Brown & Loe
In the 1940’s, Brown and Loe was originally a produce broker with offices on the second floor of the Merchant’s Bank building. The new Brown and Loe Restaurant celebrates the techniques of curing, pickling and smoking meats, beautifully interpreted into marvelous American comfort cuisine. This is a true local venue, evidenced by the restaurant’s allegiance to the resident farmers and food artisans who supply most of the restaurant’s fresh ingredients.
Brown and Loe Restaurant is the second dining concept introduced by Harry Murphy, owner of the City Market’s popular Harry’s Country Club.

The food was cold. The poached eggs were hard boiled.
Brown & Loe is a very appealing setting with a great atmosphere. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable. Our one criticism is with the Scallops dish on the dinner menu. While the dish was delicious, it contained only 2 moderately sized scallops. For a dish priced over $20 we expected a bit more.
Honestly, one of my new favorite spots! Amazing lavender cocktail that wasn't too sweet, but perfect flavoring. Great salmon and goat cheese risotto...like WOW.
Excellent food and service! Always a great experience!
Unique items and reliable options were a perfect match- I like something new and he likes the usual. Wish the donut holes were available.
I think the service and atmosphere was great but the food was so-so. My meal was the Scallop entree and while it tasted just fine, I couldn't get over the fact it had only 2 scallops on the dish. 2 scallops?! For $24, I expect at least 3.
I won't recommend this dish and feel you ought to take it off the menu. The poor server was embarrassed.
First time to this resturant! Nice selection on the menu. Service was wonderful...not rushed to order or leave. Beautiful, old building...quiet for great conversation! Definitely will go back!
I've been to Brown & Loe many times and always love it, but this was my first time for brunch. The only down-side was they were "unable" to do egg whites because "we only have whole eggs." (Ummmmm...where do they think egg whites come from? I'd be willing to pay an uncharge for egg white.) I'm intolerant to egg yolks, so could not have any of the egg dishes. But I had been debating between an egg dish and the shrimp and grits, so I just ordered the grits. The shrimp and grits was excellent - a little spicy, very comfort foody, smooth and creamy. I ordered it sans collard greens because I hate them, but it was delicious. I also had the donut holes for "dessert" and I could have just eaten a cup of the stout chocolate sauce that comes with them -- not to say the donuts weren't delicious, but the sauce was amazing. My friend had a salad and the granola parfait -- she is often very picky, but was very happy with her food as well.
The atmosphere was fabulous for a much needed girls dinner. We loved the fresh oysters to start us off and each of our dinners had fabulous flavor. Our waitress was delightful and didn’t rush us. We will be back!
Our waiter Eric was outstanding!!!
Food was excellent....awesome service
First visit. Saturday night. Great place. Enjoyed the wine (Garnacha - light, fruity/not sweet & drinkable). Cocktail very good. One minor annoyance from the bar: drinks made very slowly (I mean like 15-20 minutes to get a drink to our table), and couldn't make one of the drinks on the menu due to missing ingredient. Other than that, all positive and top notch. Hope the bar glitch a one-time thing. Very friendly service. Loved the decor of this place - old world with modern vibe. Excellent rehab job. Long and narrow configuration with long, good-sized bar on left, tables down middle and along right wall. Now the food: Calamari appetizer well-coated, just enough to be crunchy without covering up taste, good sprinkle of grated cheese for added flavor (again, without covering up), and terrific sauces (not standard marinara, one was sweet, honey based, other was horseradish - both very good with the calamari). Salmon over risotto topped with pesto - cooked perfectly (medium rare), excellent flavor. Scallops tender and flavorful. Goat Cheese mashed potatoes very smooth tasting, just enough goat cheese to flavor/not overwhelm. Crsipy brussel sprouts delivered - nicely charred/crispy. I wasn't hungry, but had to try a dessert. OMG - warm brownie topped with vanilla ice cream - terrific. I'm a sweets fan, and this met every expectaion and beyond. Rich, darker chocolate taste in brownie, and balanced perfectly with ice cream carrying great vanilla taste. Drizzled with caramel & chocolate. All-in-all, priced at about what you'd expect for this quality. We had one drink, 2 glasses of wine, 2 entrees, 2 sides, and dessert, for about $50/person before tip. I loved this place. Definitely plan to go back. Trendy but comfortable. Menu offers hamburgers and sandwiches in addition to upscale dinners. Casual dress. Right on the corner of 5th & Walnut, at entrance to the city market/produce area. Don't miss this place!
Went before a concert. Service was great and fast! Food was all good too. Really a very good, casual spot for any occasion.
