Our menu is a mixture of familiar Pittsburgh foods (think pierogies, hamburgers, French fries) and French bistro classics (beef tartare, raclette, mussels), and seasonal classics that come and go throughout the year. We put care into our vegetarian dishes too, including making our own tempeh, falafel, and veggie patties from scratch. Menu items change frequently--usually every day--and reflect many long-standing relationships we have with farms and breweries in our region.
In addition to reservations, we also have a thirty seat bar that is first come, first serve. We don’t know exactly how old the bar is, but it’s at least seventy years old (probably older) and very cozy. Our friendly bartenders are here to make something you like.

Fantastic ambiance and amazing food and drinks! Definitely will be back!
Best burger I've ever had! And the service was amazing.
Everything was wonderful! Service was great, food was delicious. Can’t wait to go back!
great re-start from Pandemic closure, all enjoyed the food tremendously
The atmosphere was amazing. Cocktails are on point the “My Sherry Amour” was fantastic. Best beef tartare I’ve ever had. The fancy burger was incredible. The vinegar pie was a lovely surprise… All in all, YUM!
Food and service wonderful! Only small complaint was the choice of music being played and the volume. Maybe jazz or classical sometime??? I will certainly return!
Great selection of cocktails and wines and thoughtful menu options.
Very poor menu choices. Hamburger were very salty.
First time back in far too long. Still the best burger in town by a wide margin.
Creative, quick and excellent sandwiches and snacks. A number of vegetarian options.
SO good to be back inside. Service was friendly and attentive and prompt without being intrusive. Current menu is very small but we knew that in advance due to Butterjoint's consistency in communicating with potential patrons on email list. Fancy burger was good, as always, and the deliciously fatty pork belly was both of those things.
One of Pittsburgh’s finest restaurants. The food is masterfully prepared, with excellent service. A+
Super awesome service at the bar Saturday night. Great food, drinks, and ambience.
Mussels were wonderful. The Big Salad is back! We love this salad. Burgers and fries were very good. Miss the old style burger but this new one is good. So happy you are open again.
Butterjoint has reinvented itself, better than ever. Fab cocktails and a completely accessible and affordable menu. Same wonderful staff with Tim added as the affable restaurant host. Congratulations, Trevett, Sara, and team for upholding your values and giving Pittsburgh a wonderful new dining destination!
My wife and I went to Butterjoint for a special date night while we were visiting Pittsburgh. The mussels were some of the best we've ever had and the non-alcoholic lemonade/ginger drink was actually the surprise performer of the whole meal. Overall very good.
Food was delicious but the 70's music was too loud. Not sure who picked this music but not appropriate for the dinners who support this restaurant.
I love Butterjoint. Same excellent food and service.
The food is delicious and well priced. I will definitely go back.
Long time patrons going back to Regent Square. Looking forward to more variety in your entrees.
But we're so glad you survived in these difficult times and will continue to support y
And like your serving local sources - especially Clarion Organic.
Butterjoint is still developing its new format post-Covid, and the menu is still small. It’s expected to grow as they can hire staff. The critical point is that the food is delicious, fresh, and served with good cheer.
It's a really nice place to hang out and have a glass of wine with some fancy dinner! The fries with aioli are delicious and the fancy burger too! The service is really nice and I really loved the hip but elegant ambiance. Totally worth it! :)
Everyone should support Butterjoint especially during these difficult times. The prime rib was perfectly cooked and hopefully will be included regularly on the new menu. The lemon-poppy seed sorbet was deliciously refreshing. Great cocktails and wonderful service as usual. We will look forward to many wonderful meals for years to come.
We love the makeover—it’s dynamic, witty and beautiful. People are the same:skilled and charming.
Butterjoint has a really nice vibe. Menu was well rounded but only has one vegetarian option at this time. They are building a new menu. Food was very good, portions not too large. A nice relaxed environment where you didn't have to talk over the music. Can't wait to see how their menu develops over the next few months!
We live a block away and try to come once a month but most times it’s hard, with a larger venue and the ability to make a reservation (could not do before) it made the experience much better. The food is never a disappointment.
Saturday, February 29, 2020, sadly was the last night of service for Legume as it existed. Happily it will reopen soon with an exciting new concept. Much "heart" and "love" was always a part of this fantastic restaurant by owners Trevett and Sarah Hooper. They put thought into every aspect of the business and it always showed.
Everyone should go online and sign up for Sarah's beautifully descriptive newsletters to get a better understanding of their philosophy and vision for the future.
Simply the best restaurant for Farm to Table food. We were visiting the University of Pittsburgh and tried this gem. Being foodies we are very fussy, but this place was amazing!
Final dinner was fabulous with a joyous meal with friends. Food and service both extraordinary as usual. Looking forward to butterjoint experience.
The best and most interesting restaurant in Pittsburgh, the one that led the dining renaissance in town, is no more. Legume served its last meal on Saturday evening, a wonderful and also heartbreaking event. Pittsburgh will probably never see its like again, but fifteen years is a long time in a restaurant's life. The Hoopers are preparing something new for the space, merging Legume into the simply-wonderful Butterjoint. It's very hard to imagine anything replacing Legume, but if it's possible that couple will do it. RIP, Legume, and God bless the new effort.
So sad that Legume will not be Legume anymore. It was our go to place!
Thanks for letting our fifth friend cone to eat with us, you are my pittsburgh favorite, and i will be dropping be to test future offerings. Thanks for all the great meals under the legume rubric. Gloriana, the wheel chair lady
Very good food! We had a gift card so that’s why we decided to go, but we’re happy we did! I had the half a chicken, and my boyfriend had the lamb shank. Both were really great dishes.
Love the vegan and vegetarian options.
The wait to be seated was a little long even with reservations, but the host offered a glass of wine during the wait which was a nice touch.
Wonderful. Great establishment with delicious food. We’ll miss Legume!
The menu on the night we dined was extremely limited, with no salads or green vegetables among the selections. The service seemed incompetent: We had just gotten our appetizers and had just begun enjoying them when the entree arrived--we felt that this was inappropriate. The food itself was "ok."
Wow, it was our first time and it was amazing. Outstanding, awesome service. Excellent food.
I’m sorry to see Legume close - the food has always been excellent. I am looking forward to trying their new venture when it opens.
Excellent food and friendly service as always!
Server seemed allot and not interested in us
There was also a large birthday party with numerous kids that were very noisy
Compared to previous visits something was amiss
