Butter & Whiskey
New dining option in Saugatuck. Mussels were unique, with a mustard sauce. My husband had the whiskey steak special with mushroom sauce cooked perfectly. The mushroom sauce was delicious! I could have easily eaten that by itself. Fish and chips were good, fish was fresh and not over done. Nice sides of scratch made ketchup and tartar sauce. Creamy coleslaw was just right. We will go back again.
Best burgers and fries in Saugutuck!! Recommend not having staff bring mop bucket by table while patrons are eating… a little unappetizing! We are part-time residents and will return for another try, hopefully WO the mop.
The food was excellent. I especially love the white fish dip
Great food! Fried pickles are outstanding!
We had reservations for a friends birthday dinner. Everything was fantastic! Our waiter, Keeghan (sp?), was so friendly and attentive! You felt like he was really enjoying his job and the people he was helping. The food was delicious! Other patrons were friendly and fun-lots of celebrations and everyone was eager to sing and clap for the others. Drinks, appetizers and entrees all came out in a very timely manner. Highly recommend and excited to return!
Had a great team helping us the night we went. We opted for an outside table in an area the restaurant reclaimed from a couple of parking spaces...area was covered and the night was beautiful. One small drawback was they aren't able to sell liquor to patrons in the outdoor area yet, but we survived. The food was a step above bar/pub food so there is clearly a chef involved. For instance, the fried pickle appetizer is wrapped in an egg roll shell and paired with a bit of corned beef inside before being fried. The ketchup served with the French fries was house-made and tasted fresh with nice spice notes. I'd recommend you give it a try. Note that this restaurant is less than a month old, so there may be a few things to 'let slide' but the heart of the owners and their team are in the right place and I expect great things will continue to happen!
Excellent fish and chips and that’s about it. Service was inexperienced and unpolished - maybe rude at times. Using words like “grub” and common unladylike language. Was very surprised given the price point and also excellent fish and chips. Hire some experience wait staff or send them to finishing school.
Not one of our party of 6 completely enjoyed their meal. An Irish pub should not have dried our corned beef! Fish and chips had overcooked dried out fish. Bangers we incredibly salty. Most liked their mashed potatoes but fries were soggy. Vegetable and salads were good.
They were not busy and the service was fine.
Nice space, loved our table in the front window with a cool breeze coming in. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Will come back!
Outstanding food and fun atmosphere!
Need table cloth. Cloth napkins. Lower the lights. Don’t need to see Amazon boxes refrigerator and side work area. Waiter tried. Kitchen slow front looks like restaurant the rest is too much like a sports bar
The service was very good. The atmosphere was rustic and quaint. My husband had the fish and chips which was awesome! I bought the wedge salad which was just 2 large wedges with very minimal toppings, no tomatoes, bacon Or cucumbers,,,would not recommend this dinner choice.
I know this restaurant just opened and they are working out things. I just expected the place to be more decorated like an old Irish Pub.
The first room that you walk into has a fridge and a table full of dishes. I wouldn’t want to eat in that room!
Service was good. Drinks were pricey for the size of the drinks.
Food was very good.
Everything here is housemaid. The food was excellent. We enjoyed the fish and chips and Reuben sandwich. The only downside was that the tap system went wrong and we were unable to get a Guinness.
Good drinks. I had the fish and chips. More than enough.
Really nice place. The food would have been excellent if they had not over-salted everything so much.
New place, still trying to figure things out. They were short staffed and apologized for it and asked for our patience. However, the food was excellent. Everything we had was great. give them a chance. It’s worth it.
Outstanding, can’t wait for our next visit.
Butter & Whiskey was on our list to try. Service was excellent. Our drinks and appetizer were good. My husband had the Corned Beef dinner and I had the Fish & Chips, and both were also very tasty. I love that the menu consists of many local Michigan sourced food and ingredients, and worth the extra penny to support local farmers. Would recommend!
