The octopus was chewy/inedible. The service was extremely slow and the waitress never really apologized. We never had enough silverware or napkins and therefore no one could eat their food when it was hot. She did say there were only two staff members. Our table was wobbly. It was obnoxiously loud, especially after 7. I get that it's obviously a bar/club but we wouldn't even have been there after 7 if the service hadn't been so slow. The macoroni and cheese and the Brussel sprouts were really good. The staff was very pleasant.
Clifton is número uno!!!!
I wish we could have tried the menu. But, when we arrived for our reservation time, it did not go well. We were not acknowledged for over 15 minutes after we arrived by the wait staff, management or anyone. Several other would be diners arrived after us and received the same treatment. Finally a waiter approached us and stated that there would be a very long wait, even if we had reservations. We left. Really discouraged that we received a cold shoulder after making a reservation and will probably never try Brick + Mortar again.
My husband, another couple and I dined (I guess you can call it that) on Valentine’s Day. We had a reservation at 815. When we had walked in, the host never greeted us. Walked up to the host stand several times, and walked away, without ever acknowledging us. Finally stopping her the next time to let her know we were there.
We didn’t get seated until almost 915. Ordered apps, and once we were finally ready to order our entrees, our server tells us the kitchen is out of everything and we couldn’t order food. Uh, what?!
The server was very apologetic and we appreciated it. But, what I feel that really irritated me was not ONE manager came around to apologize, or anything of the sort. I felt bad for the servers, and for anyone else who ‘dined’ and didn’t receive their meals.
Clearly they were not prepared whatsoever. And it’s a shame because I was really looking forward to trying this new place out.
So. We left at almost 10, with having to stop at a fast food place on the way home.
Sorry Brick + Mortar, we will not be returning.
The food is always great! My wife and I both love the place. Valentines Day was a mess though. The food was still great, but our 8:00 reservation wasn't honored. They had somehow overbooked. We finally were invited to share a table with another group around 8:35 and got our food around 10:00. I think they were overwhelmed and understaffed. The staff working was super friendly and very apologetic for the wait and being overbooked etc.....
As always, the food was great!
We had a reservation for 4 at 8pm on a Friday night - Valentines Day. We were not greeted for about 5 minutes, and were not seated until around 8:40 pm, while we waited, the bartender made a mistake on one of our drinks and seemed annoyed when we asked politely for another. By 10pm had only received drinks and appetizers. We asked for our check and for the main courses were still waiting for to be taken off the ticket. A manager came to our table and attempted to get us to pay for the food, which we felt was pretty shocking, given the fact that we still didn't have the food and the restaurant was starting to clear out. We refused. The drinks were not bad and the appetizers we had were fine, the server was kind and did her best, but on the whole this was a terrible experience. Do not waste your time or money at this restaurant.
I went with my friends for Valentine’s Day. We got seated after our reservation which was fine because it was a busier night and you don’t know when tables are going to get up. We were seated at 8 10 or so. We were greeted and waited for our drinks for about 25 to 30 minutes. Nobody ever returned to get our order. We were sitting there until about 9 when we decided to get the bill for our drinks. We are all in the restaurant industry so we know how busy nights can go but it was no busier than a normal night at a restaurant and nobody even apologized for the horrible service we received. I honestly can’t even believe they made us pay for our drinks after the service we had.
Went with a total of four guests on a busy Friday evening. We were promptly seated according to our reservation. The food was excellent- great flavors mixed and well presented. For apps we had tuna tartare, margarita flatbread and Brussels. For mains we head ribeye, shrimp tacos and shrimp po boy as well as steak chili. Everything had great flavor. The poboys lacked quantity of shrimp with only 6 pieces per po boy, but good flavor nonetheless. Cocktails were very good. They haven't figured out kitchen timing though and service while friendly lacked empathy for the one hour wait for appetizers and the additional one hour wait for the mains. When asked, the first time about the apps, server said it just takes a while you'll have to be patient and when asked the second time he said it is what it is. So from that point forward the unfortunate topic of laughter was the lack of comprehension of how to operate a restaurant as 2 of our 4 people serve the food service industry and understand what is broken. Atmosphere is great and loud but that's ok because that's what it is. I'll go for the good food again and hope they have figured out the service part of things.
