What Insiders Are Saying
You might think Mexican food is best served sloppy and cheap. Downtown's Broken Spanish will prove you wrong.
The food was inventive, original and tasty. We ate ate at the bar, and the bartender had complete command of the best things on the menu. I will be back.
Limited menu but the options I selected were all well prepared, very flavorful. Great ambience for a night out with friends or your significant other.
Just wish the menu had more variety & you could have happy hour while sitting at a table as well as the bar.
Overall I would recommend trying it out & having one of their great margaritas
I've been wanting to try out Broken Spanish since I first moved to LA and was not disappointed. Innovative, delicious cuisine that challenges the stereotypes of Mexican food as being "cheap" or simple, and instead it gives it its rightful place as one of the epicurean epicenters of both the ancient and modern world.
Great food and nice ambience. A gem in DTLA that is well worth the visit. Try the quesadilla:)
Excellent food, service started well then sputtered. The noise level was well over 100 decibels for most of our meal.
Always excellent, innovative food, lovely staff.
There was too much vinegar/acidity in every dish we got (we ordered 4 dishes).
A small menu, but everything was fabulous! We tried the chicken mole and the braised lamb shank as entrees and we were blown away. Home made tortillas allows customers to custom made soft tacos. It is called a taqueria, but the ambience is anything but a traditional taqueria. Next time you are at Staples, walk the block to this fantastic restaurant.
Great food loved it will return.
Honestly one of the best meals I have ever had in my life. Every dish that came out was better than the last and the family style service allowed us to try everything. It was bursting with flavor! Everyone in my party has been raving about it since!
Loved our whole meal and the service was tremendous.
Excellent food. Service started great, then slowed significantly. High noise level, so if you’re looking for a quiet romantic date this happening and hopping spot is not the best choice. Did you hear me say excellent food though?
Great food and lovely vibe. Can’t wait to return
Truly Amazing. Food was fresh, colorful and bursting with flavor. Service impeccable!
Food and drinks are amazing. Service was spectacular and intentional!
Tostada and margarita were good but everything else was a bust
Best service and the food was amazing! What a great experience definitely coming back!
As always food is delicious and today we received much better service than ever before. Perfect dining experience.
This was our third visit to Broken Spanish, and each time we discover something new. This time it was the Whole Red Snapper, filleted at the table. Wonderfully flavored, and a great compliment to the Esquites (a repeat favorite), the Chile Relleno (unlike any I have had), the Spinach Tamale, and the Asparagus Tostada. We finished with the Flanna Cotta. Perfect evening!
Incredible layers of unique flavors in several dishes, especially the Tostada. The Chicharron is worth the money and lives up to the reviews. Everything we ate was superb and we're serious foodies. Great drink options too from the cocktails to the wines to the tequilas. Know that it's very noisy.
Service was great but the menu was confusing and food was overpriced
Celebrated my 30th Birthday with dinner and drinks here. Had an absolutely fabulous time. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was lively!
Only the noise in the main room was bad. All the rest was very good.
Great food and service!
Great service, good food though everything seemed a little over salted that night. Otherwise, no complaints.
Awesome restaurant. Good for a slightly fancy night out with your best mates. The pork belly sent directly from heavenly planes. The papas super tasty. Go and sink into Mexican excellence.
The flavors and creativity are just outstanding here. We got a LOT of food, and all of it was quite good. The cocktails are also on point
Most awesome mexican dinner outside Mexico in many years. Congratulations! The ambiance is very nice but bit too noisy ... Unfurtunately very common these days in the US ... After the first drink, people starts to shout like in a disco ...
Amazing setting and great food. A little pricey but worth it. The plates and speciality drinks are unmatched. Would definitely return. Easy walking to Staples and LA Live.
Food was outstanding!
Food is amazing but it’s far too loud to hear the person sitting opposite you which was disappointing. Maybe the lower corner tables would have been better but the high tables were just too loud.
Our group had dinner before attending a performance at the Music Center and it was our second visit and just as wonderful as we remembered it. The service is excellent & warm plus they get you out on time without making you feel rushed. Our waiter did a great job of helping us select the right number of plates to adequately feed our party of five, as well as giving us a balanced & flavorful selection. Each dish was impeccable and distinct in taste. The albondigas are amazing with a deep smoky, spicy sauce. The heirloom tortillas with whipped carnitas fat were heavenly. The lamb neck tamales have a very refined and slightly sweet masa. The chicharron is phenomenal. The person in our party that had the Flanna Cotta said it was the best desert she's had, plus it's a beautiful presentation. The cucumber/habanero/mint sorbet is amazing. Other favorites include pollo prensado, pulpo, barbacoa and fundido. If you love margaritas, order it with mezcal...you won't be sorry. Broken Spanish has made our list of favorite restaurants downtown.
Overall beautiful space, but the service was slow, food was bland and overpriced. And much better Mexican/American food in downtown.
Interesting take on latin cuisine.
I was very excited to make a reservation at Broken Spanish, as I had read on multiple sites that it was a "top LA restaurant". When I arrived at the restaurant, the hostess seemed stressed and distracted - I told her a had a reservation and she told my date and I to wait. We were seated about 10 minutes after our reservation. Honestly, my initial experience was something I expected from a snooty NYC restaurant, but not an LA staple.
Once we were seated, the experience was definitely better as our waiter was very kind and the food was brought out quickly. The food was probably a 7/10. Both my date and I ordered the quesadilla, which was great, but not for the price of $19. The best part the evening was the Mezcal Margarita I ordered which was a 10/10 drink!
Overall, my disappointment with this restaurant stems from the hype, the over priced menu, and the way we were treated upon arrival.
Great meal. attentive service, attractive setting, the food was creative and interesting without being over the top. I'd happily return.
The Queso Fundido and Borrego were exceptional! 👌🏼
The food and the service was very good. We were really excited to try this restaurant having heard from friends and seen it on the Food Channel. We were very well taken care of by the service staff. But very disappointed in how they presented the bill. There were two line items on the bill for 'service charge 11%', (although only one was actually added to the total, but two line items). I was stunned to think they were only adding 11% service charge for such great service. I asked the waiter and he told me that they put it on the bill to give 11% as a gratuity for the kitchen staff, etc. This is in addition to the gratuity that you chose to leave for the server. But the waiter also told me that you can have it removed if you wanted but had to ask. We found this to be very deceptive to customers and in very poor taste to their wait staff, who probably make less because people think that 11% is already included for them. The model is deceiving. Shame that a business puts so much investment in the quality of the food, hiring good people, etc, but in one small act of non-transparency can eliminate all that goodwill.
Great food, flavors original and bright. Service was good, not great. Ambiance was original, but loud for a dinner you want to have a conversation in.