The drinks and mushroom appetizer were ok..The rest of the meal was horrible. Our table ordered fish and chips and bangers and mash. It looked awful and he said it tasted like bad hot dogs. He has eaten this dish in England and Ireland and it was nothing like this gray and green slop. My son and I ordered fish and chips. The Atlantic cod, supposedly, was so over cooked that I should have sent it back. I did not as I did not want to make a scene. When the waiter came to the table, my husband ordered a second drink, which never appeared. The server seemed as though he wanted to be helpful, but did not agree that the fish was over cooked. It was so overdone and dry that I had difficulty cutting it with a knife. My son and I told the waiter that the meal was not prepared well. He offered to get the manager and we declined; paid the full bill and wanted to leave. The owner then came and denied that our food was overcooked as it was their best dish. He was not apologetic at all and believed we were wrong. Actually unbelievable and insulting. We will never return.
Chef Michael is incredible!! His French cuisine training shows in these delicious and interesting ‘Irish’ dishes.
The mushroom goat cheese bread appetizer is simply to die for!!
Breads and butters are wonderful and best Harp and Guinness on tap. Fish and chips is fresh cod from Alaska!
We found by accident and will be back to try different dishes and signature old fashioned;-)
I was so excited to try a new restaurant in town and in a great location. It’s the sister restaurant to the also new Taverna Rossa which is awesome! So, maybe my expectations were too high for this place. I’ll start with the good things about this restaurant: the restaurant has an open and airy atmosphere, great large bar area and the staff was super all attentive and friendly. Now the not so great— the entrance is awkward. You have to walk down the alley to get to the main entrance. On a hot summer day you get to inhale the smell of garbage as you’re about to walk in. It’s definitely not what you want to smell as you’re about to go for dinner. I’m not a restaurant designer, but I don’t know why they didn’t make the entrance on the street side. Especially with all the foot traffic on the street. Plus, when you look inside the windows from the street, all you see is empty tables, that certainly doesn’t help the situation. Then there’s the food. It needs work. The menu is limited especially for main courses. We ordered the mussels special and the corned beef mash. Mussels were good. Fresh, tasty and the sauce was flavorful and great for dipping the bread. The corned beef hash should have been the star, unfortunately we had to give it back. It was dry, overcooked and tasted like there was more salt than what’s in the ocean. As a substitute we ordered the Alaskan Cod. The fish was fresh, but the batter was also very salty and over cooked. The fries looked better than they tasted, was hard to tell if they were fresh. I’m hoping it was an off night or they’re still trying to work the kinks out in the kitchen. Definitely room for improvement, I’m hopeful.
This was my first time t this relatively new restaurant. I was very impressed by their very authentic list of Irish beers. I very much enjoyed the Guinness. I had the corned beef and cabbage which had a very modern take. The corned beef was served crispy and the cabbage was roasted with lots of other vegetables. My spouse had the fish and chips which he very much enjoyed and was quite large. My friend loved his reuben. All in all a very nice meal and great service.
Limited menu for dinner, all items were very good the fish and chips are a little pricey but very good. Service was outstanding, table was ready prior to reservation time, so we were seated right away. drink menu was very good too.
New place with a limited menu but the food was very good. The drinks were very great.
Music was a little too loud. Personally, wasn't a real pub like atmosphere. Food was amazing as well as the drinks. Service was very attentive (good thing)! Having said that, I do believe we'll be back, and highly recommended!!
What a wonderful addition to Saugatuck! Amazing drink menu, and great service! You must try the pub pickles. Chef Michael is very talented!
Anonymous, Thank you for the kind words and review. I must pass along some of those accolades to the talented team that stands alongside of me each and every day. They bring my ideas to life and add their own touch of excellence. That said, I am amazed by the reception we have received from the Saugatuck community and its many visitors. We are so fortunate to be part of this town. Thank you again....and I'll be looking forward to our next chat. Chef Alexander
Party of two. We ordered the pub pickles for a starter.. interesting and tasty. By far the most expensive fish and chips I've ordered off a menu. Unfortunately, my chips were cold and soggy. My partner had the reuben and said it was pretty good, but his fries were cold. The Irish Negroni was nothing special.. a very skimpy pour with a lot of ice. My beer was cold, but of the four choices from the tap this one tasted like Budweiser.. ick! Bottom line, the place is way overpriced for what it is. Disappointing.
Not only was the food delicious it was creatively prepared. The wait staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Specialty drinks were distinctive.
