Buca di Beppo - Redondo Beach Ratings and Reviews
We hoped to have an amazing Thanksgiving dinner, but that did not happen. It started with our cheese bread appetizer showing up after our first entree. Then, our order came out wrong, and then our waiter disappeared. We had to call over the manager after 20 minutes to take it back. Then it was another 20 minutes and we had finished our meal when we had to grab someone else’s waiter to get our check and cancel the order they screwed up but never brought back. Worst service ever. Ruined our Thanksgiving dinner.
This comes off like a chain restaurant and is very, very noisy. The food is much like Olive Garden but much more expensive. There were constant explosions of some version of "Happy Birthday," (there must have been at least 6 birthdays while we were there on a Sunday evening) with all the wait staff singing and clapping. This is not fine Italian dining.
Especially love this place for their Take Out service: They are so thoughtful to pack cold foods completely separate from hot food, to make sure everything is well sealed and leak-proof, and have it all ready to carry out when promised.
They give generous portions, add separate container for extra sauce if you request that ( at no charge ) and make everything look pretty as a picture ! They even add a bag of fresh, warm from the oven Italian Bread so you might as well forget that dieting you planned for today !
Some of our favorite menu choices have been:
Chicken Marsala: Tender Chicken Breast with thick sliced Mushrooms in a sweet wine reduction sauce reminiscent of teriyaki sauce - really addictive flavor here !
Italian Meatballs in Marinara Sauce: Tender and flavorful, half-pounders in a naturally sweet fresh tomato sauce which I'm guessing is made with onions, garlic and basil. A side order of 3 of these big boys is $16.99. Slice into thick slabs and place on their fresh Italian Bread for instant Meatball Sandwich enjoyment.
Italian Chopped Antipasto Salad: I like to get the Hot Peppers on the side. A beautiful bounty of Italian Genoa Style Salami, Sharp Cheese, Black and Green Olives, Radicchio, Tomatoes, a touch of Red Onion, and very fresh and crisp Iceberg Lettuce served with a distinctive Vinaigrette Dressing ( If you are carrying out, get the dressing on the side and things will stay fresh and crisp. )
Fried Calamari: Light and Crisp, good with just a dash of salt, sprinkled with Parmesan Cheese, or with either their regular or Spicy Marinara Sauce. Try both sauces or combine them for medium spiciness.
Excellent food! Very slow service. We waited 25 minutes before we received bread or our drink order (which was one glass of sangria). And they serve family-style, which is great, but which also means that I was out of luck for a small side salad to accompany my main dish.
This was not our first time -- we used to go at least twice a month -- couldn't remember why we stopped going so we went Sunday night. Made a reservation and requested the bar area, since we were just a party of 2. Didn't take long to remember why we stopped going so often -- loud and salty.
We know it is a family restaurant and expect noise but, parents not controlling their screaming 4, 6 & 7 year olds was completely unbelievable. The 4 year old's piercing scream and stomping on her seat literally shook my booth seat 2 behind her. The salad was overly salty -- and it used to be a favorite. 1 small salad no beverages, loss of hearing and slow to bring our plates and water, made for an unpleasant dinner experience all for $25 + tip...it will be a while before we return, if we return. Do they really need to seat kids in the bar?
Went to the restaurant for Mother's day with the family. Great service, the Pear Lemon-Aid was awesome, I had never had Pear lemon-aid. I didn't like that in-order to park close you have to go with valet but free parking was not to far off. Overall it was a great experience.
Great service and delicious food! Also, it was nice being seared a little before my reservation (we were early). Plus the hostess seated us in the back bar area which offered roomy booths (and it was quieter) which was ideal for my elderly grandmother. Lastly, the photo gal was a nice touch so in all, it was a great visit.
Lots of empty tables but we were seated in a corner next to a table for a horrible screaming baby and near a loud party of 20. I asked if we could move and never got an answer. Horrible meal. Could not carry on any conversation with my guest. For headache from screaming baby (worst screaming baby I've ever seen encountered).
I have no problem with parents bringing children but pleaae don't force guests to have their meals ruined.
I'd this happened again in would just leave.
The valet guys were nice and we were seated very quickly, the lady taking photos was very nice to us too. Our waiter was nice enough, but it took way too long to have our drink order taken. Wait staff was passing us by left and right and no one checked on us for several minutes. Our salad was okay, but you know you're in trouble when the best part of your meal was the wine. The chicken Marsala was undercooked and the pasta we had was okay at best. Oh! I forgot! Many of our table settings were dirty and needed to be exchanged. I understand they had a lot of staff call in sick, but for a holiday (Easter) I would've expected better service. Too bad, we've always had good experiences at other locations.
For a truly outstanding dish here, you want to try the Chicken Marsala ! Tender and succulent chicken breasts and thick slices of fresh mushrooms in a glistening Marsala wine sauce that is wonderfully aromatic and sweet ! Almost like a very light teriyaki sauce but with fragrant wine !
Other dishes we enjoyed included Eggplant Parmesan, Fried Calamari with marinara sauce, and the Chopped Antipasto Salad !
If you have room, be sure to try the Mount Vesuvius Double Chocolate Molten Cake with tart Raspberry Raspberry Sauce "lava" and clouds of Whipped Cream !
Small size orders provide generous servings for 2 - 3 people, or certainly 2 people with left overs for both !
We originally asked for the Pope room, and were told the room was taken (that room was used for 40 minutes-we were nearby). Our server informed us they were short-staffed. Appetizers were left off, water was never refilled, drinks were never refilled, coffee was never offered, our table was SOCLOSE to the table behind us--I specifically requested, after the Pope no-go, the table behind where we were--that an entire row of seven women would have to move to use the ladie's room. The people behind us were very irate, as we were taking pictures, it was a huge celebration of birthdays. At exactly 2 hours, 15 minutes, the manager, who was very sweet and I'm sure doing her job, informed me that the next reservation was awaiting our table; not to rush, but it was time to "think about going." There was not even a check at that time. When there finally was, it was incorrect. We never even saw our original server again, as we are not drinkers, I assume, and this is only my feeling as I've been to a lot of restaurants with this group, servers don't love non-drinking tables. The concern is a low tip. I might be wrong, however I'm usually right. By the way, if the service is great, we tip 25-30% (including the forced group gratuity). The bus help was kinder than anyone. We all agreed, we won't be back, and have ALL been to this location over 10x each over the years. Really, really disappointing. I will be posting to Yelp tomorrow or later. Robin Long
Meatballs as big as your head. Well... almost. Everything is family style. As in, every entrée can feed an entire family. Make reservations. You aren't going to be seated if you don't. There are vegetarian options. But, I don't trust cross contamination issues. (Fun Fact: 'Vegetarian' is an ancient American Indian term. It means "Bad Hunter".)
Seriously, I have never had a bad meal from any of the BdBs. If you've never been, make reservations and go now.
