This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

Food was fantastic. Hands down all the appetizers entrees sides and desserts were great. We had a 9pm reservation for what I would consider a nice steakhouse. At 950 only 50 min later we were being rushed and told the kitchen was closing if we wanted desserts. Then we asked for a bourbon list and was told the bar was closing. We let the staff know we were being rushed out of their for a 9pm reservation and after that they were nice to us and did not rush us anymore. They ended with a plus but that moment of rushing us out a damper on the evening for that period. Why accept a 9pm reservation to rush us out less than an hour later.

In spite of just opening we had to wait in the hall outside until our reservation time. Then After being seated we got to hear the staff debate next week’s schedule. We were obviously bothering the staff. Very disappointing

Very nice place, good ambience, nice music in the correct volume to share a conversation. Bartender was great, many whiskys to taste. Food correct, prices of some options are ok, some others expensves.

Service was not good. Servers were sloppy, didn’t seem to care about anything. We only got 2 main courses and 2 cocktails and it took at least 20 mins for the drinks to come out then another 45 for the food. For somewhere in central Manhattan at that price point, it’s not worth it.

Ok ambiance, the dining area was in the actual vault, which was a cool concept, the lounge area seemed more comfortable with good vibes. The table setting was unimpressive to say the least, the table was wooden with no tablecloth, the utensils then sat on the bare table if your napkin is on your lap. The servings also then went down on a bare table and to me, for the price, it just wasn’t worth it to the eyes. The steak was passe I truly feel i make a better one at home. The plate itself was underwhelming, meat, roasted garlic half and i think garnish… meh! The dessert was the best part. The apple tart was scrumptious but oh so small…. They added a 20% tip automatically and the waiter still expected more. He wasn’t the best, by the way, seemed condescending and inattentive. His busboys deserved all of the tip.

It is presented on the internet by being this very upscale dining experience. They ask to wear a jacket etc. when we arrived I noticed most people dining there were in street clothes. It was very very casual. The place although it has a nice ambience, it was a bit tired. The staff very friendly and attentive. The food simple but good. It’s important for management to know they should not reprimand their staff in front of the guests. We heard the manager loud and clear yelling at a few of his employees, this is something that should be done behind closed doors. Not very professional! I would dine here again because staff was so friendly and the food was good bar food. But definitely not for an elegant high end dinner! It’s more a elegant but casual bar experience.

It was a pleasant experience, my second time back at this restaurant. This time I came here celebrating my bday alone due to a “friend” flopping on me . The manager David was so kind and accommodating to sitting me at a table within less than 10mins of my arrival. The food was delicious, however some of the staff was a bit snobby. Nonetheless,I would recommend this place & come back again.

space felt tight and while the vault is cool, if you aren't near there, I'm not sure there's a reason to go. The food was good, and a good place if you are going to MSG. The drinks were good but small for $18 a cocktail.

This place was dank. The hanger steak was awesome. The wedge salad was great too and the Mac and cheese was delicious. Service was fast and it was pleasant atmosphere. The only thing is I’d say the restaurant wasn’t exactly unique and walking in through a hotel certainly added to feeling that there are probably many other steak houses like this around. 4/5

Food was exceptional. We shared a Tomahawk steak with shishito peppers and mash potatoes. The steak was grilled to perfection. Excellent cut, very tender. Service was attentive, we were definitely not rushed. Spent three hours there on a Friday evening. Cocktails were great as well. Only thing I would add is some music.

Our server was Yelena, and she was amazing. All of the food was cooked to our liking, not needing any additional salt or pepper for taste. The environment was welcoming, and the drinks are made with a heavy hand, which is always a plus.
