We went to Cafe 44 for Sunday brunch on the last day of Restaurant week . The price fix menu was limited yet fine . The food was average , barely warm and just okay. If this is any indication what the full menu quality will be like I probably won’t be back for a meal. However , the view from the out door space on the balcony is killer and honestly the best to be had in Old Town. Service is friendly and responsive but needed several reminders about simple requests like water , refills , etc. I’m sure with time those will work out . Happy hours will do well up there with that view .
Great food, service and external views.
Food was delicious! It did take a long time to get the food. The waitress and bus boy were very pleasant. I frequent this restaurant and will be returning.
Lovely place, good food, great atmosphere, reasonably priced--I will be back!
Very nice setting with nice view of Potomac. Food good too.
We visited during restaurant week for lunch. The salad and soup were absolutely terrific, as were our desserts. The entree was (by comparison) disappointing. The beef tenderloin was far too chewy and gristle-y, and the accompanying vegetables were less than appetizing. The view was superb, however, and service was attentive—all of which will have us making a return visit to give the place a second chance.
We had several issues with our brunch at Cafe 44. First, we didn't have silverware at our table by the time our food arrived, had to ask twice, and then eventually went inside and stole it off another table. By the time we resorted to that, our food was cold. Second, our eggs were undercooked as the whites were still clear and gelatinous. We flagged down a waiter passingby who quickly brought better cooked eggs, but not without implying that we were being picky. Third, my order came with the wrong side, and the waitress did not bring the right side for at least 45 minutes, which at that point we had finished our meal. My fork had already been bussed away so I asked for another to eat the side, and I never got one by the time I left. Fourth, we asked for more water and coffee, and after 20 minutes of waiting we flagged down a passing by waiter for re-fills. Fifth, it took more than 30 minutes after we finished our meal for our waitress to ask if we were ready for our dessert that we had ordered at the begining of our meal as a part of the prix fixe--at that point we had already been there for 2 hours and were close to being late for our afternoon plans so we asked for it to-go. When we looked in the to-go bag afterwards, there was only one set of silverware for two desserts. And finally, the waitstaff understood how poor of service we were getting, and apologized several times, but never sought to ameliorate it by comping food or drinks. The food was decent, and the view was nice, but the service is why we will never go back to Cafe 44.
I went to Café 44 during Alexandria restaurant week. For Sunday brunch, even though they’re not usually open on Sundays. The view is outstanding, the assistant manager was fantastic, but unfortunately the service was pretty awful. Maybe it was just my server, but I saw other servers talking with their tables, being attentive, checking in, and I saw my server probably twice or maybe three times the whole meal. Well the food was not spectacular it was not bad either. I would recommend this place for the view, but maybe not much else.
Went there for the first time for happy hour. No one was in the restaurant. As we walked to the terrace, an employee was mopping up where someone got sick. A lot of the tables outside had empty glasss thrown on the table and half drunk wine bottles.
Other patrons said a guy got sloppy drunk after the group downed 16 bottles of wine in an hour. We saw the ambulance taking someone on a stretcher when we walked up to the building.
Not enough staff seemed to be present to recover the terrace quickly. There was a big grill out there but no one was grilling. I might try the place again.
We went for brunch. The view was great but the food was alright and the service was very slow for not being busy at all.
We met friends for Saturday brunch. The se rice was excellent as well as the food. Great views of the river. Cool place! Will be back again
Great local restaurant with excellent food and service! Lots of options on the menu and nice views.
The atmosphere is pleasant. The food is tasty. The seating is in a room with one wall of glass facing the Potomac. It gives the restaurant a unique atmosphere.
Lovely views of the Potomac River from Old Town Alexandria! We sat on the patio where there was late afternoon shade and a bbq setup. The server was very pleasant and the food was good. Happy hour pricing was also a nice surprise. It’s located on the 4th floor of a newer office building, but it’s a sweet reprieve from work or a perfect daytime meet-up spot. Go! You won’t be sorry.
Staff was very accommodating. View was phenomenal. Food was ok I chose a very basic meal. The turkey sausage was delicious. And I had egg whites.
Great place for breakfast, lunch and after-work happy hour/dinner. What makes this place spectacular is the great view of the waterfront and the customer service.
First time there for lunch. Have enjoyed happy twice before and breakfast or brunch before. Not quite as nice for lunch, but understandable I guess.
Alexandria’s Birthday celebration. Exceptional service from every staff member! Thank you for an amazing evening, at an impressive location!
