Butcher Shop Steakhouse - San Diego Ratings and Reviews
We have dined at the Butcher Shop several times before while visiting San Diego. It has become one of our favorites. We were in town so chose the Butcher Shop to celebrate Valentine's Day and had another wonderful dinner. We had shrimp cocktail starters, my husband had the soup and I had the spinach salad. Then for dinner we enjoyed melt-in-your-mouth filets accompanied by perfectly prepared vegetables. For desert we chose the mixed berries atop a decadent cream sauce. The service was second to none and on a VERY busy evening; the quality of food was top notch; and the price very reasonable.
We love the ambiance of the red leather booths contrasted against the rich dark stain of the walls, white linens and ornate lighting. THE BUTCHER SHOP IS "A REAL GEM"!!
Our server Elsa had a nice personality, and was quite conversant with the menu and knowledgeable about the preparations each dish. The port wine sauce/bleu cheese combo on the beef was amazing- should have saved some bread to get it all! The pasta primavera exceeds expectations. Instead of swimming in a cream sauce with tiny unidentifiable bits of veggies, this was delicately seasoned fettuccine with tiny tender spring vegetables. Lovely ambiance, especially the fireplace, molding, beams, photos. The tables (in the front room, at least, were close and others’ conversations were inescapable. Good music selections
It was my birthday, and, because my husband passed away three years ago, I decided to go to dinner by myself. All of my relatives live on the East Coast, and the friends I have here in San Diego work or they are infirmed due to their age. So, I made an appointment for ONE person at 4:00 pm. I also mentioned that it was my birthday (true!). When I arrived at the restaurant, I had my "choice" of seating .. but it looked so lonely .. to be sitting by myself, that I asked the waitress if it would be OK to eat at the bar. She said it was absolutely fine. So I did. I didn't talk with any of the patrons, but the female bar attendant did engage me in conversation. It was very kind of her, and I truly appreciated the opportunity to talk wth someone. I also received a free piece of cheese cake for my birthday, which was a welcome surprise. And, "Yes," I did treat myself to one class of cabernet that the waitress suggested. Still, it was a lonesome experience, but I did the best that I could, under the circumstances. And my meal was just fine.
Great meal. 2 sunset dinners ordered both top sirloin, baked potato, Caesar salad, scoop of ice cream. 1 prime rib dinner, baked potato, spinach salad, and one 7oz filet with bacon and onion bits, baked potato and spinach salad. Meat was done to order, very good, flavorful. potatoes cooked perfectly with all the trimmings. Very good price point for all items. I have dined on many occasions. Never disappointed.
My filet was undercooked and bland. They charged us for a birthday cake when we didn’t ask for it. They also did the same thing to the table next to us. My boyfriend was eating a piece of bread over his plate and they took the plate from under him while he was still eating. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere with a fireplace but we have found better places in San Diego.
My wife and I went as part of SD Restaurant week. The $30 dinner was good. The food was nice, and, from looking around at other tables, everybody seemed to think the same thing.
However... my "critique"..... I wished that the servers didn't act as if they were trying to get rid of you so fast in order to get somebody else to the table. It felt REALLY rushed. At one point, our server has asked to bring my dessert course well before my wife had finished her entree! I did ask her to wait, and she did.
The "bus-boys" (not sure what this restaurant calls them) were like ninjas! Very nice guys, but, boy, did they pounce as soon as the knives and forks were put on the plates.
So... Food = Good. Relaxation = Bad.
I've lived in San Diego my entire life and this was my first time dining at The Butcher Shop. I loved the ambiance, it reminded me of an old style, up scale restaurant. The food was delicious, each course absolutely did not disappoint. My husband's chowder was delicious and my steak was cooked to perfection as well as the scallops and the mashed potatoes made me want to lick my plate. The only that seemed lacking on this dining experience in comparison to other competitors in this restaurant category was the service. Our drinks were not delivered very quickly, and were not refilled quickly. It was difficult to flag down a waitstaff person and it was unclear whom was helping if our waitress was unavailable. Usually dining spots with this type of food and price have a lot more service. We tipped the standard 18% but I didn't feel it was deserved. I would hope to go again for the food but would hope that the service was better.
Love this place! Been going for years. They get the filet perfect every time—even Fleming’s can’t do that! And it’s got a cool retro vibe that I happen to enjoy. Service is always wonderful! I like the continuity of service people. Must be a good place to work as well as eat!
The Butcher Shop was, is, and hopefully will remain an old-school steak house. It is quiet enough to actually be able to have a conversation with the person/people you are with. The food is very good. The service is attentive without being overbearing. The prices are what you'd expect. The ambiance is dark wood with red leather and soft lighting.
The service was great. The place itself was a little on the darker side, but we knew that going in based on reviews. We were seated in the fireplace room, and it made the evening a little nicer. There weren't that many people either, but just around holidays, it had a festive atmosphere.
The food was a little off though. I enjoyed my peppercorn steak, wife wasn't too impressed.