Larry, Thank you for your review and comments. We are amazed in such a short time by the many people we now can call friends. I have noted all your comments and will use them to encourage the team and make needed improvements. It is a pleasure to serve you. Thank you, Chef Alexander
Very loud Irish music playing which is fine for a bar atmosphere but it is not a bar setting.
Also, extremely overpriced for the portion and quality of food. The fish and chips is $26 for a single piece of fish and very few fries. I had to request tarter sauce and lemon wedge.
Only 3 sandwiches and 2 entrees on the menu.
The staff was very welcoming and gracious.
Won’t be back but tried it to be supportive of a new restaurant.
Lisa, I appreciate your feedback. I made a decision long ago if I ever had my chance to open a restaurant I would serve food that was fresh, locally sourced when possible and prepped/cooked in our own kitchen. You can get frozen fish at your local grocer store but not here. It might cost us a bit more to prepare and serve....but it's something I can be proud of. I am constantly reviewing our menu. I would enjoy the chance to chat with you and hear what ideas you would have for it. Chef
Great start for a new restaurant. Service was excellent and food was very good!
Anonymous, Thank you for the review and comments. We have a wonderful team committed to delivering an excellent dining experience. Hope to see you again soon, Chef Alexander
My family and I drove from Jenison to this place on Father's Day weekend, it was actually not that busy till we were about to leave. Both the food and the drinks were phenomenal, it won both my dad and I over, which is saying a lot as we're both intrepid global travelers and eaters. We even got to meet the chef/owner and they catered to our one picky kid eater! They did say the menu was going to be rolling out more options soon, so we'll definitely be back.
CheerfulThalia, Reading your review made my day...and also my team's! All of us take pride in the food/service we provide...and we are glad we were able to demonstrate that to you and your family. We know you (as all our Guests) have many choices here in Saugatuck. We consider it an honor that you chose to spend time with us. Hope to see you again soon, Chef Alexander
Best corned beef I have had in a long time! And the mushroom appetizer was really special.
Anonymous, Thank you for taking time to leave a review and comments. Growing up I would enjoy watching my grandmother cook using fresh ingredients and everything made from scratch. I always said if I had my own restaurant that's what I would do. Well here we are and I am living my dream. The team and I use only the best ingredients and make everything ourselves...even the ketchup. Yes it's more work and costs more to do....but I believe its worth it. Again thank you. Chef Alexander
Love this place! Authentic Irish Pub! Food was amazing. We had the fish & chips & corned beef reuben. Best I’ve ever had. The Irish whiskey choices were incredible. Best Fries in town. Can’t to go back.
Kimberly, Thank you for your review and comments.....I will share with the team. Fresh ingredients, sourced locally whenever possible...prepared right here in our kitchen makes the difference. Many places get their fries frozen and pushed off the back of a truck. Not at Butter & Whiskey. We wash, cut and blanch our potatoes right here every day. More work and it costs more...but its worth every bite! That said, I'm glad you can taste the difference and hope to see you again. Chef
We really enjoyed our experience and will definitely return.
gastrogem, Thank you for taking time to leave a review and provide feedback on your visit. We do appreciate your support and hope to see you again soon. Chef Alexander
Excellent service from Nicole. Great drinks from Zoe. Food was excellent and served freshly prepared. Great fish and chips and burger. Fries are hand cut and served with a tasty homemade ketchup.
JPS1, Thank you for your review and feedback....and thanks for calling out two of our valued team members. Both Nicole and Zoe are experienced professionals doing their best to delight our Guests. And we are glad you like the food. Our offerings are all made fresh in house....with many ingredients locally sources to support our community the best we can. It might cost us a bit more....might take more time to prepare, but you can taste and enjoy the difference. Thanks again, Chef Alexander
Menu is interesting snd the food is very good but expensive. $28.00 fish and chips. Much too loud - all hard surfaces. I’ll return but it won’t be your daily local at these prices.
Brand new restaurant has only been open 3 days. Food was excellent although I felt it was over priced for an Irish Pub. The fish and chips were 28.00 for one piece of fish, cheeseburger was 16.00
The wine pours seemed skimpy. Service was cheerful
