Cafe Amelie Ratings and Reviews
Just when i thought I couldn’t have my mind blown by another great NOLA restaurant, bc they are all great, Café Amelie proved me wrong. The courtyard is charming and comfortable but most importantly the food is out of this world! This restaurant will be a permanent fixture on my “must do” list the next time i visit.
Very disappointed in the restaurant. My sister is a long-term resident of N.O. and has heard wonderful things about the restaurant. We were expecting amazing. Instead:
Ahi tuna stir fry was like college cafeteria food if they served tuna. Yes tuna was very rare but tasted pre-cooked and the dish was just not tadty
Catfish sandwich was tasty, with good ciabatta roll, but worthy of a good sandwich shop, not $16.
Dinner rolls were cold and tasteless
Amelie mixed salad was huge, and ok. Nothing special.
Ladies’ restroom was dirty and dingy.
Courtyard ambiance was not as lovely as expected from reviews. Mostly because of all the couples waiting to be seated. Most seemed to be waiting past their reservation times. At any rate, ours was for 7 and we got seated after 7:15.
Compared to meals at Paladar in the Marigny and a $9 total for lunch at Moon Wok in the French Quarter over the weekend, Cafe Amelie was not worth the price.
Our favorite dining experience in NOLA. The courtyard is beautifully welcoming. Inside is cozy and charming. We had oven roasted salmon that was perfect and finished with an outstanding fruit crumble. Perfect for a date night or small group gathering. We look forward to returning one day.
Cafe Amelie is a must for lunch to enjoy the ambiance courtyard and architecture! The shrimp and grits suffice for a meal for me and I adore the fabulous 7 layer caramel cake specialty...to die for! My friend loved the muffuletta ...large portion could easily split .
It was just a delightful experience!
I love the ambience of this restaurant. It's a beautiful space, set back in a courtyard. Our waiter was great - food took a long time, and there were periods where we didn't see him for a while, but he explained issues in a way that was understandable, and he did well under challenging circumstances. I've had really great food here a couple of years ago, but on this visit it was just OK. Salmon was overcooked, a fresh mozzarella appetizer did not seem to involve high-quality cheese, and nothing my group had was better than "pretty good." In New Orleans, there's not much room for OK food, so I would recommend it as a place to have drinks, but not a meal.
As one of the famed FQ restaurants e.g. Brennan's, LaTrobe's, Two Sisters, I really expected a lot more from our experience here. For the price point and the storied reputation, it was a disappointment (10/13/2017).
We made a reservation and were seated promptly. From this point on, the service was extremely sub-par: we didn't see water for at least 10 minutes, our order was taken 5 minutes later, our server forgot our drink order, and the dinner rolls arrived...with dinner (which I don't believe to be the expectation). Slowness and error are the dominant sentiments I recall from the evening.
As far as the cuisine went, it was extremely uninspired, average, and, frankly, bland. I opted for the special of the night: a chicken fettuccine pasta. What was funny is that the previous night, we had gotten room service at the Hyatt Regency and my date had ordered pretty much the same thing. On this dish, the ROOM SERVICE VERSION WAS BETTER, cost less, and was served to us in bed (OK, 5 feet from it). Perhaps most boggling of all is that it was downright BLAND in New Orleans. NEW ORLEANS. How is that possible?
My date's salad was fresh and generally well done and made inventive use of apples.
By way of comparison we'd dined at Marchello's a few days earlier and were amazed by the ingredient choices, the clever dishes, the wonderful locally-sourced accents..it was a true inspiration. I nearly wept over their shrimp + grits.
The venue is, of course, unique. It's courtyard is dazzling and hints at the beautiful, tony life possible behind the barrier walls in the Vieux Carré's boundaries. It's truly special....but, again, the cuisine did not match the environment.
It seems that the establishment is riding a reputation it's not earning and / or its beautiful and unique location on Royal Street. We had gone there with the intention of finding a rehearsal dinner venue; Amelie is no longer on the list.
When we first arrived they took us to a table outside that would barely fit 6 and there was 8 of us. I voiced my concern of the close quarters and they said we would be able to fit. I told them no so they put us inside at a nice roomy table and everything was fine after that.
Cafe Amelie is a charming restaurant. The patio is lovely during the day for lunch, or in the evening for dinner. The indoor dining room is also cozy, warm and romantic. Staff is top notch! Our daughter was married there in 2012,and it was the most wonderful venue for a wedding that I have ever experienced! Danny Akers, the owner, made the entire evening superb! Don't miss this terrific dining experience while visiting New Orleans! Annie Coleman, October 14, 2017
Perfect spot for a date. Not neccessarily a foodie must do or excellent food. The food is good though. Good enough that the great patio atmosphere doesn't steal it's thunder. Cocktail menu is really good. All in all, an excellent choice for a romantic, special occasion.
We were in town for a convention and made reservations for 4 for dinner but the day of 4 more wanted to tag along and so we called Cafe Amelie and they happily changed our reservation to 8. Well, 2 more decided to come with that night and again, Cafe Amelie accommodated our needs. We enjoyed the brussel sprouts appetizer and everyone enjoyed their dinners. I had the salmon. Very large portion and wonderfully prepared.
We stepped off the sidewalk and into another place and time. It was so lovely and charming outside and in. The server was great at menu suggestions and was so right on. We loved just sitting & looking at where we were. I hope we get to go back again sometime.
In one word "delightful" . I would go back in a heartbeat! A welcoming place to have great food (and perfect portions) "quiet" conversation in and in a cozy ambience. In addition very reasonable for the "quality" of food!
Enjoy all when you go to Cafe Amelie!
