Excellent food and wonderful atmosphere! Attentive staff as well.
Enjoyed our evening and will be coming back. Hats off to the chef!!!! Great taste and food presentation. Our little treasure on Main Street in Bismarck ND.
Food was delicious and the service was great. Not much variety on the menu but overall a great experience.
Great place for an intimate dinner with my wife. Food was awesome. So glad my wife found out about this place on North Dakota Today show.
As reservations on Friday night with friends. Came early and had a drink prior to, was good. Bartender was friendly. Small talk between wait staff was heard about previous day, not really appreciated. Staff seemed friendly, until we had our table. The waitress seemed like she wasn’t really there. A couple times after asking if we needed anything and not hearing something instantly she walked away when we actually did want something. When asking how our meal was she waited about 2 seconds. 2 out of 6 of us had the pork. I took one bite and that was enough. It was dry and really hard to swallow. A sauce would have been appreciated. It seemed to be fried in old oil or just too long. The steaks were amazing! I ate more of my husbands steak than my own meal. The walleye cakes were also amazing! Butterhorns were good but could not eat more than one. I was not a fan of the house made drinks, too tart but that’s my personal preference. The best part of my visit was the basement ambience, that booth is stunning!
In summary, for the amount that our meal for two was I am very disappointed in the quality of the pork meal and of the service we received from our waitress. Maybe she was having a hard day but that does not excuse the lack of attentiveness we received. I probably won’t be back for a while.
Wait staff was excellent. Food was delicious. Was noisy initially, but when loud party finished, all was pleasant.
Really delicious appetizers, especially the walleye cake, duck eggroll and olives. Hamburger is one of the best in Bismarck. Great wine list, as well.
On a quest to visit all the fine dining restaurants in Bismarck, and I have to say this one is at the top of the list. Menu apparently changes frequently, for starters we enjoyed the Beet & Pumpernickle, and Pear & Argula salads accompanied by 'Butterhorn' rolls. The salads were fresh and crunchy, the rolls were impossibly light and fluffy.
For mains, we had the Seared Duck Breast and Pork Milanese. The duck was perfectly cooked, just a bit red in the middle. The rice, sausage, mushroom and Juneberry preserve well complemented the meat. The pork dish was new to me. I was expecting sliced loin. This was a lightly breaded, fritter like dish, served with diced vegetables and arugula. Excellent.
Dinner was framed with a very nice Australian Riesling and a Chocolate Torta Caprese for dessert.
Suggestions on the meals are very minor. Both entrees were almost too large. They could easily be made a bit smaller with no loss to the meal. It's not traditional for Pork Milanese, but I would have really liked it served with a sauce.
Atmosphere was cozy, with a nice view of the kitchen. My only criticism was the overenthusiastic disposal of empty beer bottles by the bartender. That's OK in venues with live music. Not so much in a quiet restaurant.
Finally, our server Kaylee was outstanding. She knew how to suggest without being pushy and made sure to keep an eye on our table without being overbearing.
Definitely makes our recurring list.
I really love the menu and food at Butterhorn. I wandered away from my group who was dining at a typical bar/grill place in Bismarck and opted to dine alone at the bar at Butterhorn. The wine list is carefully selected and though it is small, I love all of the menu offerings. This time I had the pear and arugula salad and butterhorns - a perfect late night snack - with a glass of Boneshaker Zinfandel. The salad was exquisitely prepared and presented. The bartender provided attentive service. I'll keep coming back to Butterhorn.
Duck Spring Rolls taste delicious. The butterhorn rolls are awesome. The service was excellent. Even though the menu is on the pricey side i will definitely be back.
Great food and service. Martinis were perfect.
The chicken was a little too spicy For our taste. Our table was ready when we arrived. Look forward to our next dining experience.
Be sure to make a reservation to guarantee a table. This new locally owned restaurant features seasonal picks from around the state. The Roman Meatballs is a perfect starter with your date or significant other. It comes with two fist size meatballs perfectly seared and moist in the middle, with a cheese sauce that finishes the dish. I had the Pork Milanese, while my Wife had the Duck. The Pork Milanese is two generous thin pork fillets with a light breading fried. Almost like a Schniztel. Very delicious perfectly cooked. The Arugula salad was fresh and added depth to the dish. The sweet carrots and crisp potatoes are an excellent side to round out the dish. I recommend using the sliced lemon and squeeze the juice on the entire plate as this adds a citrus flavor to the dish that electrifies the taste buds to want more! I got the chance to sample a slice of my Wife's Duck. I have never had Duck before, so to try this I was most excited. The dish came beautifully plated. You have the seared Duck tenderly cut in half inch thick slices with a raspberry preserve and wild rice with a fresh garnish. The Duck is intended to be eaten with the rapberry preserve to add sweetness to a poultry gamey taste for a devine flavor. Each Duck slice had crispy skin that was to die for! For a first timer trying Duck this is what I had imagined it would taste like. Very delicious. The service was exceptional, the Server always checked on us and helped recommend items on the menu and hand crafted drinks. I highly Recommend this establishment.
Always great cocktails and food!