Went on Valentine’s Day, food was not great, Steak was way over cooked offered to get me a new one but said it would take an hour. My wife and I Ordered mashed potatoes food came out with fries when we asked about it they said they ran out of mashed potatoes they never asked us or told us just brought the fries out and said nothing until we asked.
I think the restaurant was a little overwhelmed with Valentine's Day as the food took over one hour to make it to our table. The salmon was decent, but the steak was very over-cooked. Our waiter did the best he could but was stretched too thin. We'll be trying again but hopefully on a less busy night!
The food was good and our server (Kelly) may have been the most upbeat person I've been around in some time. I'll go back.
A fun place to go. Specialty cocktails are awesome! I had the Kaufman Kucukmber and it was excellent. The music was very loud when we got there and made a comment to one of the staff who asked if we would like it turned down and he did that for us which was very nice. Our server (Samantha I believe) was very friendly, helpful and available when we needed her. The hummus starter was great but we had to ask for more bread twice, as there was a large helping of hummus and not enough veggies and bread to use it all. They were very accommodating in getting that for us. As for the main course it was not a great as described. I had the grilled octopus over vegetables in a broth. The flavors were outstanding but the octopus was very chewy, not tender as described. Two people had a steak (not the filet) and both were quite fatty. I think a couple others had the salmon and they liked it very well.
Great atmosphere, great food and bottomless mimosas! I'll definitely be returning soon!
We were completely dismissed and ignored by the hostess and wait staff. The drinks were horrible and the food was nothing but lies. They offered curried vegetables and I got vegetables in a lemon sauce. They offered tandoori chicken, I got baked chicken with no seasonings. It was way too loud and I couldn't wait to leave.
This is a bar with loud music. Not a place to take family for dinner. We did not stay.
Okay- first time here. Wow! So impressed! It’s been a very long time since we have dined our and spent $100 and walked away impressed. The music was excellent- not sure who’s choice this was but great soul throwback. I was apprehensive at the menu choices- daring for a little local spot for sure. We both ordered seafood choices- so fresh and prepared perfectly! The Cesar salad was chilled, not over dressed and served in a very unique presentation. For sure the best Cesar I have had in a long while. Dessert did not disappoint! Seriously- do not miss this great little spot in Waldo! We are heading back this week! Oh and our service was wonderful. They evidently host live music! This little place might become my new favorite! Thank you for a great evening!
We went there on New Year’s Eve. We were informed that Open Table had made a mistake and not closed the restaurant for that evening. Bummer. Our reservation was for 630 and our first appetizer arrived an hour after we ordered. Our main course arrived 45 minutes later. The potatoes were cold . My husbands broccoli was cold as well.
The food and service were great! My boyfriend loved the tacos. My aunt had the salmon, which she loved. My dad also loved the double burger. Kelly the server was wonderful! Overall we had a wonderful experience!!
It’s a bar with loud music.
My daughter and I wanted something nearby, and easy. We were both pleasantly surprised by everything and look forward to returning again. It was Saturday night and not crowded, but still slightly loud overall.
I say yes that I would recommend, but it's really just 'maybe' or 'it depends'
Service was pleasant, but we waited over 50 minutes for our food which was 2 sandwiches. I asked after about 30 min. And again 45min, asking for a manager to check. Was told both times it was due to larger parties, which there were but most of the remaining tables in the restaurant were empty. Food came out and was good, but no apology for the wait. My mom's sandwich and fries were hot, but mine were not. Fried chicken sandwich was really tasty!
Great brunch spot. Been missing Coal Vines brunch and this is a great replacement with the flatbreads and bottomless mimosas.
