Broken English Taco Pub - Lake Street
On the name, Garcia says, “I speak English with my friends, and I often find myself mixing in Spanish words because there are some phrases that simply don’t translate to English. This happens in many other languages and cultures, but that is what makes the name ‘Broken English’ fun – it is part of our daily slang.”
Flew up to Chi town to watch Hamilton!......choose this Taco Pub as our Friday evening meal...did not disappoint ...food was good! service was quick! Must try the guac! Was a bit loud ...but hey it is a pub!
The food was delicious as was the Mango Margaritas. But be warned the margaritas are small and expensive especially if you get flavored they add an up charge for that but don’t tell you until you get the bill. Better if buying the pitcher.
Decent street tacos. Fun vibe. We sat outside but the inside was really loud.
I definitely recommend BE if you're looking for drinks and also happen to want to munch on tacos. We came here for dinner but were disappointed with the food selection. The pork al pastor was delicious, but it doesn't come with beans and rice. They have great happy hour deals, too. Wouldn't recommend BE for someone looking for a full on Mexican dinner, but definitely for drinks, a fun place to hang out & drink, or if you just wanted a few tacos.
The food was great but it took them 45 min to bring 12 tacos, so we had to eat in a hurry.
It looks fantastic, colorful, fun inside & the servers were nice, but the food was awful. We love trying new restaurants & are open to flavor variety & a range of pricing. Here - pretty much everything - including drinks - is pre-packaged when tacos are best w fresh ingredients. Chips & guac app included slightly stale chips & not even a full very small bowl of guac for $9. Whatever. Three of us split a quesadilla & 3 types of tacos. Quesadilla was by far the “highlight” bc it tasted like a bit jazzier version of quesadilla from just abt anywhere. Server offered a free dessert for our incorrect order, but then we were charged for it. Mistakes happen, no biggie. But again - staff good, cute place, food bad.
We arrived about 20 minutes before our reservation, but they were able to seat us early. The food was delicious. While we ate inside their outdoor seating also looked nice.
Crazy busy given taco tuesday. Understaffed to serve given how busy it was.
It was really loud and the service wasn't great. But the food was yummy!
Food was great! Got there on a Tuesday which has two dollar tacos. Otherwise it can be a little pricey. Only downside was our server was hard to get occasionally. Took a while to get our check
Great place to eat downtown. Good, fast service. Great cocktails and gluten free options
Tacos weren’t that great; shells weren’t warmed up enough so they still had a rawness to them. Temp of the proteins (we had shrimp, fried chicken, and fish) weren’t hot. Seemed all pre cooked and just put together when the ticket went in. Because our tacos came within minutes of ordering them. It’s $8 for 2 tacos and each shrimp taco had four small shrimps and a lot of picked onion. Felt like a pickle onion taco. So the value didn’t feel there either for what you get. We ordered chips and gauc, but never got them. Definitely think there are others that’s better if you want Mexican in downtown Chicago.
Super friendly and hospitable
The food was amazing but we came in just before they closed (we didn't know) so we were a bit rushed but everything was GREAT !!
Came here for Father’s Day. Food was fine. Pretty loud. Service not great, but still.
Visiting from Arizona we didn’t have huge expectation on the food, but really wanted some margaritas. The pitcher of margaritas definitely delivered! Steak quesadilla was pretty good, nachos were just okay.
Our problem was really with our waitress. She took our order and we never saw her again till she handed us the bill. We ordered salsa which we never received, we order tacos which we never received, and we had no forks so we pulled them off another table. None of these things could be resolved because she never checked in on us. Overall, service with that particular waitress was poor but environment and margaritas were great.
Broken English was great for a quick dinner on the way to a concert. Fun atmosphere with strings of colorful lights and upbeat music. We each had 2 tacos and a sangria, and shared an order of chips and salsa. I had the fish tacos which were fantastic! The only downsides to our experience was that our table was in a very small corner making it feel quite cramped, and that both of the salsas that came with the chips and salsa were very mild. I suppose some diners would prefer that but we enjoy a little more spice!
Good food and margaritas. Was not happy that they wouldnt split the check individually.
Had an 8pm reservation- arrived 15 min early and host told us we wouldnt be able to sit until 8 - fine except there were many empty tables. And people who walked in behind us w/o a reservation were sat right away.
Food was good but took awhile due to kitchen back up. The chips and salsa we ordered as an appetizer came out with our food.
