Nothing like dressing up for a nice dinner and eating in the bar.
My wife and I made our reservation two weeks before on Open Table and were expecting a nice dinner out. The hostess told they seat Open Table reservations in the bar not the main dining room. Perhaps it was just us they were restricting from sitting in the dining room. We spent some time looking for a nice restaurant and studied the wine list beforehand as we were expecting and willing to pay for a finer dining experience. When we politely asked to not sit in the bar they said Open Table reservation were put in the bar. The dining room was more 80-percent empty at the time and was never more than half full. It is a bit disconcerting to see them seat other couples in the dining room right after us.
In the bar, our server was a wonderful young woman but she had the whole bar to serve drinks to and did not have much time for a couple of diners regardless how hard she tried. Let’s face it, one of the hallmarks of nicer restaurants is they clear your used cutlery between courses. I am not sure having a basket of forks and napkins on the table, as they do in the bar, is the same thing. ;-)
Regarding the food, my wife and I had different salads and they were surprisingly below average with wilted greens and average dressing. My white fish entry was small but pretty good. My wife’s chicken entre was good. The wine and bubbles were decent especially since many were available by the glass.
So, if you plan to eat at Butch’s remember they have a restricted main dining room. You may be dressing up to eat in the bar.
Wonderful, local dinner in downtown Holland. Enjoyed the food, Rachel, our server was informative and genuinely interested in making our Anniversary dinner special. We will be back!
Waited a VERY LONG TIME for food. Husbands arrived cold after the long wait.
I was very disappointed in this restaurant given all the strong reviews. I live in NYC and was spending a birthday weekend in Holland/Saugatuck with my mother and sister. The service was poor, lethargic and unprofessional, and the food was mediocre at best. The salad was inedible. This place must be resting on its laurels from a time when they really cared about their food!
The best part of the restaurant was the décor and privacy of the tables. I will not return.
ENJOYABLE AS ALWAYS GREAT FOOD ACCOMIDATING WAIT STAFF GREAT FOOD SELECTION.
This is an intimate and lovely restaurant. We had a reservation, were seated promptly, and our waitress was knowledgeable and professional. My husband and I each had a different special, each of our dishes contained locally sourced ingredients. Our food was prepared skillfully and was presented beautifully.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting.
All in all a wonderful experience.
Another awesome meal at Butch's. Justin our server did a great job at being attentive and ensuring that the courses were not delivered before we were ready for each one. I had the "Michigan Week" special flank steak with the Dablon winery red Cabernet Sauvignon. I was blown away that the Michigan red had as much flavor as it did, with a nice soft finish that was light on the tannins. My wife had the scallops which she thoroughly enjoyed as well. We'll be back!
This is the second time my wife and I had celebrated our anniversary there. The food is always exceptional and of high quality and the service is as well. The experience is definitely worth the price and highly recommended if you're coming to Holland please give it a try.
The food was overpriced and the quality was uneven. Tasteless undercooked rolls. Boring salad with bland dressing. Extremely salty carrot soup and salt encrusted beef filet. The salmon special was better. Service was good but overly formal. Very nice dining room. The atmosphere was the nicest part.
We had an excellent meal. Our server didn’t rush us and thought through every detail for us. We had a fabulous time!
Service was great food excellent, chef prepared a vegetarian option which was off the menu and very much appreciated
Server was amazing, I can’t remember her name. My husband had the short rib and could not believe how amazing it was. When he was looking at the menu, nothing was calling his name and by the end of the meal(it was so much he couldn’t finish) he said he would drive 3 hours in a heartbeat to get that dish again. I had the filet and it did not disappoint! That mushroom risotto was absolutely delicious! We always love trying their tasty sorbet, so I was told the had passion fruit(which is my fav) and they ended up not having it which was a bummer. Overall dinner was great!
There are several things that we enjoy at Butch's Dry Dock. The food is always at a high standard. Their wines and cocktail selection is great. The service is great and very attentive. The management is customer friendly and attentive. On this occasion My wife wanted their to die for Mussels and they were out of them. Both the server and the management were apologetic and went out of their way to satisfy her. We ended up with complimentary deserts which was a great jester but not necessary. We will be back soon.