For our anniversary we wanted to go somewhere different. Someone suggested Brick &Mortar, so I got online and scoped it out. The menu looked good and it was easy to get a reservation online. We had to cancel that because my husband was ill. They were very good about it and said they hoped my husband felt better soon.
So, a week later and another easy online reservation and we made it there. Great mix of bar seating, tall table and short tables, booths and half booths. Was a nice enough day to have the partial garage door cracked.
Our server, Ryan, was attentive, fun and knowledgeable. He made the experience even better!
Overall, we have found a new best place!
This was the first time I had been to Brick + Mortar. It's very nice on the inside and I love what they have done to the place. The problem was the kitchen staff was BLARING their Mexican music so you got this nice relaxing music intermingled with what sounded like Mexican polka music. It was SO loud it was distracting. I'm not sure if they realized the only thing separating them and the dining room is a curtain that isn't sound proof. The food was decent and I would definitely go back to try their happy hour or dinner menu...just hopefully without the kitchen music.
Good food and atmosphere
The food was really mediocre, and the service was fine in the beginning. When my friend pointed out we had been incorrectly charged for an item, the waitress gave us a ton of attitude from then on. It's definitely not worth the price for the food - food was just ok. Bummed because the ambiance is cool, but I don't see this place sticking around.
The place does not seem to really fit in KC. What it reminds me of is the same changes this group made in Chappell’s in North Kansas City. It simply does not have a comfortable feel. Staff is friendly and the service is polite. Long time Waldo/Brookside folks will likely not make repeat visits.
Didn’t know what to expect but we we very pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and service we received. Can’t wait to try it again!!
The food and atmosphere was great and the food selection has something for everyone. A little disappointed that the table we were sat at was dirty and we had to ask for it to be cleaned since no one seemed to notice it. Also had to ask for new water glass since that too was not clean since it still had lipstick from the prior patron. Hopefully staff will pay more attention to detail in the future since the remodel and new bar is great for Waldo.
Has a good vibe and nice selection of food. Hostess was too busy talking to her friends to seat us and waiter was not super attentive. Food was presented nicely but seemed okay as far as flavor. Going to try again in a few months BC feel it has potential.
Great server. Wish the food had a little more flavor.
Lots of different and interesting options for food and drinks. Wish there would have been more vegetarian options. The spinach and artichoke dip was yummy. All the carnivores in my group were very happy with their chicken, filet, and tuna poke.
Tried the street corn for the 1st time. Excellent! Nice contrast with the sriracha sauce. Have been on several occasions and had their soup of the day before, very good.
Had what must be a signature dish because it's always on the menu; the French onion soup. Good gruyere but the soup was far too salty.
Attentive service. Great looking food, brought out in a timely fashion. I recommend the short rib with farro!
Scallops we’re clearly halved, instead of full. Chicken sandwich was super basic. Food is over priced for what it is. Service was great!
Food was awesome! So glad to have this restaurant in waldo!
We ordered round of shots and were a little surprised they were $12 a piece...
Lunch time is quiet. Dinner it's busy so much louder and difficult to talk. But with that in mind I would still recommend
The only thing worse than the food, was the service. The brussels sprouts were delivered in a soup of balsamic...they were well roasted but you couldn't taste anything but overwhelming balsamic. I tried letting it run off but no one had that much time. The salmon was served skin on with soggy skin and again, had no flavor. We had to beg repeatedly for someone to take our order, bring our drinks, deliver water and deliver food. In their defense, they just launched $1 burger night, but it was only 6:00 and wasn't even fully yet. Not going to chance going back for a second round.
Relaxed atmosphere and nice vibe. Interesting and diverse menu. All four of us enjoyed our food. Both the charcuterie and cheese board were excellent. The other items, cheeseburger, tempura shrimp tacos and tuna were good as well. Our server (so sorry I do not remember the young man's name) was outstanding...he was friendly, information, & very knowledgeable about the menu. We will go back to try other items.
Only comment would be the noise level. If you like someplace quiet, this would probably not be a good choice!
