Southern
Nationally recognized chef Jason Santos’ Buttermilk and Bourbon delivers Southern hospitality to guests in the heart of the Back Bay.

Drawing on the South’s trademark charm, the restaurant offers a vibrant, cozy atmosphere with an innovative American menu featuring Southern-influences. Santos, who currently owns and operates Boston’s Abby Lane and Back Bay Harry’s, channels his love of New Orleans and all things Southern to transport guests to the Bayou by way of Buttermilk & Bourbon.

Guests can enjoy pork belly cracklings; BBQ Shrimp; house-made biscuits; oyster chowder; crispy boudin; and house-fried chicken served either Southern-style, Nashville-style, or with sweet and spicy or white BBQ sauce. An oyster bar will also serve up a variety of local oysters as well as peel & eat shrimp. Buttermilk and Bourbon serves up hurricanes-on-tap, large-batch cocktails, and a selection of bourbon-based drinks.

Food was delicious, loved the Fat Tuesday specials! Went at 5:00 and could hear each other talk, but closer to 6:00 the noise level was annoying. I definitely recommend the food, but if you want to have conversation prepare to scream.

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. The food is amazing the staff is so nice and the atmosphere is really cool. Whenever I have friends or family from out of town coming this one of the places I take them

We love the bar! It's cozy and has a great vibe. They have excellent cocktails and appetizers. We probably should have stuck to the biscuits and fried chicken that they are known for. We left the bar to sit in dining the room. I ordered the squash soup, which was delicious and would have been perfect if the sunflower seeds on top had been fresh, but with each bite there was that little rancid oil taste. We also got the broiled oysters. They were outstanding. We ordered the tuna, very good. The last dish was the short ribs with wild mushrooms. It was very salty and very mushroomy, but only a few shreds of actual short rib and no rich flavor. We thought it should be called salty mushroom stew.
So, overall, not impressed.
We may return to sit at the bar for cocktails, an app and maybe try the fried chicken, but with so many excellent restaurants to try, not sure we will make it.

Buttermilk and Bourbon boasts a lovely, intimate ambience with outstanding food to match. Although the meal items are served tapas style, each portion is adequate. The food is delicious, flavorful and satisfying. Loved everything about this place!

One of my favorite brunch spots in Boston! You can't go wrong with the tasty food and New Orleans-style decor. Highly recommend the chicken and waffles and duck confit hash.

This place is good - not great, not awful, just middle of the road. Went for brunch - 10:30 reservation and it was decently busy. Probably could have walked in though. The food is fine - the biscuits are the home run (although the large salt flakes leave an uneven salt flavor). However you can’t order 1 biscuit as a side, you have to order an entire bucket which to me makes no sense. It’s tapas (which I think is a little strange for brunch but that’s their thing so know that going into it) which means food comes out as it’s done. Some plates are huge some are tiny. Besides the biscuits we had the chicken and waffles, the hash, and the beignets. Decent but nothing to write home about. I will say, I saw the shrimp and grits walk past my table a couple of time and definitely had some food envy. The service was fine, though no one seemed enthused to be there from the manager to the hostess to the server to the food runners. The friendliest people were the wonderful staff that clears the tables. Like I said - it’s fine. The service is fine. The food is fine. But if you’re looking for anything better than average I’d suggest going someplace else.

Came here a second time and had just as good of an experience! got the steak tartare toast AGAIN - cannot recommend enough, it is so delicious and flavorful. We got the fried chicken wings, which were juicy. I like my chicken wings really crispy though, which these were not. Tried the cast iron baked brie for the first time - so good! It had some kind of sweet sauce that went really well with the cheese and the bread it came with. Surprisingly, the fried chicken was my least favorite of the dishes, although still delicious. Very calm, quiet place to come for dinner with a friend after work.

Seriously fun lounge experience with likely the greatest fried chicken in the region. We loved the attention to detail and the the cleanly executed creole cuisine. We’ve seen quite enough of the rather blurry and muddled attempts at Creole in the northeast but this is the real deal. Alligator meatballs, the chicken sliders, fluffy and buttery biscuits and the ubiquitous beignets were the highlights. We had great wait staff as well. Will return.

I took my date for dinner at 5 p.m. and it was the perfect place. The restaurant was empty and we had the whole place for ourselves until more customers started arriving. We chose 5 plates to share and we finished with the beignets that were absolutely delicious. This is my second time at Buttermilk and Bourbon and it never disappoints. One of the nicest spots in the Back Bay area.

So I will start by saying it is really hard to get authentic southern food up north. As someone who grew up with southern food it was only okay. To me, It’s more “southern-ish food. “It has many elements of southern food, and food was very creative, however the flavor profile wasn’t always there.” I was excited for the shrimp and grits, but that was honestly the least favorite thing that we had. It was too clumpy and lacked salt and butter. The s’mores bacon and egg flatbread was delicious. The biscuit and gravy, street corn French toast were all average. I probably won’t return, but it was a decent experience. The atmosphere was cute and quaint and our waitress was phenomenal. The prices were also fair.

I had brunch here on Sunday and everything was so good! Our server was so attentive and gave us some really great suggestions on what to order. The biscuits and gravy and the duck confit hash were some of my favorite choices. Absolutely would go back there for brunch or dinner.

If you’re planning on going, definitely make reservations, as it gets busy.

We always do. Even though I live in Huntsville, Al, I have taken my son, an MIT student, to your restaurant for special occasions. We celebrated his birthday. Our Waitress, she was from Russia, was perfect. Thank you for your excellent service and food

Everything was amazing, we got 8 dishes for 4 people and we were so full and satisfied, everything was delicious! My favorites were the Steak Tartare Toast, warm honey glazed biscuits, and buttermilk friend chicken with sweet and spicy sauce.

First time here. Food was very good overall. The only thing that could’ve been done differently is letting us know up front that getting the sauce for the fried chicken on the side was going to cost extra. Not a big deal, but little details like this can and should be avoided.

We had a fantastic experience at Buttermilk and Bourbon on a Saturday night. The service was fantastic, the decor and ambiance of the place was so unique, and the food was phenomenal. It's a great place for locals or for people from out of town. Definitely order the biscuits and the beignets!

B the mood is casual & energetic, and the food, service, & ambiance all very nice. Dishes come as they're ready so it's piping hot and everyone can start eating immediately, generally with the biscuits being first (and have you craving more). The only reason I wouldn't extend this to 5 star is because they are missing a few staples of New Orleans cuisine, or po boys, crawfish, gumbo, jamabalaya. This may be because they are aiming to have a rotating menu but it being our first time there, I am not totally certain.

Regardless, awesome experience and room to grow or rotate the menu.

PS- In addition to the New Orleans inspired cocktail menu, they have Lunch on tap to boot!

First visit. Location is very convenient and ambiance warm. The food was amazing most particularly the street corn, ribs and grilled octopus. Drink menu was unique and also amazing. Can’t wait to go back

Our first visit to Buttermilk and Bourbon was good but not exceptional. The fried chicken was exceptional. The baked brie was short on the nut topping. The restaurant atmosphere is charming but it is small and noisy. We often go with friends who are vegan and we did not notice any options for them if they had been with us.

No one dresses in business casual so don’t sweat it. Food was yummy and the ambiance was cool. Good music. Wish there was more space between tables as the room we were in was very tight. Would visit again. Biscuits were on point!