The service was excellent and the food was very good. Butch’s is a good restaurant for a special occasion.
Bruce, the “som”, graciously greeted us and led us to our window table with “happy birthday” written on the paper top. As always, Bruce made a perfect wine suggestion. Food was well prepared and good.
Excellent service and food!
Always great food and drinks, relaxed atmosphere, we tend to spend our anniversary here but need to come here more often.
Really enjoyed the ambiance and the food. Great selection of wine. Service was outstanding. We really enjoyed Hooche speak easy.
Butch's never disappoints. The service is as outstanding as the food and we always make the trip here for special occasions.
Butch's Dry Dock is a winner all around! The food is exceptional and creative. The wine is outstanding. The service is friendly and helpful. It is our favorite restaurant in the area!
Excellent all around. Cannot wait to come back.
Visiting from out of town had dinner both nights. Great atmosphere, excellent food, great service. Would highly recommend.
My birthday was wonderfully celebrated with a delicious meal and wonderful ambiance.
Once a frequent patron - Haven’t been in almost two years... with all the new options, don’t think we’ll be back. Menu is too limited and pricey for just a “good” experience. Cocktails overpriced and not that well crafted. Server was fun and attentive.
Not sure how it is decided if you get seated in the casual area or the white table cloth area. We thought we were reserved for the front but got seated in the back. We did have a reservation. No big deal but are the two places named differently?
Food was very good. Things were pretty quiet, so our server was pretty relaxed about attending to us, which was fine because we weren't in a rush.
Delicious food, wine, and excellent service!!! We loved it!
Perfect Pasta Night!! Best way to spend a Wednesday night in Holland.
Delicious! Small menu but had a little of everything. Had a quaint table for two. Relaxed dining experience.
I took my girlfriend there for her birthday and it was a good experience overall. Despite having a couple of my friends not recommend it due to some personal and professional differences, it was a very good date night. I made a reservation and got a good table and they even wrote Happy Birthday on the paper on top of the table cloth. Desert was also on the house for her, which was certainly an added bonus and it was a treat. I ate the house burger on a pretzel bun which was fantastic. It was juicy and succulent, and it had just a pinch of salt on the bun underneath that really enhanced the flavor. My girlfriend ordered the short rib, which while pricey, was delicious. All and all, without paying for desert, or alcohol, I paid about 50$ for a great dining experience. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good time in a fancy place, however it's not very kid friendly just because of how upscale it is.
If looking for a more romantic setting, ask for seating on the 8th street side of the restaurant.
The mussels and the duck confit were delicious and I would have given it a 5 star on food, however the dessert...Black Forest cake was dire, the worst I have ever been served. The cake was dried out, and the icing was awful...perhaps too much time in a freezer? Too bad because it is the ending your remember best.
Special Holiday Dinner
Undercooked steak. A burger with missing items. Mediocre dessert. Average service. I wouldn't expect much more from any Holland, MI, restaurant.
Butch’s is always wonderful. We can always count on good food, great service and ambiance. They have a great wine selection and the bartender knows how to make great cocktails. This is our favorite restaurant in the Holland area.
I was disappointed in the option of vegetarian dishes. Literally my only option was soup and a salad. Which were both amazing but it would have been nice to have at least two vegetarian entrees on the dinner menu.
Our waitress was VERY attentive without being overbearing. I was thankful that they took reservations on the weekend.
Our server indicated there was a problem in the kitchen delaying our food and brought us complimentary soup while we waited. My leftover were thrown out by mistake and the waitress had a brand new salad boxes for me to go. Which I would have never in a million years expected.
While window seating provided a bit more distance from the other tables - it was chilly- but still great ambiance and motion to the environment without it. Ring overbearing.
The food was beautifully presented and I appreciated knowing the vegetables were grown locally.
Great food. Great place.
We had the short ribs and the trout. They both were excellent.
