This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

Enjoyed the meal, leisurely, comfortable. Waiter was a bit snarly at the beginning, wondered if a guaranteed 20% tip was the reason?! Good food with good friends sitting looking at the bank vault…..we’d come again!

Save your time and money. Food was mediocre at best. I can not buy that this room was ever a real bank vault, just a poor recreation. Service was poor, and after just calling it quits and asking to have most of our food taken away, they still automatically charged a 20% gratuity without saying a thing. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere for dinner that respects you. This place just wants the $$.

It's tough to get five stars from me, so let's start off with that. However, the food, service, and ambiance of this restaurant were all pretty terrific. They even had Stevie Ray Vaughn in the background. The vault was pretty cool, as was the art, but I was most mesmerized by the beautiful small bar in the corner - the bartender pours a delicious Manhattan. Some detractions: Though the lamb chops were extremely tasty, I would have preferred to have more meat - the bang for the buck wasn't there. Entering the restaurant via a mid level motel, navigating around a diner, past the bathrooms and finally into the restaurant was a little less than glamorous. I would absolutely return for another meal.

Nice place, vault was cool. Food was ok, not best steak/apps I had. Think it’s more about the decor. I ordered a ribeye and it was very thin. I wouldn’t go back but glad I went.

This it the third time I’ve dined at this steakhouse! The first two times, was seated in the more formal area, inside the old bank vault. Thai most recent time, we were seated adjacent to the bar. The service was very curt, bordering on unprofessional! The food is phenomenal! It’s too bad the two aspects didn’t coordinate, to make this a pleasant dining experience!

The service good but the food was not what expected from a steakhouse. We ordered a salad the tower of greens (if I remember the name correctly) and two appetizers (Mac & cheese and the burrata). The salad was great but it was the only thing that we liked. The ribeye, the skirt steak and the tomahawk steak had no flavor. I would not recommend.

Butcher and Banker is located in what was once the safe deposit vault of a bank, now the basement of a hotel. The ambience is distinguished, the service first class, and the steaks excellent. Both times I've been there it has been quiet, very good for having a conversation. It is a block north of Penn Station, hence very convenient for someone traveling into the area, and about ten blocks south of the Broadway entertainment district--an easy walk. It's expensive but the quality justifies the price.

Nothing special, way overpriced, and just a step above a chain steakhouse like the Keg. The salad was way too salty, the steak meat grades were below average, and there wasn't even any soap in the bathroom. It's the quality of a small-town restaurant in the big city. For 3 people with 3 rounds of drinks, it was over 600 bucks

This was a great disappointment. Caesar salad room temperature and soggy and served simultaneously with the somewhat gritty oysters we ordered. Porterhouse steak seemed overly tenderized and not high quality. There are many better steakhouses in NYC.

Always a good choice especially if you're attending an event at MSG. Most of the other options close by are mediocre at best and way over priced for what they deliver. Butcher and Banker is an elevated dining experience with a unique atmosphere.

Butcher and Banker is a beautiful restaurant with great ambiance. The service was fantastic as well. However, the food was mediocre at best. There was 4 of us and only 1 dinner was delicious, the other entrees were not. For example, I ordered the pork special. Although the presentation was amazing, it was all fat, with barely had any meat to eat, in addition, it was somewhat dry. I ended up with a very upset stomach afterwards.....this was a $49 meal as well. If going to the restaurant, I'd say stick to appetizers only, they were very good.

Overall we had a good time at Butcher and Banker. The food was great, however the service could have been better. The host did not ask our preference in seating and sat us in the back. The server did not introduce himself or tell us anything about the food for example i had to ask what type of butter came with the bread. (Onion butter)..The bus boys gave us the best service and kept coming around to give us water and clear our table. The server didn’t come check up on us

Very rare for me to give a 5/5 rating. They get a SIX! Great service. Great atmosphere. Great food! Great wine! Clean! Great hostess and waiters! We will definitely be back! My only complaint was that they called to confirm the reset and to make sure I was aware of the strict dress code. So I spent good money to make sure the wife and I looked the part. However, when we walked in the first person I noticed was a gentleman that was still in his 9-5 blue collar work uniform. Then a few minutes later they was seating 3 gentlemen in jeans and white t-shirts and track jackets!

Was going to the David Chapelle show at MSG across the street. What a great and unique steakhouse in NYC inside an old Vault. Highly recommend the Tomahawk for 2. Food, service and ambiance was perfect.

Another amazing dining experience at B & B, it is our go to spot when we are heading to MSG for a show. The hand-crafted cocktails and interesting take on the scallop ceviche started the evening and it was all excellent. We moved on to the steak frites with the baby carrots which had the taste of perfection in every bite accompanied by first class service. We look forward to our next visit.

The restaurant is inside of a hotel where you have to take the elevator down to. But once the elevator door opens it's really nice with the decor and once you enter the restaurant it really has a nice decor with a actual bank vault that you can probably eat inside which I did & really loved it. The staff was so nice and friendly. My waiter ALEX was amazing to us polite, friendly, courteous and of course patient with my party. All the food was so good & looked just like online. The Manager DAVID did come around and introduced himself & made sure we had everything & enjoyed ourselves. The whole staff was nice. The bathroom in my opinion was decent but didn't match the type of decor for the restaurant which is the only thing that wasn't a 10.

Everything was horrible. Been to many NYC steakhouses and this experience was not good. Salad not good, Porterhouse steak for $129 was the worst I ever had and the creamed spinach was awful. The drinks were good! Do not go here....many other steakhouses for the same price are plentiful in NY.

The setting is an old underground bank. Service and food top notch. Ordered the Kan-Kan pork. It was presented at the table for photos then re-served to eat. Very interesting. My companion ordered the skirt steak. Also, delicious.

All of my husband and I’s expectations were met and beyond. The hostess was extremely caring and kind and the whole waiting staff did an amazing job at making us feel very comfortable. The service was fantastic, special shout out to bartender Alan who was wonderful. David Verduin, the GM, stopped by to check on our experience and told us about the history of the venue, and comped us a drink at the end of our meal. The food was very good. Because there are exceptional NY steakhouses I gave the food a 4, but probably 4.5 is more accurate. The restaurant team is working hard to build a great reputation after the pandemic, and should really get a lift from all the businesses who have moved to Hudson Yards and environs. Definitely give it a shot. The porterhouse for 2 is worth it alone.
