receive our check.
All in all a disastrous meal and evening about which you should be aware,
1 Russian Hill Place
San Francisco, Ca. 94133
We just quick bowls of soup and french bread but they were delicious. Atmospheric place on the Claude alley, we sat outdoors with heaters overhead.
Sitting outside was miserable. It’s a great restaurant if you can sit inside. 55 degree day in SF, and unless you’re directly in the path of the heater it’s just unpleasantly cold. Service was fair but overall not worth a $70 lunch. Disappointed as I generally love this place
Reservation request for the bar section was not honored. It happens. Would be nice to be given a heads up and decide to adjust our plans however... also had a misunderstanding with the waiter on which wine we ordered which put me back 20$ dollars. Paid 53$ for wine when we really wanted two glasses. I’d been there before and loved it. Didn’t work out so well this time.
Warm colors, an intimate setting and bar, and authentic French decor welcomed us. The Smith Dobson Trio was fabulous - the music was what drew us there that evening. However, the food was also outstanding and authentic - we'll definitely be back as soon as possible!
It was a very nice dinner, our waitress was excellent!!
Maybe it was an off night and the three of us ordered the same dinner (cog a vin) but it was marginal.
Great service, very good food and enjoyed the jazz band.
Great service! Live music made the atmosphere!
We wanted to combine a dining experience with live jazz on a Friday night. The music was not really jazz, totally uninspiring. The food was OK, not really inspiring either.
Cafe Claude was smaller - they have expanded since the last time I was here (many years). Prefer cafe Claude from time before.
Our meal was delicious. I would highly recommend to others.
This cafe is a hidden gem, tucked away in a small lane in downtown SF. The place is attractive & the service was excellent. I highly recommend the Brie appetizer to share- my husband loved the trout & I enjoyed the scallops. Highlight was creme brûlée for dessert! If you enjoy jazz, ask for a booth where you can see the small stage. The music enhanced the dining experience & was not too loud. We will definitely go again.
It's noise level is on the high side, but we were there on a Sat. 2days after Christmas so l don't think it's that much of a draw back. The rest of the experience was delightful.
Amazing flavors! Been coming here for 25 years and it’s only gotten better!
Great evening all away around. Pate was delicious. Special of scallops was amazing. Excellent cocktail (Renaissance!). Cafe Claude is a favorite.
It was a very intimate space—hard to find, down a nondescript alley off Sutter Street. But the food and drinks were superb. Very much like being in Paris. Great friendly service. And there was live jazz in the bar, which I took advantage of after dinner.
Still a lovely place to eat amazing food and enjoy nice French wines!
Fine bistro in a secluded small street. The food is well prepared but on the smaller portions side. The mussels, which came on a plate, were very small relative to other bistros where mussels are served as a whole lot. The steak tartare was only ok. The fries were very good. The ambiance is generally nice. A bit pricey for what it is.
It feels like u r in Paris while dining here. Food is wonderful as is the service. Highly recommend it
We had a table of 5 on Christmas Eve and the Open Table confirmation did say it was for outdoor seating but I did not realize that it was not an enclosed tented area but instead open to the alley. This was not a pleasant atmosphere as we got police sirens and the loud clatter of bottle recycling bin being emptied. The hostess saved the day moving us inside to a wonderful, warm ambiance and our server outdoors continued to take care of us indoors. The food, beverage, service & ambiance (indoors) were lovely. I would suggest to the restaurant to be even more clear about outdoor seating, possibly improve the outdoor ambiance or have lower prices outside. We would pay more for inside. I'm just saying it was a totally different level of experience.
It was Christmas Eve in San Francisco and I wanted a restaurant that was upscale but not crazy expensive, easy to get to and not just a cheap place. We found Cafe Claude after reading about 40 reviews of other places and it felt right immediately. At first, it seemed we couldn't get a table before 10PM, but by calling and looking further they were able to get us in at 8:00 (originally with Bar seating but with a table when we got there). The food was delicious (especially the Escargot and the Duck), the service attentive, and overall a great value for a memorable evening. And it is well located near both Union Square and the Financial District!
Everything was great. From the hostess, waitress and the food.
The service and the care that was given was lovely. It's been a long time since a server offered to take my coat. We also enjoyed the food, which was declicious. One of the things we liked best was the ambiance of the place itself. It was fun and cozy to have dinner in a booth on Christmas Eve. We will be back!
We had reservations for 5 pm and we were asked to vacate our table and head to the bar slightly before 7 pm due to other reservations, but as we walked out there were open tables. This was first time I had this happen since relocating to SF.
Our dining experience was marred by the poor service. We waited a long time to be seated despite being on time for our reservation. They sat us about an inch apart from the next table. There was no way for me to get out of my corner without having the person next to me get out of her seat. Luckily our neighbors were very nice out of towners. Our waitress had to be reminded several times about the wine and the check. We literally waited 25 minutes to get our check after requesting for it! That’s a record. Food was very good. Dessert was excellent. Hopefully it was just an off night with the service as we would like to dine there again.
Took our kids for their anniversary, food was delicious as usual. Only complaint is salads were brought out at the same time as our entrees, we could hardly fit everything on the table, and once the dinner was served, service went downhill.... they hardly checked on us and we had to track someone down to get some water, and again for the check.
Cafe Claude has been our “Christmas lunch in San Francisco “ place for many years so we’ve seen many ups and downs. This time the food was Parisian-ly good but the service hit a new low — “bro” pretty much left us to fend for ourselves. Had to ask him for virtually everything. Not good at those prices. Loved the remodel — beautiful bar.
As always wonderful food, drinks and service! One of my mother and my favorite restaurants in San Francisco!
Onion soup was flavorful, cheesy and warm/hot on a cold evening dinner. Trout almandine over a bed of cauliflower/capers was mouthwatering and delicious. Salad nicoise was large with lots of fish. Chardonnay and pinot noir by the glass complemented the dishes. The servers were always friendly and attentive - very nice to be well received. The live jazz music was perfect in transporting you to a Paris bistro/club, but never intrusive to our table conversation. This meal/experience was on a Sunday evening, so there was not a huge crowd and therefore the atmosphere was relaxing, un-rushed and most enjoyable.
Excellent food, even better service. Classic french cuisine, and live music.
The food was good, there was a language barrier both with the server and the busser so our drink and food and dessert order were all wrong. Basic language cues were not understood. It didn’t bother me too much but what was a drag was when the staging of the the meal was also not really great. Some people didn’t order appetizers and some people did and everything really should have been served at one time but the waitress did not think it through so there were awkward pauses in the meal.
Bistro for the locals. Traditional French. Even the simple salads are tasty.
Birthday lunch before theatre. Great service augmented the tasty food.
The food and service was excellent and the restaurant has a wonderful ambiance but the jazz ensamble playing was so loud we could hardly hear the waitstaff or ourselves speak. This seems to be a persistent problem in many restaurants. The bands seem to think most people have come to hear them.... we come for the food and do not want to be drowned out with music - no matter how good.
Fantastic place for dinner. Great food and service plus nice jazz in the background.
Cafe Claude is on a little lane - immediately charming-indoor/ outdoor seating- tres French. Escargot - yum. Trout almondine- just as yummy - pate- lovely and of course dessert. Always a SanFrancisco stop for us.
The duck confit and onion soup were both superb. Salad was very good as well, almost too large to finish.
WIll definitely be back.
Love this place. Perfect for all ocassions. I prefer to sit in the back for nice quiet conversations. Writing this review makes me want to go tonight. .
