Burdell is a Soul Food restaurant in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland from James Beard Finalist, Chef Geoff Davis.

Named for and inspired by his maternal grandmother, Burdell, the restaurant reflects her love for well-set tables, entertaining guests, shared meals, and laughter. Burdell is centered on nostalgia, family recipes, thoughtful and sustainable sourcing, and the forgotten impact of Black farming, ranching, fishing, foraging, and culture on American cuisine and hospitality.

The menu highlights farmers and artisans harvesting and creating excellent products around us. Paired with the food is a robust list of wine and beverages from producers around the World-focusing on wines that are farmed and crafted with care and sustainable practices.

    For parties of 7-9, your group will partake in our market-driven, multicourse Family Dinner Menu, instead of our regular a la carte menu. The price per person varies depending on what's on the menu for the week. Menu substitutions to this menu are politely declined. Kindly include any dietary restrictions on your reservation when booking so we can prepare appropriately for your visit (not all dietary restrictions may be accommodated). We do charge a cancellation fee person of $90 per person for no-shows and late cancellations as we hold the physical space in our small restaurant in anticipation of your larger party. As with everything, we charge a 20% service charge that supports livable wages for all staff as well as healthcare.

Please inform us of any dietary needs when booking your reservation.     Excellent food and service, imaginative and great. Only downside is it 's quite loud. But terrific in every other way. The chicken liver waffle appetizer was insanely good.

    I’m a fan of Southern food and have been to NOLA. I don’t think it’s my problem that I didn’t like any of the dishes. I booked Burdell after reading about it in the SF Chronicle and Food & Wine.

    My party of six was excited to go and have an experience, it was not the experience we were hoping for. Our waiter didn’t take control in the beginning, we had a to ask twice about the “family dinner” and he seemed scattered and more inretested in what was music playing for him to sing along too! Appetizers were delicious but 4 shrimp and one small piece of bread cut up into 4 sections for $24!! Best appetizers of the three we ordered was the mushrooms. Dinner came and 3 of us had the cod. It could have used more salt, good but nothing special. 2 had the Lamb chop which was good but only one and small. The pea stew was delicious as well but more like child’s portion, very small. The sides we ordered were the cornbread and the Hoppin John rice and beans and both were excellent, problem was we got the cornbread and one rice dish and were told the other one was on the way. It came after we finished our meal!!! They were very busy and it seemed as though they needed or were missing staff. Not quite sure how Food and Wine got this so wrong!!!!

    It's always a disappointment when the appetizers are the best thing on the menu. This was our experience. The mains were mediocre at best, after a dazzling start. The space is small, very noisy, and seems understaffed, with servers working very hard. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but I would not go again.

    Great ambiance and dining space. Food was really good - Loved the crispy mushrooms and spring onions with maple dipping sauce, lamb with fava beans and greens was amazing and the cornbread with honey butter and side of greens were out of this world. Cocktails were a little pricey, as they didn't seem to have alcohol in them but also weren't labeled as 'mocktails' so we were a little confused. Really appreciated that the waiter told us we may be over ordering when we kept adding to our order. He was in fact correct! We left with our stomachs full and overall, had a great experience - would definitely go again!

    Just a spectacular experience all the way around. Starting with walking in the door. Great music, ambience, decor, smiling staff. Small but excellent wine list, inventive mixed drinks, with and without alcohol. We couldn’t decide, so ordered WAY too much, wanting to try many dishes. Every one was amazing. I don’t even like cornbread, it was great. Literally the best roasted chicken I’ve ever had. How does one even MAKE cod taste so buttery delicious? I cannot recommend highly enough. A special place. Go. Just go. You won’t regret it.

    Went for Brunch and enjoyed the fried chicken and waffle , Shrimp and grits and hash browns. The fried chicken and waffle was one of the best I’ve had as the chicken was moist and the waffle was hearty. The shrimp and grits had a more delicate touch as the grits were light with a sublime sauce. The hash browns were also very good. My only disappointment were the beignets I had for dessert. They were square pillows that were good the first bite and then it got a bit hard once they cooled down. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the coffee sauce. All in all, a good first experience. I’d like to come back and try the dinner offerings. Eating at Burdells was like going to a relative’s house back in the 50’s, and the decor and dishes and coffee cups reflected that vibe.

    Every dish was familiar and yet elevated. Pairings hit all the right notes. We found the tasting menu and pairing to be a good value and want to go back to explore the other dishes. Front of house professionals were knowledgeable and fun. Great food and vibe.
