Service was slow which is unusual for this place. Also had to return the Chevreuil as it was not cooked as requested.
We return to Brasserie 8 1/2 for lunch many times. The service is great and food is very good, with a selection that fits many palates. We love it because the tables are not crammed together and it is quiet even when full of customers. The atmosphere during the day is very bright. I can’t comment on dinner.
outstanding cuisine. the branzino is amazing, as is the duck. this is one of my favorite restaurants mid-town, with excellent value. it is ensconced in a quiet lower level, with the walls decked with museum-quality art, accessed via a dramatic spiral staircase. It is one of the few restaurants near the theater district where you can have quality food in a setting where you can actually hear each other speak. I will continue to dine here on a regular basis.
Un super brunch à volonté le dimanche ! Pleins de plats et de saveurs tous aussi bon les uns que les autres .
Les serveurs sont parfaits et au petit soin .
Un petit plus avec La boissons illimité en supplement ! Je recommande grandement !
Food and ambiance always impeccable. Restaurant wasn’t crowded but we didn’t see a server for 10+ minutes. I think it was just miscommunication and service was great after that. Can’t go wrong with $46 prix fixe that includes branzino and filet as options!
It was a great place to have a special dinner. Everything was amazing, food is so so good. A real high end cuisine.
Dinner before Carnegie Hall
Unfortunately they did read or missed the fact that it was a big birthday so I mentioned it before our bill came as I felt they could have given us a better table & a candle with extra dessert arrived as we were ready to leave with an apology from our server. Food was very good but since we had a play to attend , we could no enjoy the extra dessert they brought to make up for the missed notation.
Brasserie 8 1/2 is a Patina Restaurant Group property that definitely does not make you feel like you are eating in
A corporate venue. It’s located on the ground floor of what used to be called the Avon Bldg on 57 th st. & 6th ave. On the way to the dining room there is a large cocktail lounge and bar. Once seated, wine & dinner menus arrived. The amuse buche was a croquet of spinach with a n apricot sauce. The $45 price fixed dinner was tempting, with a gravat lax among the starter choices, and roasted duck one if the entree choices. But once I saw the osso bucco on the a la crate side, my mind was made up. I opted for the foie gras starter, which melted in my mouth. Served on a brioche toast, with a thinly sliced poached pear & a Banyul gastrique. Heavenly. The osso bucco was also delicious and very flavorful. Served with baby carrots and Saffron Risott, the veal is served on the bone and is so tender, the steak knife is superfluous. And the stock/sauce is full of veal & wine flavor. The crepes Suzette dessert was a real treat. I haven’t seen those on a dessert menu since the 70s. Thinly sliced apples cooked in a light caramel sauce and served with the light crepes, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The perfect ending to a perfect meal. Can’t wait to return & try the gravat lax & duck! The wine list includes several selections by the glass.
8 1/2 is a rare combination in NYC. Pleasant ambience, functional, spacious, well trained and professional service, comprehensive menu for all needs and excellent gastronomical profile. In addition is a quiet place suitable for social or professional conversation.
My new favorite place to meet friends for a dinner with good value and service and quiet!
Very good welcome, service and French food. $45 PRIS FIXE Dinner with good choices. $25 foie gras that was worth it! Good wine list, although not extensive. Big,open room was comfortable and without noise. A traditional brasserie.
Not crowded, ample space, good food at a reasonable price.
An excellent value! Lovely setting, great location in Manhattan, very friendly attentive staff. Abundant, tasty and attractively presented buffet. In addition, it was quiet enough to have a conversation. We plan to return.
Fabulous New Year’s buffet brunch. Food was spectacular and it is served in a lovely, spacious setting.
Excellent buffet, with a wide choice of well prepared selections. This is a great value for the quality and variety offered in a very nice setting.
Unbelievable value for money. A gem of a find!
Brunch is fantastic, excellent choices, and variety.
We all enjoyed our New Year's Eve dinner at Brasserie 8 1/2.
We came for new year eve, and it was just perfect. The service was really professional, the food was really good and the place is really classy. There was nothi g we didn't like here. We can only highly recommend this place.
Do yourself a favor and don’t set foot in that establishment. We should’ve left when we saw how empty it was at 8pm. The food was mediocre, almost inedible, to the point where we didn’t finish our meals. The bread was cold, and didn’t feel freshly baked - not to mention that we only got 2 pieces of bread each (they don’t leave a bread basket on the table). The steak was not seasoned, and it was chewy. The seafood platter was subpar, lobster wasn’t fresh, shrimp tasted like rubber, and some of it looked flat out unappetizing (wish I had some photos to share, it was that bad). Overall we felt like everything wasn’t seasoned well if at all. For a restaurant that has a 4.5 star rating with over 3700 ratings, we were very underwhelmed and disappointed (paid review maybe?). Worst part is that we were never asked how our food was, and weren’t able to provide feedback - almost as if they already know the answer. We felt like we paid $190 for good wine (something they didn’t prepare themselves), the fries that came with the steak and a side of mac and cheese - none of which were the main meals.
