Our menu is a mixture of familiar Pittsburgh foods (think pierogies, hamburgers, French fries) and French bistro classics (beef tartare, raclette, mussels), and seasonal classics that come and go throughout the year. We put care into our vegetarian dishes too, including making our own tempeh, falafel, and veggie patties from scratch. Menu items change frequently--usually every day--and reflect many long-standing relationships we have with farms and breweries in our region.
In addition to reservations, we also have a thirty seat bar that is first come, first serve. We don’t know exactly how old the bar is, but it’s at least seventy years old (probably older) and very cozy. Our friendly bartenders are here to make something you like.
- Common areas deep cleaned daily
- Waitstaff wear masks
- Sick staff prohibited in the workplace
- Staff temperature check required
Great service. Food came out quickly. Everything was prepared very well.
Great food, great service.
Our dinner at Butterjoint was EXCELLENT. I cannot believe it was our first time there. We shared pirogies and veggies, my partner got a burger and fries, and I got the beef tartare and endive salad. All of the food was perfect and service was super efficient and fast. The cocktail I ordered was also delicious, and we ended the meal with amazing dessert- the yellow cake and vinegar pie. Cannot wait to go back and try more dishes! The perfect ending to 2021!
The only issue was the brocolinni was not seasoned. Did not taste good.
Food not up to expectations
Disappointed with the quality of food and ambience. It was NYE and one couldn't get a glass of champagne.
Butterjoint is lovely. On right side you have the bar area with bar seating for maybe a quick hamburger or beers. The left side is the dining side. We were seated on far left. The walls were a bit spartan but looks like they put up new wallpaper and maybe in the middle of redecorating. Nonetheless there was plenty of spacing for eating and social distancing at your table. Service was outstanding!! Very friendly and attentive. The food was solid bistro fare ranging from the most expensive being a steak and fries down to value pricing on a nice pork chop with grits. Lots of choices for inexpensive dining. Great for families early and older folks and couples/groups later. Love this place.
Very warm and inviting, grey fried, great drinks, friendly service
Food was way overpriced and atmosphere was weird and smelly
Beer took 20min. Dinner took 8 min. Appetizer never came. O temp was too high, very hot inside, uncomfortable.
We liked the number of options available - enough without being overwhelmed. We all enjoyed our food, I thought the greens that came with the pork chop were a bit bitter. Waiter was friendly enough. Noise level was good, quiet enough to have a conversation but not so quiet that you felt like everyone could hear you. We’ll be back.
Had a wonderful time celebrating a friend's birthday. We ordered appetizers, entrees, and dessert. The appetizers were delicious. The entrees were okay, and the desserts were hit or miss. The cocktails were interesting and delicious though! Recommend folks give a try when a (fancy) opportunity comes up - is pricey without an occasion!
The cocktails were great! We especially loved the bartender's choice cocktail, and loved that we were at least allowed to choose a preferred type of liquor.
Probably the friendliest staff I’ve experienced in a while. Food was very good.
The place is cozy and welcoming, the staff are lovely. We enjoyed the raclette appetizer, though the appetizer fries were limp and not very hot. The pierogies were great, but the fennel sausage was tough and tasteless. The bistro steak was also tasteless and impossible to chew. We should have sent it back and asked that it be taken off the bill. It was that bad.
This place is so nice and the potential so great that I hate giving it a bad review, but maybe this will help them up their meat game at least.
excellent waitress, friendly staff. Best hamburger for $11 in the city. Expanded menu. Every table taken. A gem in the Oakland residential neighborhood.
Service and food were wonderful!!
We appreciate the attentive service.
I ordered the pork chop only because my guests had already ordered my first and second choices - and it was, hands down, the best pork chop I ever tasted!
Great food, great service, great atmosphere. We will be back and soon.
Our service was fantastic as the waiter was very attentive and friendly. My family really enjoyed the pierogies with various toppings as well as the craft cocktails. We will definitely be back1
We’ve been to the previous iterations (Legume and Butterjoint the bar) many times, and both were favorites for excellence across the board in a casually elegant setting. The new version of Butterjoint mostly lived up to our expectations, with the food as consistently outstanding across starters (especially the sauerkraut balls), entrees (especially loved the pork chop), and dessert (love the vinegar pie). Only rough spot was service, which was pretty scattershot from our main server, even though we were right next to the electronic register where they were regularly entering orders. That said, the service by supporting staff (bussing the table, filling our water, etc) was very attentive, and busy as it was, imagine our primary server was overstretched. Overall, another lovely experience and we’ll definitely look forward to returning again.
fish and chips were great, as was steak tartare and bluefish pate
Fabulous food, superb service!
The food was absolutely amazing and the service was wonderful. Great date night spot.
What a great meal we had last night, roasted half-chickens. They were done perfectly: the breast meat was moist and juicy. It was accompanied by "rice grits," which for all intents and purposes could just be called rice pilaf. Then for dessert, a yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting. My friend had the chocolate torte with whipped cream.
Erik was our server, and he could not have been one bit nicer.
Another A+ meal at Butterjoint. I only wish my cake could have been served room temperature.
The food was good but felt like they were trying to do too much. Honestly the fries were super gross and needed to have the oil changed. The veggie burger was super good and so was the pumpkin soup. Pickled eggplant was eh
Excellent food. Will definitely go back when in the area again. Service was very good which was a pleasant change from other restaurants I've dined at recently.
We loved our evening at Butterjoint. It was our friend’s 80th birthday and everyone treated her kindly and gave us the lovely round table in the corner. Our waiter, Eric, was good. It was a little a little loud for us and some of the appetizers & particular alcohols weren’t available but overall, we had a lovely time, it was a great experience and we’ll be back. Thank you!
A lovely experience for my girlfriend’s birthday
The service here is the real star. Staff seem genuinely happy to be there. What a pleasure to dine in a place where there seems to be such contentment!
This place serves casual food turned up a notch or two. Everything was tasty. I wish there were more vegetarian/vegan choices. It is pretty meat-centric. That said, everything is homemade and very flavorful. It has a cool, retro vibe. We will be back.
First time going for my birthday. Food was good, drinks were good, really enjoyed the ambiance. Would go back for date night.
This was my first trip back to Butterjoint since their re-opening (and the pandemic) - I was not disappointed! We we went with a large party for a birthday celebration. The food is as good as ever, and cocktails were great too. My only complaint is fries no longer coming with the burgers -- that is a pretty big drop in value (a $15 burger with no side is a lot, regardless of how good the burger is). Even so, I'll definitely be back.
We shared the amazing smoked bluefish pate to start, then split a salad. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. My friend loved the walleye and I was very happy with mussels. Hoping we have room for dessert next time!
To noisy and wine options were limited!
Fish was fried. Yuck.
Nice restaurant although very loud. We were seated in the bar area and it was hard to talk. Our waitress was wonderful but less attentive due to the crowds. The food was not outstanding but good. I had the fried fish due to dairy restrictions and it was good but not great. Lots of batter and much less fish.
We had the pierogi's and they were outstanding. Very friendly service.
We had not been to butter joint
for dinner since it was Legume!
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and will look forward to returning soon. The chicken was excellent as well as the fish sandwich and another fish dish!
The mussels were great and we especially love the every day bread that is served with it and with the Raclett!
It was a wonderful restaurant to celebrate my husband‘s birthday!
eh, not the best. the service was great but the food was a bit of a miss.
