Budatai - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
This was the worst dining experience my date and I have ever had. We chose this restaurant because we had seen good reviews on the internet and read that Chef Trevino was a respected chef. If he is, I can't imagine he would want his name associated with this place. You arrive in a dingy hallway and ride an elevator up to the restaurant. It deposits you in a dark entrance area and the only reason you know you're in a restaurant is the annoyingly loud music. There were very few guests on this Thursday night which should have tipped us off, but we soldiered on. We ordered the pork dumplings to share as an appetizer. They arrived barely warmed through and rubbery with no flavor whatsoever. We did not finish them after our first taste. For an entree, I ordered the "Crispy" Crab Roll and my date ordered the short ribs. Our waiter returned to the table and said they were out of the short ribs so my date ordered the pork loin. My Crispy Crab Roll was terrible. It was not crispy at all. It was soggy with no flavor whatsoever. If there was crab in it, I couldn't find it. The soy dipping sauce was overwhelmingly salty and the wasabi looked old, like it wasn't very fresh. I took one taste of the Crispy Crab Roll and that was it for me. It was that bad. My date's pork loin was overcooked. He described it as dry and chewy. He said the only flavor in it came from the sauce which was overly sweet. We complained to the manager and she apologized and comped us on the appetizer. Fair enough, we just wanted to get out of there and save the rest of our evening somewhere else.
Second time here when visiting PR. Excellent dumpling appetizer, ahi tuna was very good as a main. Two of three tacos in second appetizer were a little bland but did not skimp on the seafood. The tuna one was slightly spicy and flavorful, would have liked three of them! Will definitely return on our next trip!
This was our favorite meal of our vacation week and we ate in many upscale places that were all excellent. The creative menu options were a treat to our tastebuds! The pork dumplings, duck egg rolls, calamari and shrimp pad Thai all had very unique twists on the more common version of these dishes. The mai tai was also awesome! I wish we would have discovered it earlier in the week so we could have come back for another meal! It will be a sure stop on our next visit!!! Highly recommended!!!
This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend when we visited PR and I have to say it did not disappoint at all! the ambience was great and the service was spectacular. Our waiter recommended a few cocktails and they were very well made. We had and appetizer but the main course was to die for. Absolutely delicious. My wife and I had a great time at Budatai.
We read about this restaurant and realized that it was just across from our hotel in on the third floor of a quiet block of stores/bank. We were glad we tried it for dinner. The downstairs entry was not attractive and the small elevator was not promising, but we got off on the third floor and were surprised by the nice decor. We were given a window seat overlooking the pretty, lively, park and street opposite. We were confused that the menu we read online did not match what was actually being used. Also, one of the items on the actual menu that we wanted to try was not available. We shared duck egg rolls which were very good. My pad tai noodles with shrimp was excellent. I think it had 11 shrimp, all perfectly cooked! My husband's fish was good, but seemed a little overdone. We had a bottle of slightly overpriced wine. All in all, a good meal.
We had high expectations, which were not met. The service is slow and casual, considering everyone in the restaurant was clearly at a business dinner. The menu is small. If you're avoiding carbs, then you'll have very little selection. Even the veggies offering is like carrots only...in a sugar sauce. The carpaccio was excellent. I had the Ahi Tuna as did my companion, and it was over-cooked. The burned side of the taro tots was face-down. Our other 2 companions had the filet, and both were way over-cooked to well done. The duck fat papas had little flavor, but weren't over-cooked, at least.
Budatai was very nice
The fusion of the Puerto Rican Asian was a great taste.
Our favorite dish was the pork dumpling appetizer they were stuffed with shredded pork and topped with black truffle and cavier with a light Asian flavored sauce.
Our entire meal was very good but the dumplings were a stand out.
Across the street from our hotel. Up several very narrow flights of metal stairs unless you are brave enough to enter a tiny tiny very old elevator. All the diners there were seated at the window to give passersby the impression that the place is full. Every other table was empty. Went at night so did not see the ocean across the park. The sushi rolls were fair. The tuna entree was fair. The pad thai noodles with one skewer of shrimp across the top was fair. The server was friendly but it was difficult to understand what he was saying. Will not return.
