I felt I was on board a 1 hour flight and the meal service had to be completed before landing.
the airline imagery was reinforced by the awful food. no sooner had our order been placed than
the first course arrived. the main course was served almost before the appetizer plates were cleared. the first course foie gras was served next to a sloppy spongy unidentifiable disk of something or other. the main course lobster was okay but the beef wellington was not edible.
dessert, the course that should seal the fond memories of a meal was the worst. a chocolate mousse cake was a confusion of flavors and textures that simply did not please. a recommended
crepe souffle looked to have been manufactured months ago at some distant factory. it was deplorable. all in all a misery of a dining experience.

I came to Brasserie 8 1/2 for a Valentine’s day dinner with high expectations.. not only did Brasserie exceed my expectations, I thoroughly enjoyed the options that were available on the prix-fixe menu. I enjoyed a lovely meal consisting of crispy oysters, foie gras, beef Wellington and a lovely slice of chocolate cake! My waiter was attentive and had a lovely sense of humor, the ambiance was incredible, and my flute of Prosecco was the best palate cleanser.. although the kitchen was running just a tad bit behind, I myself am in the restaurant business and could not hold it to them, especially on a busy night.

Thank you to the Brasserie 8 1/2 team for my incredible experience and I cannot wait to come back and eat more amazing food!

We went on a valentines date and they exceeded our expectations. The food was great, the dinner menu was tailored to the occasion and the service was outstanding. Our waitress and staff was very attentive, but not overwhelming.

Nice place, very good food, good service. You're not going to get any bargains here, but then again you're not going to get any bargains in restaurants this close to Central Park and hedge fund land. Fine for business, better for date night.

Lunch was a lingering affair. The atmosphere was perfect and server was very attentive. We only ordered salads, but they were perfect and delicious. Coffee and water refills were timely.

The food was delicious, the service courteous and efficient and the three course prix fixe menu was good value for money at $42, considering that this is an up-market restaurant. I booked this for an early Valentine's Day celebration and my wife loved it (as indeed did I).

This is our favorite restaurant in New York: not trendy, always reliable, relaxed atmosphere and excellent food. Long may it thrive.

It's not as good as expected. I am actually disappointed that the so-called French cuisine is not that authentic. Worst restaurant-week choice ever.

I had a three course meal during the restaurant week and everything I tried was very tasty. I also loved the space: big staircase, high ceilings, great atmosphere. It's not noisy, so for once you can have a conversation and actually hear it. Service was also very good. I had a really nice experience there. Definitely will be back.

I chose this restaurant for a pre-concert dinner near Carnegie Hall. The space is very inviting, and widely spaced tables and low noise level add to its appeal. Fine, accommodating service. But the food (ordered from a Restaurant Week menu) was just OK--no notable flaws, but, except for an excellent lobster risotto, no pizazz either.

A pleasant dining experience with attentive service and good food. There is an elevator for handicap entry, but you must first enter the restaurant at street level and then request an operator from the restaurant which is below the street-entry level. Prices are a bit high, but the milieu is lovely and for shopping in the all of the better (Fifth & Madison Ave) NYC stores, the location is excellent.

We had the scallops and the branzino - both perfectly prepared with nice sides. The branzino was part of the Restaurant Week menu and also had the crab bisque and finished with the pear cake. Everything was delicious. Since it was Restaurant Week, the dining room was livelier than normal on a Friday evening, but service was excellent and the tables are spaced nicely so that you can have a pleasant conversation at the table. Prior to dining, we enjoyed a drink at the bar accompanied by a dozen oysters. They have an excellent happy hour. Always fun.

We went for restaurant week prior to seeing a show at Carnegie Hall. The restaurant has a corporate feel and service was a bit rushed (although it also remained mostly empty). The food was mixed. I had the salad to start which had a bitter mustard flavor with lots of mustard seeds. The duck was very good. To finish, I had the chocolate cake. It was disappointing with the alcohol infused cherries (too much). Overall, I wouldn't go back or recommend. 2 basics - salad and chocolate cake were not good (in my opinion).

For duck confit and foret noire, this place can't be beat. It's beautiful, service is superior, seating is comfortable and private, welcome is gracious, food is never less than good -- even if the cheese in the frisee/lardon salad seems a tad excessive. There's a discreet elevator if a sweeping stairway entrance is not for you. Brunch also recommended. Some recent reviews suggested a slip in quality, which, as longtime fans, we found simply inaccurate.

A wonderful find on 57th street. Fabulous ambiance and decor, very caring service, food not the best in nyc, but then not the priciest. Restaurant Week and a mid-town doc appt brought me to the brasserie. i will go back and take friends whenever the opportunity arises.

I was impressed by the quality of the food and service. I ordered the Beef Wellington and fois gras from the prefix while my date got the short ribs from the restaurant week menu. The waiter and staff were attentive and friendly. For the price, I thought it was totally reasonable. They also tracked me down after I forgot my credit card which was much appreciated. I will definitely go back.

Classy, but not pretentious - the food as well as the service (Sunday, dinner). Upscale casual, with very attentive service, fresh ingredients (we both ordered from the Restaurant Week menu - Lobster risotto, duck, pear dessert). There's actually space between the tables (not so common on Manhattan, perhaps less so in Midtown, it's pretty easy to hear your tablemates (even with a full restaurant), and it harkens back to a day (sometime in the 70s), and it works. We'll both plan on returning. Give it a try, it's fun and you'll be glad you did.

Delightful place to celebrate special occasions and gather with friends.
Sunday buffet brunch has ample selections and is nicely maintained.
Service is attentive, yet unobtrusive. The space accommodates a large crowd of diners, but seating is arranged for maximum comfort. And the acoustics allow for quiet conversation. That is much appreciated. This is now our go-to place for birthday celebrations and whenever our little group would like to get-together and catch up.

8 1/2 has been one of my favorite restaurants, if not my favorite. Saturday night's experience was not up to par. The food which has always been excellent was not! My fish was dry and tastless, my campanion's duck arrived cold, was sent back and returned a few minutes later slightly reheated (apparently microwaved), taken back again, redone after a 25 minute wait, etc... my dinner was by then cold, etc... desert was disappointing.