The service wasn’t great either, but the waitress was nice. We were 2 people, they sat us in a booth meant for 4, but never removed the extra covers. We had to do that ourselves as it was overwhelmingly crowded on the table.
Went to celebrate my husband's birthday. BRUNCH AMAZING! Quality and quantity of food is grade A. Only wished they offered both bottomless mimosas and screwdrivers.
This has become our favorite place for dinner when we’re in New York City. Their prix fixe dinner option is a real chance to taste some of their specialty items and a great value. We recommend it all the time to friends and the feedback is always good.
Great food, great service, great ambiance, and great value
Try the duck ...
Another great experience at this wonderful hidden gem. The Prix Fix menu is an incredible value! You'll love this place!
My wife and I dined here on a Thursday night during Christmas week. Had a 7 :30 reservation. Place was pretty empty when we got there but more people came later. However, it was by no means packed. We were promptly seated and given our menus and asked by the waitress what king of water would we like. After that, we were completely ignored. No water, no waitress. Wait staff was walking all around us, but nobody even bothered looking toward us. My wife and I had clean clothes on and we did shower in the morning, so I can't figure out why we were being shunned. I got fed up and flag down the hostess, who was very gracious (forgot to get her name). After speaking to her, bread, water, and a waitress miraculously appeared at our table. We ordered drinks and both elected the $45 prix fixed dinners, which seem to be good values. We had smoked salmon and escargot for apps and an extra green salad. Entrees were filet mignon and bronzino filet. Food was well seasoned and cooked to requested doneness. Dessert came with the meal, so we had an apple and a pear tart. We had coffee and double expresso which were not included . The poor service may be attributed to the fact that the wait staff was young and not that experienced. Hopefully, they will learn to look around and see how all the guest are doing and not just the ones assigned to their stations. My wife actually ate here a couple of weeks ago and did not encountered any service issues, so maybe I'll give the place another try in the future.
Excellent French restaurant. The food is delicious and attractively presented. The service is attentive and professional. Nice choices on the wine list by the glass or bottle.
One of my favorite restaurants--and didn't disappoint on this visit. Wonderful food and service--we always feel welcome and well taken care of. It's pricey, yes, but so worth it!
What an amazing night, what a way to celebrate Christmas.
Our first experience here was for Christmas Day dinner, and it didn't disappoint. It was a prix-fixe menu with more than enough choices for appetizer, main course, and desert. Minor disappointment: I broke my rule on a new place and ordered my filet mignon medium rare. I should have said rare. Having said that another of my party got a perfect medium rare. The atmosphere is lovely and the service outstanding. We'll be back.
Went to the restaurant on Christmas. Despite being very busy, the service was unrushed, and for a large room, the noise level was well under control. Everything was very well organized. We had the prix fixe dinner, which was a good value at $65 per person, especially given the neighborhood. All dishes were unspectacular, but very good. I would return.
Christmas Day dinner
Everyone there was super warm and friendly. The food was delicious and they were very helpful with our baby and baby supplies. We had a delicious steak and our little girl loved the French fries !
It is hard to find a reasonably priced prix-fixe menu for Christmas dinner; at $67pp; this was a true winner. A very extensive and creative menu, unlike most other restaurant choices. The food was delicious; and it is quite a lovely venue. I highly recommend for any occasion.
Lovely spot for Christmas dinner. My appetizer of Gravalax was tasty and not salty. which is excellent. The Filet Mignon was perfectly medium rare but I did not care for the over whipped potatoes. Desserts did not measure up to the other two courses.
Great food and service. Had a lovely Christmas meal here
Sarah was great and made the evening special. The place is great.
The restaurant has a cool ambiance, well-trained staff and good food. Great for special occasions or just a nice evening out or for a business meal.
Great Christmas dinner
I was impressed with the look of the restaurant when we walked in. We were seated right away and our wait person gave us our menus and asked if we'd like something to drink. So far, so good. But we had to ask for bread and then remind them about our drink order. The bread was salty; had chunks of salt on top. Definitely not something I like on my bread. When our appetizers arrived, one of them was wrong and had to be changed. The food, when it came, was good. I started with the crab cake and then had the duck. The crab cake was good, but I've had better. I enjoyed the duck. Gingerbread pudding was my dessert and that I really liked.
The restaurant is in a business district and should be used to crowds of people. However, it didn't seem that way to me.
