Brown & Loe
In the 1940’s, Brown and Loe was originally a produce broker with offices on the second floor of the Merchant’s Bank building. The new Brown and Loe Restaurant celebrates the techniques of curing, pickling and smoking meats, beautifully interpreted into marvelous American comfort cuisine. This is a true local venue, evidenced by the restaurant’s allegiance to the resident farmers and food artisans who supply most of the restaurant’s fresh ingredients.
Brown and Loe Restaurant is the second dining concept introduced by Harry Murphy, owner of the City Market’s popular Harry’s Country Club.

Amazing meal! Great space! My new favorite restaurant!
My husband and I come 30 miles from Plattsburg to eat dinner at B&L. We have not been disappointed.
My only complaint is the noise level during busy times; being in our 60’s, we don’t like to have to talk loudly over the background clatter. They could add some sound-absorbing baffles without affecting the cool, updated/historic decor.
Our server was lovely this time - wish I remembered her name.
This was our first visit to Brown & Loe. The service was good and the food was tasty. We'll definitely be coming back.
First time at Brown and Loe. Great service, fun menu, comfortable atmosphere.
My husband and I went for a First Friday dinner before hitting the Crossroads. The atmosphere was lively. The high ceilings gave way to making the noise levels louder but also are a cool feature of the building. Don't plan on quiet conversation here. It does give a vibrant vibe to the restaurant. The Vault room looks to be a cool table for 6 for a special occasion.
Food was good, nothing spectacular. I had the salmon and my husband had the steak. We shared a shrimp appetizer. We like that they have local, farm to table, options. Cocktails were good too - not weak. Our waitress was good also. We would go back.
Service was great. Food and portions were nice. The interior is beautiful. The outdoor dining area could be updated a bit to match the gorgeous interior. Will definatley be back.
fantastic ambience and food for an elegant date night without having to dress up TOO fancy. love the cocktail menu, and especially the puerogi!
My partners and I met for evening dinner meeting. We all thought the entree choices were great and the food delicious! It was quiet and we were able to good conversation.
Awesome way to celebrate our friends birthday. Amazing crafted cocktails. Loved the spaghetti squash dish. Tina said, "best birthday ever". Server was fantastic. Thanks Brown and Loe.
We made dinner reservations here so we wouldn't be eating bbq every single night we were in Kansas City. The restaurant was charming and the staff friendly and efficient. We ordered a lavosh appetizer, chicken dish and a club sandwich. Portions were plentiful and the food was tasty. Some of the best french fries I've ever had. The rest of the food was good, but not memorable. A nice place for lunch if you're at City Market and want a pleasant place to eat with good food and service and a lovely outdoor seating area.
The building didn’t really stand out at first. However the food and staff were outstanding. We will be going back!
One of the best restaurants in Kansas City!! They have a great menu, amazing cocktails and a beautiful historic space.
First time at Brown and Loe. Overall our experience was fine, but with all the great dining options in KC, we would likely not return or recommend. I think the biggest detractor from our experience was the service. No one was rude or anything, the servers just seemed to be rushing around, not very interested and not particularly attentive. The fact that our table was tiny and the dining room was quite loud didn't really lend itself to a pleasant meal either. We shared several starters in lieu of entrees and the food was quite tasty!
First time there and will definitely go back. The atmosphere was pleasant and although was quiet we were able to carry on conversations without screaming. Food was excellent. Staff was very friendly.
Service was incredible and always is here. Food? Well, not so much. Ordered the jerk chicken chilaquiles for brunch. Ridiculously spicy, and I like spicy. Super soggy and soaked chips. Odd, tangy flavor on top of all of that. Just bad! Not work a $42 brunch.
We visited to celebrate work lunches and we're seated in the vault. It was a great experience for those who have never been to B&L. And a treat for all of us.
Loved everything about our brunch! We each got something different and passed them around the table to share. We had a hard time choosing a favorite, but mine was definitely the Chilaquiles :) Had to wait a couple minutes, despite reservation, but the food made up for it!
I am very sensitive to hot (spicy) food and everything I ordered was spicy and hurt my tongue. My husband loved his meal. The place was packed and everyone seemed to really be enjoying their dinners so I had to take myself out of the equation when I rated this restaurant. The service was good and the management delegated my whole entree from our bill. He also paid for dessert for us...which was delicious.
We needed a dinner in downtown zone after picking up our daughter at airport.
She loves a trendy, fun atmosphere/ aesthetic. Enjoyed our cocktails, wine, good dinner. It IS a bit noisy with all the tile and marble, but we were seated over in the corner near patio door and escaped the main noise. Good server. While we don’t normall drive this far north for a dinner, it was fun to have the excuse !
