Absolutely delicious & a fun, delightful, charming atmosphere! The chef can make the dishes to order if you have any food intolerances (I ate the Bronzino & steak tartare & my husband ate the burger) . Our waiter was very helpful and very friendly. I would eat here again!

When you first go into the restaurant, the wall of whiskey is a sight to behold. We were seated promptly and even early. Our reservations were for 745 and we were told or table was ready at 730. The wait staff was polite and they really were unobtrusive. If we needed anything they were there but we appreciated they didn't stick around to make things awkward. Our table overlooked the antler chandelier and we loved the quirky there of the restaurant. Only wished the table was slightly bigger as things got crowded with a pitcher of water, 2 glasses, 2 drink orders, and food. We ordered the pig candy and bone marrow. The pig candy was good but the standout was the marrow. It was amazing!!! My boyfriend had the scallops and I had the duck pasta. Both were good. We wished there was more blue crab risotto but the scallops were large and had a nice sear. The pasta was OK but I think next time I will try the shepards pie. For dessert we had the smores. It was a great end top the meal. We had fun trying the whiskey flight as both of us are not big whiskey buffs but it says interesting to try them and note the distinctive differences. We most definitely will be back.

Took in laws to Butcher and the Rye. Food was outstanding and delicious. Service was excellent and atmosphere was great. We were seated at a cosy little table with mismatched chairs tucked into a corner, it was perfect.

Visited on a weeknight with a reservation. Our table was very tight and it was uncomfortable for the couples on either side to be in such tight quarters. Service was wonderful and our waitress was very helpful with suggestions. We ordered three small plates and an entree to share. Everything, including cocktails and dessert were solid. I would say it is worth the price point, but certainly a special occasion spot.

This is the kind of place that makes Pittsburgh's restaurant scene so interesting. For less than half the price of a wasted night at Ruth's Chris, you get a fantastic atmosphere and your choice of many intriguing entrées. That said, this place is clearly over-hyped but that's no reason not to check it out.

We had a party of 4 ladies and loved our dinners. The service was excellent and our server was very helpful in regards to both food and drinks. The menu is very unique / non-traditional...which I think is wonderful! The focus is more on "meats", but I had scallops and they were fabulous. The decor is also quite unique. The restaurant is in the heart of the cultural district - very easy to get dinner and walk to any of the theaters downtown.

Food was good. Some dishes were great. The pate was outstanding and we were dining with a French woman! Shepherd's pie was melt-in-your-mouth tender, but would have benefitted from some salt. Service was friendly, but not always attentive. Overall, a great spot in the Pittsburgh dining scene. The atmosphere is a bit frenetic, but when people are still waiting for tables at 10:30 on a Thursday night, they must be doing something right!

This was my first time to Butcher and The Rye and it has jumped into one of my favorite restaurants in Pittsburgh. The decor/atmosphere is amazing when you first walk in the door with the rustic feel and the ceiling high wall of liquor options. We were seated upstairs and learned there is also a bar upstairs as well. Everyone we encountered at the restaurant were very courtesy, which made the dining experience that much more enjoyable. I have to recommend the focaccia bread with three spreads as an app - it was delicious. I highly recommend checking this place out!

I'm clearly not hip enough for this place. Forget having a post-concert bite with friends and trying to carry on any sort of conversation amidst the preening bros and strident laughter. For those who like that scene, I'm sure it's great.

My sister and I recently went here to celebrate her birthday. We shared four appetizers -- pig candy, marrow, brussels, and mussels. Each came with ample portions and since the menu is heavily meat-based, the dishes are filling. The ambiance is nice for fine dining (though the tables are a bit small)--definitely a good place for a celebration or a romantic evening. Service was excellent.

We went for a special occasion (bday/promotion) and the food was absolutely spectacular. My only issue was that the food came out so fast and back to back to back (I know, that isn't usually a problem, but in this case it was) and we wanted to eat things warm, so we ended up being rushed through dinner within an hour (for 4 courses!). We didn't have a chance to really enjoy it or have a truly special occasion. I want to clarify that it wasn't the wait staff, per se, that seemed to be rushing us in order to keep reservations (although that could be the case, too), but just the food timing was way too quick. I left a little underwhelmed with the experience, but the food more than made up for it. Delicious!

It was our first opportunity to eat at Butcher and the Rye. To start the original table we were seated at was cramped due to another patron. They quickly moved us to another more spacious table. We ordered the pig candy which was very good. Also my wife had possibly the best short ribs she ever had and the halibut I had was extremely enjoyable as well. Overall the dinning experience was great from start to finish. I should also note due to running late we were slightly late for our reservation and they accommodated us and we never felt rushed to clear the table for the next reservation.

The small plates are interesting, well done and filling. While not the size of a full entrée, they are very close. My husband and I shared 2 meat small plates and 2 vegetable small plates and would have been happy to stop but we had already put in our order for an entrée. We weren't as impressed with the entrée, each ingredient was flavorful and well prepared but all together they did not meld well. We were happy that we brought our own wine as the wine list is sparse, but those who like spirits will be well taken care of with that particular list. Service was spot on. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful. Seating is close and the open air design make it rather loud so it may not a great place for an intimate night out.

