Brown & Loe
In the 1940’s, Brown and Loe was originally a produce broker with offices on the second floor of the Merchant’s Bank building. The new Brown and Loe Restaurant celebrates the techniques of curing, pickling and smoking meats, beautifully interpreted into marvelous American comfort cuisine. This is a true local venue, evidenced by the restaurant’s allegiance to the resident farmers and food artisans who supply most of the restaurant’s fresh ingredients.
Brown and Loe Restaurant is the second dining concept introduced by Harry Murphy, owner of the City Market’s popular Harry’s Country Club.
B&L is our favorite restaurant in Kansas City. The food is always great as is the service. We really love the decor.
Valentine's dinner for two; special menu and everything we had was excellent. Atmosphere was intimate and portion sizes were perfect. Will go back.
Ambiance of the old neighborhood and building made for a beautiful and romantic evening. The food served was great and large portions .
We would definitely go back again
Food and service was great. Wait staff was working very hard. Our wait was minimal despite the fact that the restaurant was packed. You’ll definitely need a reservation because they were at max capacity. Some portions are small (3 scallops for $25), but most are generous. Overall, great.
The food and drinks were good as usual . It never disappoints!
Amazing meal and great service. We cant wait to go back!
The food is delicious ... well designed and well prepared. A true bouillabaisse! Hot and fresh blue corn crab fritters. Creative salads.
The B&G is amazing! Brunch at Brown & Loe is a great spot.
Ambiance was nice but food wasnt good. Coffee was bitter. Overall I wouldnt return.
Cozy spot with decent drinks and food. The scallops weren’t great (and only 3 of them?) but the rest of the food was solid and prices were reasonable. Our server (Martin, I believe) was fantastic - a real pro.
Very noisy on a Friday at prime time. Server was great. Food tasted good, though I felt $24 for 3 scallops was a bit pricey. Would be very selective on which friends I referred.
Senior Girl Gang lunch. The food and food choices were amazing from squash to chips to tenderloin & burger. Going back to try more. And right in the middle of great local market shopping.
First timers at Brown & Loe and we're looking forward to returning. The pimento cheese toast appetizer was the bite of the night! My wife raved about the grilled salmon with goat cheese risotto. It was the perfect sized entree. I enjoyed the meatloaf and had enough for lunch the next day. We couldn't decide on desert so had both the plum cobbler and the stout brownie. Not sure we won't choose both of them next time. Lots of great choices on the cocktail menu. The Rye Manhattan is what I've seen referred to as a Black Manhattan with Averna instead of vermouth. They also made a very nice French 75.
The atmosphere was lively, but not too loud.
Wonderful atmosphere, outstanding service.
Our group tried bison sloppy joes, meatloaf and shrimp & grits. All were excellent
Server was so nice and attentive! Food was ok-husband had a cold burger and I did not care for my portobello sandwhich.
Absolutely wonderful! Tried some new things this time! Meatloaf was amazing and my husband had the special. . seafood gumbo! Spicy but delicous! Great atmosphere with a 1940/1950 feel! Also great cocktail and wine selection!
I ordered off of the RW menu and swore it said "butter lettuce " was served iceberg lettuce instead & was never told they were out & needed to substitute it.. The shrimp & grits tho flavorful I really wish the shrimp had been grilled but it was the same texture as "ready to eat" shrimp you buy in the supermarket.. Just a Tad bit let down
Parking is terrible in the area. We were sat near the front door and the cold air coming in made it so cold that I wore my coat thru the meal. Portions were small. Food was rather bland
My favorite breakfast/brunch place in KC. Even better their brunch was part of restaurant week. Attentive, but unobtrusive service, delicious food and a great atmosphere.
We visited for KC Restaurant week and the place was packed. We had a 7:45 reservation, showed up on time and we were seated immediately. Our server was great and took awesome care of us. My only complaint, and it's really nitpicking, was about the Shrimp and Grits meal that I had. I feel like if you are going to have shrimp in a dish that you will be covering with a thick tomato based sauce, the shrimp tails should be removed. My wife had a steak and it was cooked to perfection and had great flavor. We would definitely go back for another round outside of KCRW.
We dined at B & L for the first time during restaurant week and everything was wonderful!
Very disappointing KC Restaurant Week experience on a Saturday evening. This spot is in a really cool 1920's bank building. It is setup more like a diner though. It is not a fine dining establishment and was a very poor value at $33/person for KC Restaurant Week dinner. For $100 + tab we expected more. Not to be seated in a middle section with people's butts in our faces that were seated at the bar. Not to have a Shrimp and Grits entree with only three tiny shrimp. Not to have a grilled sirloin that was more like mystery meat. I would try it one more time for breakfast/brunch if visiting the City Market on a weekend. But this is way too loud of a spot and not comfortable for a date night dinner. It's right on the streetcar line, so appeared to be a popular destination for drinks and apps at the bar before moving on for the night.
One of our absolute favorite brunch spots! The biscuits are HEAVENLY.
Wanted to try something new for our date night. My old fashioned while we waited was good. The service was good and the food tasted great. Timing was good, we didn’t have too much time between courses. I had the rye manhattan during dinner and it was good as well. The only dislike we had was that it was very loud.
Service was superb but it’s load, which we expected. The steak that I had for restaurant week was tough and tasteless. However, the salad, side and dessert were excellent.
Service was slow. Food was alright.
A wonderful downtown restaurant with very thoughtful, well trained staff and serves and a gem of a manager, Josh!
Very attentive and friendly staff. Our waitress was always smiling and seemed to care that everything was perfect. The food was cooked exactly as requested and tasted great! Definitely coming back!
Brown and Loe is a great place to get drinks and apps, but the entrees fall a little short of the bar. The service and atmosphere is fantastic though!
Loved the food!
Wonderful! The food and service were delightful. We will be back!
Restaurant Week dinner menu was awesome!
We liked our lunch. My only complaint was that it was the temperature was cool when we first arrived.
We loved trying this for KC Restaurant Week! Great vegetarian options, and great dirty martini! The smoked gouda Mac and cheese was amazing. Was a little loud, but it's to be expected in an upscale diner-like place. Will be returning!
Overall, the experience here was good. The food was fine. The service was fine. I would not go out of my way to go here again. The pretzel is pretty basic and the butter lettuce salad is nothing special. The grits were the best part of our meal -- fluffy and light. The bison sloppy joe tasted like just chili between bread. The desserts were my favourite part of the meal -- the brownie and bread pudding were both not too sweet or heavy, making it the perfect ending to the meal.
Restaurant Week 2019 ordered the shrimp and grits, very lack luster. The description listed spanish chorizo, shrimp, greens and roasted tomato sauce.. I hate no chorizo, and 3 shrimp which none of it was seasoned. I usually enjoy lunch there but not this time
Went to Brown and Loe for restaurant week. The service was fair (nice waiter however, waited a long time for food even though there were not a lot of people there). Menu was heavy on pork, and RW menu did not have a vegetarian option. The pumpkin soup was really good, the chicken sandwhich was greasy.
Wonderful experience, great food and service
Shrimp and grits were a favorite
The food was fancied up burger type place. The prices were way out of line for the offerings. The restaurant was clean and upscale and the service was great.
Food was delicious. Service was great. Will dine here again.