CHARGED $55 for a pitcher of margaritas, the server didnt explain we would be charged an additional $10 for a flavor, only asked us what flavor we wanted when ordering. Also, comparably two tacos cost just $8 so definitely was shocked at pitcher price.
Overall, food was good and fun atmosphere, but service was lacking due to sneaky upsell, temperamental host and late late food.
hostess was really rude because we were 5 minutes late despite the fact that the place was half empty.
Loud and has a younger crowd (under 35 for sure). 6 small tacos for $20 is a fairly good deal for the Loop. The margaritas are nice, strong and could be habit forming.
Unwelcome feeling right away. Table next to us sat after us was helped 5 minutes before us. Music was very loud. Food was nothing special. Drinks came halfway through dinner. Took long time to find a server to order anything. Definitely will not be back.
It was our first time there. My husband and i loved the atmosphere. The food was excellent and brought out to us super quick. The waiter was super nice and very attentive. We also loved the open window seating. We will definitely go back.
Husby and I were in town for the weekend and went to Broken English for lunch to catch up with an old friend. We did a 12-taco platter, tried 4 varieties. All were delicious! Service was great, kept drinks filled and the food came out pretty quickly. And they didn't shoo us out even though it was a busy Friday lunch...we were able to sit and talk long after the food was finished (sorry to everyone waiting 😬). Only complaint was the music volume; why is every restaurant starting to feel like a night club? My voice is gone after eating out this weekend and having to shout across the table everywhere we went, Broken English included.
Food and service we great. Very tasty tacos.
Music was too loud. Food was very good and mimosas were great. Server didn’t seem to know the menu. She also told us we couldn’t have another mimosa (we ordered 2 hours of bottomless mimosas) because we closed our tab after about an hour. We thought that was strange. Would have appreciated a heads up before closing our tab.
I didn't have the best experience at Broken English Taco Pub. I was seated right away per my reservation, but from there, things quickly went downhill. The service was very bad and it felt like they nickle and dime'd you the entire time. Why not just charge a little more for chips and guac vs. charging $2 for a chip refill? We weren't given enough menus / waters. Also, the guac was so small, we needed to order another one for it to serve our party of three. Unfortunately, the second guac did not arrive until after our meals came and were finished. We asked for the guac twice and it still came so late.
When the second guac did come, it came without chips. We needed to ask for chips several times and those came much later as well. The server also did not provide drink refills on the diet coke. They forgot to bring an order of tacos. We had to ask for the check twice. The food was good, but overall it wasn't a great experience.
Loved Broken English Taco Pub! We popped in here for tacos and cocktails before a concert. Very fun and lively ambiance! Tacos & drinks were delicious! Service was fast! Would totally go again!
Food was pretty good, not amazing, but good. However, the service did not help the situation. Our waiter was directly rude. The table next to us never got acknowledged & left. We wished we hadn’t put in our drink/appetizer order, so that we could have left as well. I was just shocked at how rude the server was.
Great food and Service. Would recommend the chips and guacamole and fish tacos
I love the food but the last two times I was at this restaurant the service was barely ok. Both times the servers (who were different) were completely indifferent and I felt rushed through the evening, as all they wanted was for me to leave. Broken English had been a favorite of mine, but now I doubt I’ll go back.
The tacos were solid. The service was very fast and attentive. We chose to eat outside because the music inside was too loud for conversation.
From the moment we entered, we were being rushed out. The food was fine, but nothing to rave about by any means... Especially when you have to pay for chips and salsa! One server actually took our chip basket before our chips were gone, and then came back and took my drink while I was still drinking it! I would never recommend an establishment that treats patrons in such a way.
The restaurant, food and service were great. We arrived at 6:20. The hostess acted like there was no reservation. Said the wait would be at least 20 minutes even though there was an open table. Then all of a sudden she seated us. Not sure if they really record their reservations.
Loved it. Hoping for more vegetarian taco options.
Tasty food, quick service, popular hot spot. We’ll definitely return when we’re in Chicago next.
Excellent food! Servers are attentive and upbeat! Taco Tuesday specials are the best around.

Food was good! Portions are generous! Mimosas were flowing nonstop
Thanks for the review, Monique! We're glad you enjoyed our brunch!
The restaurant had a hip, unique vibe. It was very loud, so hard to have a conversation. Worth a visit if you like spicy Mexican food.
