Eclectic menu, but all dishes surprisingly good. Will definitely add this to our list of faves in LA.
Everything was great...A little cold they sat us by near the wine cooler.
Our table was a bit off to the side and we had a hard time seeing our menus because there wasn’t enough light...:but other than that....fantastic!
we had a reservation for 2 but needed to add two more and they were great. Food and service most excellent!
What a disappointment!
I had a 5:45 reservation (7:30 game at Staples) and arrived on time. The place was less than 25% full, plenty of time at a "small plate" restaurant to make the game. Think again.
We ordered the tortillas with lentils, queso fundido, chile relleno, octopus and lamb shank. We asked about.
The lentils were excellent, rich with a fore-taste that was tart on the tongue and an after bite (I love lentils). The blue corn tortillas were fine, but nothing special. The cheese was also tart and then had a bite...I was detecting a pattern. Next came the meatballs, we told the service person that we had not ordered them. The waiter came by and apologized for the error and said not to worry about the bill. Next came the relleno...with a steak knife to cut it. That knife was needed as the chile was large, tough, and almost tasteless. After a while, the octopus showed up. A new addition to the menu (we later learned), it is a failure. Why? The octopus is grilled, cut in small pieces and then covered in what looks a lot like ratatouille with chick peas substituted for eggplant. The sauce is over-powering and almost acrid. The point of a strong sauce is to cover inferior meat or fish; here, the octopus was top notch, but ruined by being in such a sauce. (I would have this same criticism even if I liked the sauce...the chef seems not to understand when to let the base ingredient come through and when to hide it). My date asked about the time. I said that was about 6:55 and that I would ask for the check when the lamb arrived so that we could get to the game for the anthem. No lamb. Get the waiter explain the time situation, he brings the bill. Still no lamb and no explanation, but the meatballs were on the bill. Get the waiter who apologizes about the bill and brings a corrected one and free wine while telling me that the kitchen had said it would be out in 8 minutes 3 minutes ago. 10 minutes later it arrives on top of a cold mush. We sent it back.
Fantastic food and service. Outstanding chorizo taco's were only upstaged by the more outstanding oxtail quesadillas. Both are on the homemade blue corn tortillas which by themselves are super delicious. As a lifetime lover of all types and styles of Mexican food I've never seen tortillas on a menu by themselves before this.... but I understand why they are now that I've had them. Go there. You won't regret it.
Broken Spanish offers excellent Mexican cuisine and cocktail. Service is great, and helpful. I would caution anyone with a less-than-robust tolerance for piquant food to seek guidance in ordering. The downside is that the restaurant seems to encourage a very loud atmosphere that certainly is not conducive to conversation.
Very tasty! I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. I got the Borrego lamb and it literally fell apart when I touched it with my fork. Definitely recommend!
Outstanding food, balanced between spicy and delicious.
Our group of 5 ordered a couple of dishes from each of the three categories and this was plenty of food. The pulpo was excellent, as was the Brussels sprouts. The chicken mole and barbacoa were deeply flavored and very tender. The isla flotante made a great dessert to share. Excellent evening, well-executed creative dishes and great service. Would highly recommend.
It was my 2nd time at Broken Spanish. The menu is different. I was looking forward to ordering the rabbit, but it's no longer on the menu. Not disappointed as I thoroughly enjoyed the following:
Queso fundido - scrumptious and decadent / Oxtail quesadillas -outstanding / chile rellenos (not a fan) / mezcal (of course) and tortilla ice cream for dessert. mmmmmm !!
The blue corn tortillas were so yummy as well.
Love this place. Our service was excellent and we loved all the recommendations
Took my daughter for a fancy NYE meal, sublime food. Intoxicating flavors with different textures.
Overall, fabulous supper but a little pricey.
We were blown away by the amazing flavors, colors and textures of the beautiful food! Such a wonderful experience.
We were promptly seated for our reservation however we waited 20 minutes just to place a drink order and another 20 minutes wait to place the food order .The waitress never went out of her way to help us with the menu offerings, never asked us how our meal was or if we needed anything else . It’s too bad the service was so poor because the food was excellent .
The place is very nice, but the food servings are fairly small and the prices fairly expensive. Our servers were very nice and kind but unattentive and did not return even to bring us our check. We had to go and find another server to pay our bill. Probably better service food at a lower cost elsewhere.
Food and service fabulous. Creative items skillfully prepared in a timely fashion. Comfortable chairs and low noise level so conversation was easy. Simple but rustic/ elegant decor. Only took one star off of ambiance because when server was talking to diners at next table, his backside was literally our view. Tables European-style close meaning space too small for server to navigate approximately. Either move tables or expect server to talk to customers from one end of the table, not mid-table. If/when in LA again we will seek this spot out. Until then, we highly recommend it.
We have wanted to visit broken Spanish for a while and finally was able to coordinate it. The food was amazing and the waiter was great . The noise level was horrible. They had two large parties, one was a bridle shower of sorts it seemed and a bunch of drunk girls screaming. They then seated another large party with 4 drunk women at end of table that kept screaming loud to have conversation with each other. Many were asking to be seated somewhere else and complaining but the management as reluctant to do much because they had asked them to lower the screaming level and they got belligerent with them. It’s sad to sacrifice the ambiance of the whole restaurant to cater to two larger parties, especially when no private room for larger parities is available at this location. I recommend the manager review policy about this for future patrons sake.
