Brown & Loe
In the 1940’s, Brown and Loe was originally a produce broker with offices on the second floor of the Merchant’s Bank building. The new Brown and Loe Restaurant celebrates the techniques of curing, pickling and smoking meats, beautifully interpreted into marvelous American comfort cuisine. This is a true local venue, evidenced by the restaurant’s allegiance to the resident farmers and food artisans who supply most of the restaurant’s fresh ingredients.
Brown and Loe Restaurant is the second dining concept introduced by Harry Murphy, owner of the City Market’s popular Harry’s Country Club.
The food was pretty good, our server was not. Too busy assisting others. The wait staff was great. Had the Nashville chicken and swordfish tacos and both were good..bar service very slow.
Awesome food and drinks. Great service!
First time here and the food was incredible. Our server was fantastic and everything was very timely. Also love the space!
The cornmeal trout was lovely, presented on sweet creamed corn. Total comfort food. My friend's sorta with mole dipping sauce was yummy, too.
Great food and great environment but service was slow. We will be back though!
Service was a bit slow, we were sat at 6:15 and were there until almost 8. Food was top notch though. They just seemed a bit short staffed for a busy Fri night
This was my first visit to Brown & Loe and I was really excited to go there as I liked the menu when I read it online. Unfortunately I was disappointed. Our table started with the Fried Beets and we all thought they were tasty and a unique twist on beets. The curry sauce that was served with them is a nice contrast. Then I ordered the soup of the day which was minestrone. It was different from any other minestrone I have ever had, which is fine, but it tasted like a spinach soup that had been cooking all day. It was very flavorful but not tasty enough to order again. For my main course I ordered the veggie grain bowl. Since it was on the menu under Mains, I thought the grains would be warm. Unfortunately they were straight out of the refrigerator. The veggies on top were warm, but the ratio of grains to veggies was off...way too many grains and not enough veggies.
Our server was new and she was nice and attentive. I really liked the atmosphere and would return with friends for one more try and hope to have a better experience with the menu.
Sunday brunch with a friend. Perfect weather for patio dining which was exquisite.
Our server seemed to be very knowledgeable about the menu. The food was great, but awfully messy. The crushed ice in my cocktail made it a real B to drink.
There were some flies in the room The noise level was a little high. Food and service were excellent.
They had breakfast tacos as a “trial” for the day and they were excellent! Hopefully they will make the menu. Only issue we had was the waitress did not separate our tickets as requested so one person had to treat as we both had cards for payment. We will return in spite of the error.
Service was great. We had special of dry aged beef and chicken/dumplings that were both delicious! And key lime dessert, house made mint chocolate chip ice cream great way to top off meal. Beautiful old building, nice that it’s at City Market. Plan to return and try brunch
Excellent place to meet with an old friend. Friendly staff and the salmon was delicious!
I have recommended this to several friends, but would prefer to keep this hidden gem a secret. I love the outdoor patio during good weather. The inside is bright and feels historic.
Cool vibe, great atmosphere, solid food, great service. This is a nice place to chill in a casual atmosphere. The open concept makes for a lot of noise, so don't go expecting a nice romantic meal. Also looked like it would be a tough place to go with kids--the menu and seating really don't support that.
Great place! Awesome location
We sat outside and it was delightful. The food was very good as was the service.
The food here never disappoints! I had a spinach salad with grilled salmon and the salmon was cooked perfectly.
I chose this restaurant because of previous experience. It is the perfect place to have a business lunch or a nice dinner with your spouse or significant other. Great ambiance, great people, and always great food.
Fun atmosphere, good food, and excellent service. Will visit again.
Such a fun night on the patio! Martin, our server, was a delight!!
Excellent as always! Great service, food, drinks and place! Highly recommended!
The food was too salty. Too much salt ruins the taste.
LOUD. Tablecloths or something to absorb some of the noise would be welcome. High ceilings and a huge room make conversation difficult, you have to scream to be heard. The upside: cocktails are great, food is great -- deliciously prepared and a few surprising offerings in a city where a lot of menus are on repeat. Good service, overall a bit less upscale than I initially thought (observation, not criticism). Wonderful area to stroll before or after dinner.
An absolute terrific experience! From the service to the food! You won’t be disappointed.
We had a wonderful evening and meal.
We love Brown & Loe. My wife can’t wait to go back for their smoked chicken salad sandwich and house made buttermilk chips. Delicious!
We sat in the vault - everything was delicious, perfect! My mom had a great birthday!
Service was excellent as was the food! There are so many wonderful places to eat in the City Market, but don’t forget about this one! It was a great experience.
Loved the ambiance of this place. Great location in the City Market and the food and environment was very cool.
We sat outside on a Sunday afternoon. Service was attentive, but not intrusive. Food was great, interesting and to overpriced.
I categorize this restaurant as "ok." I would never say to friends, "OMG! We have to go to Brown & Loe." Over-priced for portions and quality of food. Service was just "ok" as well. And the restaurant was WAY TOO LOUD.
Such a great area, great food and great service! The options to sit either inside or outside is nice and there was plenty of parking in the River market!
Enjoyed the meal. Quick service and great food.
The out on the patio. Sophie was very attentive. Had special chicken fried chicken. Great mashed potatoes came with large wedge salad. Also had salmon on coconut rice with mango salsa. One of the best salmon dishes I had. Very friend,y bar staff. Definitely recommend
Perfect spot for Sunday brunch. Great atmosphere, coming back to try outside seating
Friends in from out of town. They were staying at The Phillips. Invited them to meet at Brown and Loe!
Everything was very very good. Took some friends and we all will be back!!!
I loved the atmosphere it was adorable and cute. The restaurant was a little loud but the host allowed us to sit in a booth away from the parties which I liked. The patio looked fabulous. The food was phenomenal. The drinks took a long time to arrive but were great. Overall some things seemed over priced bit
The hostess’ pleasant greeting when we arrived set the tone for our brunch. The waiter was attentive and quite prompt despite a busy area. We started with the donut holes and stout ganache dipping sauce, graduated to the spinach salad (for which our waiter suggested bringing the large one rather than two small ones, for a $2 saving,) and the Summer Squash soup. All were beyond just good. The entrees — Benedicts and potato cakes — equally so. A visit to the restrooms was encouraging: they were spotless — always a good sign the whole place is kept clean. All in all, a good place to dine on all counts.