Loved the vibe of the restaurant, though it was a bit dark. All of the food was amazing. We got the Brussels as an appetizer which were deep fried and paired with lemon aioli and parmigiano reggiano. Very good. For dinner I got the Shepard's Pie, while my friends got the Seared Scallops and the Wagyu Flank Steak. We all tried bits of each others and everything was cooked to perfection. The beef in my Shepherds Pie fell apart and melted in your mouth. The Seared Scallops were a more refined pallet, but just as good. And the Wagyu Flank Steak was juicy and flavorful. The only thing i wasn't a huge fan of was my drink. I got the Ka Le Ma cocktail, because Indiana Jones. Couldn't resist. But it just tasted odd. Overall, highly recommend!

The Mac n Cheese is this ridiculous combination of garlic, cheeses and cream that, as far as I'm concerned, has redefined the expression "comfort food". The Pig Candy....all I can say is GET! YOUR! OWN!! I promise you will NOT want to share. Tender pork belly (I know, redundant), shredded apple, cilantro and a sweet, tangy, spicy sauce. WHAT! I wanna know who was sitting around thinking, "hey, you know what would taste awesome together.....?" God bless her whoever she is. The Charcuterie platter is a collection of duck stuff, some kind of sausage and some other something or other and something that tasted like bacon. Just different tastes from a bit spicy to "earthy". And the grape mustard was pretty awesome.

I love this restaurant and love the food. My only disappointing story about this visit was our service. It was absolutely terrible. I go there all the time so I was very surprised. The waitress was so rude. We ordered 3 appetizers, and 1 of the 3 came out first, before our drinks ! And then the next 2 came out. Still before our drinks!! Then, my friend asked about her wine and the waitress got really snippy and told her that she was taking care of "her section" and then would be back! She forgot our water. She was just really bad and rude. It was so surprising and disappointing.

Beautiful, fun place. We were on time for a 6:30 reservation but barely made it across the street to Heinz Hall for 9 pm performance. Things started off well, and service was great. However, entrees seemed to take a very long time and came out one by one. My husband's short ribs came out first and looked as if they had been spilled on the way up. Then his brother's steak came out, followed by my sister in law's scallops. Despite my insisting, they waited to begin eating until my scallops arrived. This seemed to take 10 minutes. First entree arrived at 7:30 and by then we were all looking at our watches. My husband said his dinner was bad, plus it was cold. No server came back to check on us once meals arrived.

We went to dinner here for our anniversary. I had gone only for cocktails and appetizers before and was excited to get a reservation. As I expected, the drinks from the bar and the bourbon selection were outstanding. This is definitely a whiskey / bourbon drinker's place! The decor is like... turn of the century hunting lodge. It is a neat place. We had the Brussels as an app and they were incredible! Super delicious, I would order them again. However, I felt like the entres fell short. My fiance had the steak special with escargot and mushrooms. I had the scallops in blue crab risotto. Both entres were tasty but not the best ever. Overall, we would certainly go back but probably not for a special occasion.

Amazing birthday dinner. Three out of the four in our party got the gourmet burger and french fries and were astonished. No wonder they only make 20 burgers a day! I had the small plates of mac n' cheese and brussels, and it was easily the best plates of the two I've ever had. Our waitress was very attentive with our drinks, but not bothersome at all during conversation. The decor was beyond beautiful and took you out of downtown Pittsburgh for a dinner experience. Can't wait to go back!

Our meal was outstanding! We split the Pig Candy, Ceasar Salad and shared our entrees of Dirty Pasta and Waygu Flank Steak. And don't forget to get the Smores for dessert. A tasty way to commemorate our big day!

I'm a business traveller and with others we've been working our way through the top 25 restaurants in Pittsburgh. The Butcher and the Rye is now a favorite. The small plates (Brussels, cauliflower, Mac and Cheese, and Cheese board) were very good with the Brussels & Mac and Cheese the stand outs. All of us chose the scallops with risotto and all agreed it was a wonderful dish. Two of us had different cocktails and we're very happy with our selections. The place is a fun atmosphere and the bar was full on a Wednesday night but the dining room off the bar was not too noisy. We will return!

Visited the Butcher and the Rye on Saturday night. Our table was extremely small but we made it work out; our server was excellent We shared the pork candy - the kimchee was excellent but the pork itself wasn't outstanding. We both had the scallop dinner with lobster risotto - excellent meal that I would recommend. The custom mixed drinks were a treat. The deconstructive smore was an excellent choice for dessert. Overall, expect good, creative food but also expect to pay top dollar for it. I would return for a special occasion

Cocktails were awesome. Food was okay -- trying too hard to be innovative and only succeeding 20% of the time. I've done better roasted brussels at home (theirs were overseasoned and over-cheesed); skirt steak was almost inedible (chewy and accompanied by way too many gluey rice things that just took up space); but the pig candy was very nice. Service was perfect. Seated perfectly at our reservation time. Next time in Pittsburgh, we'll come here for drinks, and then find a place for dinner.

I have been here twice, and both times I have been amazed by the food--it was creative, delicious and well-executed. The desserts were truly amazing! The only thing that wasn't outstanding was the mussels. It is a little noisy--so it might not be the best choice for anyone with hearing difficulties, but otherwise a great dining experience.