Only issue, coffee served Cold and it was supposed to be Hot.
Great atmosphere and downtown charm. We will be back!
Wonderful service and delicious food
Most perfect place for our 47th wedding anniversary dinner. Service was personal, genuinely sincere and appropriately timed. Food was outstanding. Atmosphere and decor was exactly what we anticipated and desired.
Arrived on time for reservation. Place was 70% empty but table requested was refused. Excuse.. “they were crushed with reservations.” By the time we finished our meal the place was still less than half full. That was not the only disappointment. The entree was highly overcooked. Our server noticed we weren’t enjoying the food and asked us about it. We told him it was not prepared well. He said he would have it remade but we were headed to a concert, Time was not going to allow that concession. Our server spoke to the Mgr but nothing was done to resolve our concern. In a nutshell our server was outstanding.. Mgmt and Food Preparation were highly underwhelming. There are a lot of restaurants in the River Market choose a better one than Brown & Loe.
Josh, who manages this delightful restaurant, made a special effort to accommodate our guests who are hard of hearing. It made for a perfect evening--as always!
We had a family dinner and all were disappointed in the meal. My son and I had the jerk chicken, there was was less than an ounce of chicken hidden in mushy tortillas. The egg on top was good. My husband had the chicken soup. He described it as bland. And another had a cheese burger which was okay but wasn't fully eaten. The fries were good. We were all disappointed in the food. Our server was super friendly and gave us excellent service.
Small space to fit a lot of people. All in all B&L was a great dining experience. My wife is vegan, and it is always a plus when she has more than one option on the menu. We will be back.
I brought my daughter here for lunch on a busy Saturday on a whim after running errands. I’d heard a review on local radio about the phosphates here and wanted to try it out. She immediately zoned in on the Italian cream sodas so I chose a chocolate phosphate. I thought both were yummy! She enjoyed her cream soda more than my phosphate. We really enjoyed our time together and recommend reservations on busy days (thanks, Open Table!), especially because weekend parking at the market can be torturous. Our waiter was superb! Everything on the menu sounded amazing so come hungry and expect to bring some home. We suggest the Donut holes with Stout Chocolate as a clear winner for kids and adults with a sweet tooth. The panchetta is a big enough portion to share, especially with the hearty portions of side dishes. I hope to return soon to try the other amazing dishes on the menu (& loco moco again...).
Been there several times and always had a great experience. It was not a busy night but our server was very slow. Our appetizers arrived before our drinks which were 3 beers and one cocktail. Dinner took a long time to come out and the waitress took a long time to check on us so we had to flag her down to get another round of drinks.
I’ll go back but I don’t know if the couple we were with will. It was their first time and they were disappointed with the service considering it was not busy at the time.
Very friendly and knowledgeable wait staff. Quiet enough to carry on conversations across the table. Food is very good.
Dinner entrees okay (paella & chicken breast - both a little too salty), calamari appetizer excellent, service outstanding, and it just happened to be a fabulous night to dine al fresca overlooking the lively city market. Very respectable place to dine in the area north of the DT loop.
Amazing! This is now on our must list when we visit KC again. It is super charming, the food was excellent and they were great with our two kids. I couldn't of asked for a better dinner. We loved everything about it!
Terrible service. Waited over 30 minutes for apps and server was rude.
We enjoyed a nice family lunch in the private dining vault room on an average Friday. However, it took 50 minutes for our food to arrive. The plates were all delicious and the staff took care of our family, but it did take a long time.
This was our second time at this restaurant. It was very good and we will plan on going again.
Good experience overall. Good food but not great selection. Service was somewhat uneven. Server certainly could have been more attentive and refilled breakfast coffee more often. Will probably be back but will try other options first.
Food is great. It was very busy and the bar was overwhelmed so it took a bit to get our drinks. Also, very loud hard to hear. Love the space and the food.
The service was outstanding. The food was melt in your mouth delicious. I had the peaches and cream and a butter lettuce salad with salmon. The peaches and cream were like a dream. The salmon was flavored to perfection and the portion size was filling. Everything was perfect
The food was great. It’s pretty noisy inside and we wanted to have a conversation so opted for the patio. Pimento cheese and bacon jam on toast was great. I loved the baby kale with beets salad, and had the spaghetti squash which was delicious. My husband had the trout and said it was really good as well.
I had the spaghetti squash and it was amazing- loved the goat cheese and walnuts in it. the paella was wonderful too and loved the brussell sprouts. I can't wait to go back and try other menu items. The service was great too
