Quiet with good service.
The food was fantastic! I ordered Ala Carte and the two others I was with ordered the Chefs menu. Everything was extremely flavorful and fresh tasting. My only complaint is the staff was so focused on chatting it up with their ,I’m assuming “regulars” they fell short on providing us newcomers a great service experience. After a few courses we sat and sat and sat waiting for someone to come clear our plates ,refill our water or just check on us, We had to summons them over almost each time we needed anything. Great food, marginal service.
We enjoyed the special Positano menu with wine suggested by our server.
It wasn’t a Michelin star grade service. I’ve dined here a few times before and I knew they serve good, reliable food. I went for
Fabulous! Great staff and deelish!
I feel I should make it clear to any reader that my preference is always to enthuse, celebrate and share enjoyable experiences. Ordinarily, rightly or wrongly, I will not write overly critical reviews.
Every now and then, however, I feel compelled to communicate an outrage.
I have eaten at Cafe Boulud and various Boulud restaurants (including Danielle) over the last 15 years or more. So much so that at one stage I would have told you that he was one of my preferred chefs. Of course the world has moved on. Cafe Boulud was at first a delight and then slipped into quiet arrogance for a few years. I stayed away for a while then started to visit Cafe Boulud at the Surrey Hotel. The food and service seemed to have been rejuvenated (possibly following Danielle’s loss of its 3rd Michelin star).
What I experienced this evening was really quite saddening. The food menu was ok but the wine list offered only mediocre quality across the board until reached the stratospheric level. Curating a wine list takes a lot of skill and business savvy. This list was just inflated and often mis-directed.
What really disappointed however was the quality of some of the food and the seeming inability of management to respond to the failings. The all too frequent response is to offer to take it off the bill rather to listen to the complaint. Poorly seasoned, floury/chalky sauces and ill-seasoned dishes were sadly not acknowledged other than the discount on the bill.
Finally the inattentiveness of the more senior front of house staff towards the end of the evening was unforgivable. Besides having to wait to get their attention while they chatted to each other they didn’t seem concerned that other diners were snogging away in full view. I hate to sound like the old prude that I probably am but some level of decorum at this level of restaurant should be maintained.
So there you have it - a sad tale of a once proud restaurant. My tip- don’t waste your money.
Mixed. Positive: chef’s gift, gazpacho, chocolate dessert. Negative: refusal to seat until all were present, cold rolls, no madeleines.
Everything was perfect
I missed the madeleines at the end of the meal...
Loved it. One of my favorite restaurants once again showed me why. A wonderful restaurant week lunch. Went with 5 friends who are now talking about when we should return.
a restaurant where it’s not noisy and tables not too close together is so rare these days.
Breakfast originale , très belle formule et c'était un plaisir
Amazing food, beautiful presentation , excellent service and nice quite place. I was in NY with my sisters for my birthday celebration and we went to Cafe Boloud because I wanted a French restaurant. I was very happy with everything. They even put candle on our dessert for my birthday. I will definitely go back there when I visit NY again.
It is one of my great experience.
The dessert tasted really good.
The main fish and the salad was normal.
The environment and service was good
Been a fan of db for many years and have always chose to celebrate special occasions enjoying French cuisine with friends and family and it never disappoints.
Quantity over quality. One of the worst Michelin star restaurants I went to in NY. Went there thinking they had their restaurant week menu but they didn't. They had this horrible family style Italian Menu. We made the mistake of ordering that. Probably should have done a la carte. Stuffy old white upper west siders only. Don't make the trip from Brooklyn and spend your hard earned money.
Restaurant week have no special menu
We made reservation and have to wait. The food was salty and very expensive.
Great place where go several time a year.
Always wonderful. The loveliest restaurant in the neighborhood. Never disappointed.