The food was soooooo good! I took my family to Broken Spanish before an event at the Staples Center. It was the perfect place to go. It is within walking distance. The service and food were excellent! Highly recommend this restaurant.
Honestly, I would call the restaurant overrated. The food was very good, but it was extremely expensive and I just didn't feel it was worth what it cost: nothing was so delicious or unusual that I would return—and I tried the dishes that have been lauded all over the internet. The service was mediocre at best: my drink was taken away before I finished it, which was really irritating because it was by far the best thing about the meal--if I were to ever go back it would be only for drinks at the bar. And they were out of the only dessert that I was excited to try, which I only discovered 10 minutes after I ordered it, when the server came back to tell us that 'something had gone wrong with the meringue'. Really?! With the price range and reputation of your restaurant, find a pastry chef who can make a basic dessert!
Always amazing. We have been 10 times and will keep going back. They have raised prices a bit with their increasing popularity so the value has fallen slightly but the food remains consistently excellent. We had the vegetarian tamale and the frijoles for the first time and we were not disappointed. You cannot forget the chicharron unless vegetarian, truly amazing and the waiter suggested to order it with the cabbage salad which paired amazingly. As usual we ordered the refried lentils with the hand made tortillas 2x. Cant wait to go back.
Amazing food, couldn’t stop eating!
Happy they were open on Christmas Eve! They met all the dietary restrictions of 2 in our party of 7! Excellent flavors. Love the Mezcal selection.
Unbelievably rude hostess, a manager who clearly didn’t give a crap and close o inedible food. The chicharrones were so fatty they were absolutely disgusting, the queso fundido was mediocre cheese with a flaming hot sauce and it was all ungodly expensive. Avoid at all costs
We went with a 10 month old and the staff were extremely accommodating and absolutely lovely! We had a wonderful evening. The food was fantastic and the drinks even better. Definitely recommend.
This is an outstanding restaurant. Elevated Mexican cuisine at its finest. We were blown away by the depth and nuance of each dish based on the spices and various peppers used in each dish. The server lacked any knowledge about the preparation of the menu and was essentially there to deliver the food but she didn't add anything to the ambience of the meal..which is not unusual in L.A. where generally the servers would rather memorize lines to their next acting endeavor instead of the menu they are serving. Despite the unimpressive service, the outstanding culinary experience will keep us coming back!
Food was just okay, prices were exorbitant for what it was. Service was nice but extremely inattentive. Our server forgot two of our dishes and tried to pass it off as a kitchen error. When he clarified what items we were still waiting for, we asked to cancel one of them and it still came to our table—a mediocre side of Brussels sprouts for $15. This place is a joke.
The food at broken spanish is always to die for.
The food was very interesting, lots of complex flavors, and slightly spicy. The cocktails were amazing. We had two different ones each. The service was very good, professional and plenty of servers were attending to us. The one thing we were quite disappointed in was the added fee for the restaurant to cover and full time employees health insurance. They applied a tax to this. We did not ask them to remove it, just gave a slightly lower tip. We really don't appreciate this tactic.
Food was perfect and had interesting choices. We had the Whole Red Snapper, Chicken Necks, Beef Ribs (out standing) will go back just for that, wine list was ok. Was very loud, but in fairness they had a party of 16 in the room where we were, but I could see that still being loud. We sat in a room outside the main area but was very nice.
Bad food. Way over priced. Very loud. Could not even carry on conversation. Had a headache when I left and had to order pizza since the portions were so small.
Fantastic lamb neck tamales, chile relleno and Pork belly and duck meatballs. Great pregame repast
Love this restaurant! The room is great, food outstanding, service excellent and knowledgeable.
Lovely food, especially the desserts!
Excellent food and very good service. Pricey, but worth a visit.
Chef Ray Garcia's take on unique ,original flavors of Mexico made this evening a delight. This is why we go out -- to taste something truly original and unusual, even though it may cost more. The shank of borrego, or lamb, was the best I've ever enjoyed with deletable spice clinging to s semi crisp skin . The meat fell off the bone. Fabulous, original mescal-based cocktails. Luis, our waiter, made us feel very welcome. Service was very prompt and efficient!
Food was outstanding. Our server was very knowledgeable and explained all the dishes well. Our server and the kitchen was accommodating to my dietary restrictions which was really nice. Service of the waitstaff was very attentive and courteous.
Interesting and different menu. Very tasty
One of my favorites in LA. The food is amazing. I took my son there for a special dinner. We had Brussels, octopus, and the red snapper. All exceptional dishes.
The server was absolutely the best. We both had dietary restrictions and she made suggestions and adjusted some ingredients to fit our needs. I’m sorry I don’t remember her name otherwise I’d suggest you always ask for her.
Broken Spanish is a must when you’re in LA.
I give this placed slight lower marks because the busboy lied about not having sliced serranos and I found it disturbing that the waitress right away said yes we have them. Then another assistant to the waitress dropped silverware on my back never apologized and left food on my back without saying anything. This place is not cheap and we expect much netter service than this.