Thought we would try something different and it was amazing!! From the food, service and environment. We will definitely return soon.
Dinner at Brown & Loe is always wonderful--not only the food, the buzz, the setting, but the warmth extended by the staff and especially the manager, Josh.
Food was delicious, as usual! I am always able to find a vegetarian-friendly option accompanied by good wine and great desserts.
Great menu, service, and food options. Love their brunch and cocktail options. We love this place!
We really enjoyed our date night here. The atmosphere was great, our server was knowledgeable, and the food was good. Highly recommend.
Great wine, food, and service. We will be back!
Great service, interesting menu, creative preparations, delicious food, in a beautiful space. What more does one need or want?!
Had a wonderful brunch. Atmosphere was great, food was amazing, and the Bloody Mary and mimosa topped everything off. Will definitely be back!
I was so happy to see Brown & Loe so busy for this particular Saturday night. I have been to this restaurant numerous times and it gets better each visit. The food was outstanding and our server was such a delight. She was attentive, suggested great items and was friendly throughout our dining experience. So happy to see this little gem doing so well.
Great atmosphere and food!
The service was incredible as was the food. This is our new favorite dinner spot for my wife and I. Looking forward to returning even with friends.
Got there early for our reservation so enjoyed some happy hour libations and snacks before our meal. Wonderful Boar's ribs, yummy blue crab hushpuppies. Great service in a nice atmosphere. It did get a little loud as the restaurant filled up, but overall a great dining experience.
Though the services a little lax it wasn’t terrible and the food as usual was EXCELENT!
Food and service were outstanding, we were in a party of 5, plenty of room. Server very knowledgeable and friendly.
My new favorite place to eat and meet friends. They have a lot of gluten free options. Blueberry I cream is delicious.
Our server was fantastic. The host was also very friendly. Enjoyed our visit. Will be back.
We made reservations but we’re seated at an awful tiny little crowded table in the center of the room. People at the bar kept bumping into us. We asked to be seated at a banquet table by the wall but were told those were reserved (?). During our 1.5 hour stay several of those tables were empty so we’re not happy about that. Food and service were great.
Unique and lovely atmosphere. Beautiful old downtown building and amazing food!
Love that the menu changes with the seasons. Food is always fresh and thoughtfully presented. Staff is always friendly.
We were seated quickly and the serve was with us immediately. The food was very good, although my club was a little dry. The server remained attentive throughout the lunch. The building is wonderful--an old bank--but the high ceilings create a high noise level. Everyone on the staff was friendly.
This is one of our go to spots for a good meal. Cocktails and oysters are great along with the service.
As usual, we had great service from our servers and enjoyed fantastic food. I took my Galpal there on a no-husbands-allowed evening after work. Loved my cocktail (Pimm’s!!) with a pork belly starter to share. Main course meals were fantastic— smoked Gouda mac with a good bit of sirloin. Reservations didn’t seem necessary for a weekday evening but from experience, I suggest an open table reservation for weekends.
What a great spot! We went before Fleetwood Mac to avoid the congestion around Sprint Center. It was wonderful!!! Unique menu. Great value and you can ride the trolley right to Sprint
Upon arriving with a reservation, the hostess wanted to clean a table that was just bussed to spare the clean/set tables for larger parties (she literally told me that). I wouldn’t have minded, except when I sat down at the newly cleaned table, I realized everything was wet. The booth was wet along with the table, which then in turn got my pants and sleeves wet. I used our napkins to clean and dry it, while the hostess said “Sorry, it’s just sanitizer.”
Then while I was waiting for friends, I asked the server if there were any drink specials, and she said Happy Hour ended at 6pm. It was 5:56, I already knew what I wanted but she said it was, “Too late and the computer shuts it off.” I respect the time but I would have ordered before 6, I told her I knew what I wanted and she still denied it. I’ve never had something like that happen?
When the food arrived, no one ever checked in to see how it was.
We had dinner before heading to the Sprint Center for a concert. The waitress was very sweet and accommodating to help get us there on time. She gave us advice on the best place to park and ride the trolley. Food was delicious as well.
We had a nice lunch and were able to talk with friends. Service was great and close parking. Pork tenderloin sandwich, butter lettuce salad with chicken, scallops, berry cobbler and tiramisu was all very good.
Amazing meal! Great space! My new favorite restaurant!
My husband and I come 30 miles from Plattsburg to eat dinner at B&L. We have not been disappointed.
My only complaint is the noise level during busy times; being in our 60’s, we don’t like to have to talk loudly over the background clatter. They could add some sound-absorbing baffles without affecting the cool, updated/historic decor.
Our server was lovely this time - wish I remembered her name.