In the time of war there is no substitute for victory. If you live in NYC or you are visiting, you must dine at one of Daniel Boulud restaurants. His dedication, passion and determination to create a successful restaurant are unique. From the Maitre'D desk to the end of our meal, everything was excellent. After my wife and I were sited, menus were handed to us, not places on the table. The captain Darko, explained the choices and described the dishes to the last detail. They were very busy. The knowledge and confidence was translated into a perfect experience. My wife and I have pretty much the same pallet. We both ordered the terrine of chicken liver, (If the word chicken was not written on the menu, you could have said that it was terrine fois gras). Main course we selected, Trout Meuniere, was perfectly cooked. The filet of fish, with a height of quarter of an inch, was moist, and uniformly crispy skin. Haricot Vert, Fingerling Potatoes with julienne of onions, were amazing. Bravo the the Chef! As a dessert, we ordered the Mille Feuille creme d'almond with burratta ice cream which had a subtitle taste of lemon and the Caramel Fondant with glace ou chocolate. They both score Gold Medal, Magna Cum Laude. Congratulation! What a great team. Chapeau Monsieur.
One of the best restaurants in the city. Food never disappoints, always amazing!
Food and service was outstanding. Finally a New York restaurant that I was able to converse with my friends
All staff were friendly, professional and attentive. We availed ourselves of the Restaurant Week lunch menu. The restaurant was fully booked but we were taken to a table on time of our reservation. We were served at a comfortable pace, never rushed, never forgotten. The food, of course, was why we returned to Cafe Boulud, having had an excellent experience several weeks ago with old friends from abroad--all was as expected--high quality, distinctive but subtle flavors, sufficient variety offered so that my wife and I chose different items for each of the three courses. We look forward to returning again.
I have eaten at four other Boulud restaurants, in the US and Canada, and this one has many of the characteristics of the other but does not achieve the same food, ambience, and service as the other. Only minor things result in the opinion, but the do add up.
One of the more outstanding options for restaurant week lunch. An elegant atmosphere with delicious food that is beautifully presented by a top notch staff. Wish I could eat here everyday!!
Reataurant week lunch so value was great. There must have been a contest for the wait staff to see who could sell the most glasses of wine. We were asked by at. Least three servers if we wanted wine. But it was not just an ask, it was “ would you like some wine? Some red or a white.? We have a very nice (name that variety).” We declined, but later my wife decided she did want s red. You should have seen how them waiter brightened when we ordered it.
The food was very good. The chicken liver was mild and tasty. The pork loin was perfectly cooked with the best part of the dish being them corn and polenta. The trout was perhaps the best fish I have ever tasted. The blueberry watermelon desert missed the mark as it had too much tarragon. The overpowered the dish.
Minor point, but I have to mention this - one of the servers came to take our bread plates away. I was still eating my appetizer and he reached in front of me and over the plate I was eating from to retrieve the bread plate.
We will return.
I went for lunch, and asked to sit outside, and they gladly said yes. I ordered the restaurant week lunch menu (liver mousse, trout, and tart) and all three courses were truly excellent. Service was great as everyone was really polite. I accidentally forgot my card there and they called me very quickly and returned me my card. Overall it was an outstanding dining experience!
Overall good, but they served us very old bread, and they did not serve a different one until we finished the bad one. That’s very disappointing for a restaurant of that caliber
I didn't enjoy the Sunday restaurant week menu, the food did not surprise me at all. The desserts are great though. Service is okay but the servers were kind of busy and did not seem to be patient.
I was very disappointed they were not able to sit us outside. Then they proceeded to sit us at a table for two evening though our reservation was for four. Service was disappointing.
Excellent. Food as always innovative and service impeccable. Very highly recommended
We always look forward to our visits to Cafe Boulud; the food is excellent and the service is always so friendly. It is always a highlight of our trips to NYC.
When we go to the city from Long Island we treat ourselves with a meal at the restaurant. It's definitely worth the trip.
I had a lovely dinner at Cafe Boulud sitting outside on a warm NYC evening. The location, the decor and the service were perfect. I thought the menu was a bit spare. There could have been more selections. The food was very good but it could have been better. I think the food at their restaurant in Palm Beach is better. That said, I enjoyed it.
My sea bass was a little dry
I have had it many times
Summer atmosphere not as good
Still a good place !
Excellent food, good portions, fantastic service! Perfect anniversary dinner!
Outstanding service and almost perfect food, from a selection of interestingly curated menus. We had the special, Positano weekend dinner. Only the overly salty pasta con vongole was less than wonderful. A great evening.
Wonderful food and attentive service- very cozy restaurant tucked into upper east side
We had a lovely experience. The food was superb, the service excellent and the ambience perfect. We really look forward to our next visit.