Great neighborhood cafe! The ambiance is polished, casual and relaxed, the food is like home made, and the view is THE BEST! Great coffee and drinks make this our favorite cafe for breakfast, lunch or weekend brunch! Highly recommended!
My family and I were there for the Father's day cookout/buffet. The food was great, the live music was amazing, and the view was awesome.
A hidden gem right on the Potomac. Very good food and a reasonable price too. Quiet and not busy at all. Definitely recommend.
The view from the fourth floor restaurant is pretty, the food tasteful and satisfying. The coffee is very good.
What a great little spot! Service was great, food was excellent and the view is unbeatable! The menu is short and sweet. It was perfect for our 7am working breakfast!
Great view of the river! We went there for breakfast and then came back that same day for happy hour, which was also a great time. Would definitely recommend!
Great new local venue with wonderful view over the Potomac - highly recommended.
Delightful spot, with amazing river views. Good service and great food.
not many places open early for breakfast (not brunch) so we ended up here. It was blissfully quiet in part due to reasonable sized tables and spacing in between - though when full/tipsy I bet it's noisy b/c of the hard surfaces.
lovely light/view. Good food. Unhurried, polite service.
Odd location and a bit hard to find - suggest sign in front of building.
Great choice for happy hour and brunch. Most fabuloaus view of the Potomac River! Friendly staff
A little loud for my taste at lunch, but happy to see this place thriving. Food was okay but maybe I picked the wrong thing this time. Def will be back!
Interesting cafe for a drink and meal. Very pleasant service and view was great. We will need to check out the brunch.
We enjoyed the taco Tuesday! Hard to beat a tasty shrimp taco for $3!
Also, curried chicken salad is very good.
I found Cafe 44 by googling Easter Brunch in Washington DC. This popped up. I loved that it was on the Potomac River. The pictures of the river were amazing and the restaurant looked bright and cheery. When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly hostess who warmly welcomed us. They gave us a seat by the window as we requested. The waiter was polite, friendly and attentive but not overly hovering. It’s located on the 4th floor of an office building and was inthey also have an outdoor terrace. They are slowly opening their doors to the public and on weekends as it was initially for weekday business lunches. This was a great find and we will definitely go back to enjoy the terrace. Highly recommend you check this little gem out. 5FA32879-91F6-4BE5-961E-307575BBB91B.HEIC. C5F485C4-E791-4C34-919A-84547EB20773.HEIC C4D3213A-52F0-4809-B15E-AE9A088006C2.HEIC
Unbelievable views of the Potomac River combined with a great staff, reasonably priced meals, & fairly decent food. My wife & I went to Cafe 44 for Easter Brunch & the meal was much improved over the previous visit we had paid there. The word still hasn't gotten out about this gem & its hot location, so I am going to continue to enjoy the easy access while I still can. Can't wait for the warm weather to start enjoying the outdoor seating & unobstructed water view.
We had Easter brunch at Cafe 44 and it was delicious! Service was excellent and wait staff was very attentive and friendly! Was a tad expensive but for a special occasion it’s well worth it! Will be back again whenever we are in Alexandria again!
Less one star because it is not a kid friendly place ( no kid's menu , high chair , changing table in the bathroom) but other than that this place is awesome. Will definitely return ( without kid)
Difficult to access, especially on a Saturday. Server was excellent, responded well to multiple requests. Beautiful view.
Food was a bit disappointing, especially the biscuits.
Will try again on a weekday.
Awesome new restaurant and happy hour setting! Definitely a hidden gem that we are looking forward to going back to! Great service, views, drinks, and decor!
Honestly, Cafe 44 earns 3 stars for their food, but 5 stars for the staff & the incredible location. I discovered their existence during Alexandria's Restaurant Week, hadn't heard of them prior. They are tucked away in an office building in North Old Town off the beaten path astride the river & Mount Vernon Trail, so Cafe 44 is easy to miss. What you don't want to miss is the spectacular, unobstructed view of the Potomac River & Maryland/DC shoreline. The food is so-so, but it is priced accordingly. They have a 4 - 7 PM happy hour which I plan to enjoy once the weather warms up a bit. I'm certain once the word gets out about Cafe 44's location & ambience, it is going to become a regular stop on the Old Town entertainment circuit.
My friend and I went for brunch during restaurant week. Food was good, service was not. It was about 30 minutes until we received our drinks and an hour until we were served our food. We were given our entree first and had to tell them we had not received our appetizer. No apologies were given. Dessert was great. I would try this place for brunch again, maybe it was just really busy due to restaurant week.