First time for us on Valintines night, a bit disappointed on the a more package for the price but food was crazy good and different than most in Bismarck. It’s a neat place and really liked the old school set up down stairs. Yes we will be back!
We have been to Butterhorn several times and love it. It is high quantity food that is worth the price. This was our first time going on a night with a special menu. Everything was fantastic! I do feel we got a little Valentine's Day upcharge, which I don't blame them for doing...yay commercial holidays. We would have been just as happy with their normal menu, but it was a nice to have something different as well. The service was also very prompt, which on a busy night is a big thumbs up!
Service was excellent and the food was outstanding.
Really great food and service
The service and food were great, albeit a bit on the pricey side. Overall, a very good place for a special occasion.
Homemade food. For example their homemade poptarts are the best Quiet atmosphere.
I was dining alone, so sat at the bar with the same menu as the restaurant. I ordered the beet, butter lettuce and pumpernickel salad for the second time and was so pleased that it was as great as I remembered. The short rib chili was fantastic and just what I needed on a super cold night. The only down side was that I had to order three butterhorns and couldn't get just one. As a solo diner, this didn't seem right, but the other two went home with me and were OK warmed up the next day. I've recommended this restaurant to many friends and will keep coming back.
The food was fine but not what I expected for the prices. The butterhorns were by far the star of the dish.
We had salads and appetizers, and they were excellent. The scallops were perfectly done, and my husband loved the meatballs. Can’t wait to try the brunch! Our waitress was very knowledgeable and cordial.
This is by far the best restaurant in our area. It compares with what you expect in big cities! Amazing food and great service in a beautiful environment! You MUST eat here!
We tried two of their top entrees, the steak Poivre and the duck.
Both were prepared, with sides, exceptionally well.
Staff stopped several times at our table.
They made a nice addition to one item, more juneberries preserves for our butterhorns.
I ordered the pasta with mushrooms. Presentation and flavor were wonderful. My only negative would be that portion size seemed small for a $21 meal. My hubby had duck with mashed potatoes and wild rice. I tried bites of his meal and it was full of flavor. We shared 3 Butterhorns which were so soft and flaky. They are a must have there. And for dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake. It was very delicious especially the purple pears. I loved the colors and decor of the restaurant. It had that historic and victorian feel which is so wonderful in downtown Bismarck. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a classy and special night out on the town.
This place is a must. Steph and her crew knock it out every time.
The food was phenomenal!!
The food is good and the service was good as well. The ambiance to me was nothing special and kind of o e toned. The thing that got me though is the prices. It is a fine dining restaurant but I didn't feel that while I was there and also the food wasn't good enough to justify those prices. I will say it again "the food was good and well cooked" but it wasn't $35 a plate good. Not everything is $35 either but everything is priced at the high end where you expect that wow factor after taking a bite and it wasn't at this place.
It was quiet because of the football game and the service was great and the food, as always, was excellent.
I used to love Butterhorn. Now … not so much. The first couple of times were great, even with one very cold server. But two trips ago they went south for me. I mean, how long can it possibly take to make a SIGNATURE DRINK?!? The answer, 45 minutes. I declined the drink and asked for my tab. The third time I asked my server about the drink.
But the last time was worse. First, I have a vegan daughter. They have exactly ONE vegan option. Second, and this one is damming, THEY RAN OUT OF BUTTERHORNS. At 6:15 pm. That’s your freaking NAME. Duh. Good food, nice ambiance, but stupidly run. Not sure I’ll be back.
Great food as before, excellent service, only disappointment was that we had 6 PM reservations and they ran out of Butterhorns! Supposedly due to a catered party in the basement - just poor planning from my point of view. Just can’t run out of your restaurant’s namesake on a rockin’ Saturday night...
The butterhorns themselves— giant crescent rolls— are wonderful. The food was good, service spotty. The worst failing was the food was not overly warm and should have been served on warm plates. We could not eat more than about half before the food became downright cold. The restaurant needs to up its game on such details.
Everything was a let down based on what we had heard from other folks. Will probably try again because anybody can have an off night. You can tell there is potential, but our service was very slow. The server was polite, though. The drinks took forever, the food took forever and was underwhelming for the price. It was loud and since we were sat in the middle of the floor people were constantly walking by and disrupting. It felt like we couldn't talk to eachother. So it goes
The steak was great, the beer was cold and my wife and I had were able to visit in a nice quiet setting.
Food was good, the butterhorns out standing and the service was excellent
First time at the restaurant and really enjoyed it. Quiet place to visit with great friends and good food. A little speedy but worth it.
We had an excellent dinner on New Years Eve!! Always delicious food and great service. I highly recommend this restaurant.
The food, service, and drinks were all wonderful. Loved the ambiance as well. Will definitely be back!
If you want excellent tasting food cooked to perfection, then look no further. Chef Stephanie changes the menu often and uses locally grown ingredients and adds a twist to each of the items. Shane is the host with the most, and he checks in with guests to ensure the experience is just right. Service is consistently good and the food is always well executed. Butterhorn is the place to go for fine dining in Bismarck.
