Buca di Beppo - St. Paul Ratings and Reviews
Very busy night but we were seated within 10 min of our reservation time. The service was prompt and friendly- food didn’t take too long, however, a couple of the items seemed skimpy compared to what we had experienced before. The bathroom is wicked tight- other than that the decor is cute. Good music too although it was a bit hard to hear as the place was packed (and thus- loud).
Service in bar area at a high top for drinks and appetizers was terrible. Waited and waited with no bartender acknowledgement for more than 10 min while 2 bartenders were seen drinking themselves, having a great time with each other, hanging out with a few guests at the bar. When my husband finally got up from table and walked up to bar to order, neither bartender apologized and acted like complete jerks. Never cleared table when we finished appetizer and had a table full of dishes, were way more interested in unprofessional behavior behind the bar. Others in bar area equally ignored. Boys need to learn service an a little hustle.
Once we were seated in the dining room the staff was amazing, very fast and professional and attentive.
We have been to Buca di Beppo several times but this was the first time we were disappointed with our service. We waited over 45 minutes for our food and only right before the manager came out did the waitress say anything to us about our wait. She said it should be out soon and that was it. Then the manager came and brought our food and apologized for the wait. He also took one of our entrees off the bill. It was very nice of the manager to take care of us and we will definitely be back but, it would have been nice if the waitress was a little more friendly and attentive.
I can only give this experience a "good" rating because they didn't do the best job catering to our group. We were put in a very narrow, awkward spot and told the room we were supposed to be in was still occupied by another reservation. Sounds like poor planning and not our (the customer) fault.
Upon our request, we were able to use two adjacent tables for overflow seating, but it was not ideal because our group was not all seated together and this was after some awkward, tense moments of people standing around wondering how the heck we were all going to fit.
That said, once the food started coming, everyone was happy and it was all very delicious. I do still recommend Buca as a good place for large groups, just hope others have better luck than we did with timing and adequate space.
To begin with, we were seated in a not crowded restaurant next to the wait station and a door that when it opened blew cold air. Down number one. Number two was our server who obviously didn't want to be there and didn't get anything right, served us cheeses bread which we didn't order and couldn't get drink orders straight. Was less than attentive, forgot things, we had to ask him to clear used plates so we had room for other things. We ordered baked ziti which was overdone and dry. We had to ask for a side of marinara. It was 2 birthdays and a graduation celebration which was spoiled by all of the above.
3 family members went to dinner. Quite a vibrant, high noise level dining area with mostly large groups. Decorations were fun and interesting. Our booth had a vent that was blowing cold air on us the whole time, which was uncomfortable.
We ordered salad, spagetti and meatballs and fettuccini. Salad was pretty good, meatballs were huge and good. (Spaghetti was ok, but I think my spaghetti with prego is actually just as good, honestly) Noodles were very thick if you like that. The bread was not very home made tasting and definitely not as good as Olive Garden breadsticks!
Overall, I think food is inferior to Olive Garden for sure, but it's ok. This restaurant would be great for large groups. It's a fun atmosphere and you can get good value by sharing large portions. I think if I went back it would only be if I had a large group of family or friends. Not a great value with just a few people.
Our waiter Matt was well below Buca standards. Appetizer was wrong and then delivered with our meal. Wine ordered before meal arrived after we had started eating. Dessert so late some of my family had to leave before it was delivered. Matt apologized, was not rude, not friendly either. Questioned our loyalty to dining at Buca for special occasions.
Fun venue for the birthday party we had there. There are great tables for larger groups so we were able to see and talk comfortably with everyone. Food was good although a bit pricey. However, the portions were huge and we ended up with leftovers spread between three families. We had a very picky child who loved the pepperoni pizza on the kids menu also.
Our waitress was attentive, and charismatic - but did a little too much suggestive selling to the point where it got a little annoying. One of the dishes was supposed to be spicy, but it was so spicy, it was almost inedible. (A woman in our party has had that same dish at another Bucca location and loved it; she couldn't eat the dish at the St. Paul location. Restaurant should ask customers what level of spicy they want. We got a 10 on a 10 point scale and probably wanted a 4-5.) We tried the cheesy bread florentine: it was not nearly as good a a plain ol' garlic cheese bread. Apple salad, on the other hand, was FABULOUS! Overall we had a great time, Bucca's is a fun and interesting place - and the food was good, but not consistently excellent across all dishes.
Went for Valentine day with family. Had a 5:30 reservation. Was got there about 15 minutes early. Had a cocktail in bar while we waited about 15 minutes. Oddly, we were made to cash out our bar tab before we were seated. Food was great, had Valentine's special, heart shaped lasagna, garlic bread, salad and cannoli. I wasn't sure of portion so got a large pepperoni pizza for my kids. Portions were huge. The lasagna special was for 2-3, but could have fed six, and we are big eaters. The server was nice, but was lacking, had to ask several times for water and refill on pop...probably due to business of holiday. We were able to use a 15 percent off coupon on pop and pizza, but unable to use on special. The theme was 1950s Italian family restaurant decor. Not really my fav style, but it was fun and different. Will go back for the delicious food and because it is a short walk from our home.
