Brenner’s Steakhouse Katy Freeway Ratings and Reviews
Good cocktails, great appetizers (we had the scallops, which were fantastic), and a really neat design. They told us Brenner’s is the oldest steakhouse in Houston. The design is unique, with a large outdoors area that was impressive. My steak was pretty good, but my wife’s sea bass stole the show. FANTASTIC bread pudding. Nice spot for a date night.
We really wanted to love this place. We hoped it would become our “go to” for family celebrations but the food and service were just “ok”. Things quickly went from decent to mediocre. Our server seemed to become annoyed because I said I did not enjoy a certain ingredient. He did offer to bring me a sample which was nice, but he seemed to do it to try to force it on me, not really accepting I just don’t like something. I did try the sample and I liked it, but his demeanor left an an odd impression. I thought maybe it was a fluke but he did something similar when I changed my order from beef to chicken, while he was still standing at our table. He repeated what I said to him, loudly and abruptly. Of course I felt horrible, but truthfully, I’ve had stomach issues recently and I felt like beef would be overboard for me. I didn’t expect him to have a reaction, (it’s not like he put an order in) but again, he appeared annoyed. He also cut us off at least 2 separate times - I’m talking mid sentence. He had 2 tables, so it wasnt due to his being busy.
Apple strudel was nearly boiling - it was impossible to taste the flavor at that temperature. Chicken had no flavor. My companion enjoyed his steak.
We are glad we tried it, but won’t be returning anytime soon.
It was the night of the Super bowl with very few customers. The service was great, Matt, our server was very personable. Food was very good, small portions but plenty. The half off wine $100 or more was a special treat. We ate inside due to the cool weather but understand the garden seating is very nice.
There is so much great about dinner here. The steaks are the best in town. No other Rib eye has as much flavor & perfect cooking & texture as Brenner’s. Crab cakes are still good -just plain - maybe a bit stingy on the lump crab meat on top.
We ordered a Caesar & wedge salad. The Caesar was huge & the wedge was about 1/5 of a head.... not much lettuce. Really no Wow there.
But will return for the steaks!!
We always enjoy Brenner’s, we hav been going here since 1985. The food and service have always been very good. When Landry’s took over, we didn’t know what to expect, but honestly the place got even better. They spent money improving the grounds, and enhanced the windows so you could better see the grounds better. They rearranged the smoking and non-smoking rooms, so non-smokers were in the room with the windows. I can see they made changes outside as well.
If you want a steak, some German style potatoes, and an a good wine for dinner, there really is no place appreciably better. Lots of wait staff to see your needs are met and that the food arrives hot.
But I don’t understand the process managers use to decide what tables to speak with. After watching the manager go to every table around us, my wife flagged him down. He stayed for a few minutes, but he was no value add, he knew nothing or little of the places history. Disappointing, but I guess that occurs when you move managers around a large chain. Around the corner are a couple of fine steak hoses, but they have no history, no views; when you got it use it.
The food was excellent, the location and ambiance quaint and elegant, and the service was very good, save for one detail. My food came out wrong. I ordered a filet and was brought a ribeye. The food was rushed back to the kitchen and corrected, and everything was cooked perfectly and tasted great. The other blemish on the night was that the ribeye remained on the bill, and I did not notice until I had paid and made it home and examined the ticket further. I live close by, so I returned to the restaurant to speak to the manager, who explained the error had already been caught an corrected (though I wish they had checked my reservation and called me to say so). I assume these mishaps to be isolated and not systematic, and I would still recommend the wine (half price bottles over $100 on Sundays!), food and ambiance for those in search of an upscale dinner for a special occasion.
We visited Brenner Steakhouse this past Saturday January 13th to celebrate my husband's birthday. We had a group of 9 including 2 kids. The food was amazing, everything was prepared to our liking, very fresh and tasty. The ambiance was perfect, not too quiet but not too loud. The view of the outside patio is great. I was a bit nervous about bringing 2 kids to the dinner but it turned out just fine. They don't have a kids menu but do offer chicken tenders and a few other items for the little ones.
Overall, we had a great experience. We will be back soon!
My family has been dining here for several decades. The best part is that it has hardly changed over the years. Always a great place for special occasions and business meetings. A buddy and I had lunch on this occasion. We both enjoyed one of their famous lump crab cakes for an appetizer, and for our entree, we had the melt-in-your-mouth blackened red snapper with lump crabmeat topping. Will definitely be back soon!
One of my all time favorite restaurants. I have been coming here for years. I love the fact that it is small and comfortable. Keeping the original look and feel of the restaurant was very wise on Landry's part after they acquired the property. Wait staff is top notch and the Sunday brunch menu is excellent. The chicken fried tenderloin on the South Forty is as good as it gets!
