Brasserie 8 1/2 Ratings and Reviews
My filet mignon, tender and flavorful, was grilled to "a point" perfection, and boasted a delicious sauce Bordelaise redolent of shallots sautéed in butter and finished in red wine. The salmon of my companion was cooked to moist perfection. While I did not think highly of the lobster risotto (which paled in comparison to the crab cake of a previous visit), the desserts, both chocolate confections, were outstanding. Taking advantage of your BYOB tradition on a Sunday, our dinner was accompanied by a Venetian [sic] pinot noir of which I have become a fan, and the entire experience passed muster under the criterion I applied in publishing restaurant reviews over 35 years in Connecticut and in Boston: "bon rapport prix-qualite" -- good relationship of price to quality.
We enjoyed a Friday night with family. Great fixed priced menu. Escargot appetizer and duck main were wonderful. Dessert is included. $42 WOW. One of the best deals in NY. Service was very friendly and no one tried to rush us.
Whether visiting the city and staying in mid town or a local it is a good deal
We love to meet our "out of town" friends and relatives here for delicious food, wonderful service and especially the comfortable ambiance which allows for quiet, uninterrupted conversation. (a rarity in New York City). This, our 8th visit, was as enjoyable as our first in every way.
Sunday brunch with a business colleague and his wife. Sat in a booth and service was attentive and on point. Endless mimosas was a nice touch even though the bubbly was slightly weak. Food selection was abundant and fresh. Lovely miniature desserts was a perfect ending. Nice setting which allowed for a good conversation. Very recommend for a nice leisurely sophisticated brunch place near 5th Avenue shopping.
We have been return diners at 81/2 for several years. We have always been pleased with the decor, the reserved, quiet ambience. The food is of high caliber in taste and presentation. The service is efficient, timely, but not overwhelming. We have never been disappointed.
Old-fashioned buffet Sunday brunch. Service was great and the traditional broad selection made for a great experience. Nothing here is outstanding in terms of the quality of the food; you shouldn't be at buffet brunch if that's what you're looking for. But for an inexhaustible supply of good food for both breakfast and lunch, this is the place to go.
We had a lovely family dinner with my parents, sister, our hubbies and my pre-teen foodie nephews visiting from Montreal. Excellent prix fixe, wine list, perfectly cooked duck and filet mignon, user-friendly staff and well-spaced tables so that groups could get a little boisterous without the noise level becoming intrusive. We shall return!
My boyfriend and I decided to dine on Thanksgiving rather than cook this year. Being that we live a couple blocks from the restaurant, we often walk by and admire the chandelier and grand staircase from the first level. After reading all the awesome reviews, we said "lets give this place a try". The food was simply delicious from their prefixed menu and the service was outstanding! The warm ambiance and amazing design aesthetics creates a more luxurious and romantic atmosphere.
Thanksgiving dinner at 8 1/2 was much better than expected. The menu offered several prix fix items to satisfy everyone in a dinner party. There was the delicious traditional turkey dinner, there were steaks, and there were options for fish. The sides were good, and so was the wine. I have no complaints to register.
Great service and wonderful food. We were just there for Thanksgiving dinner. Everything was delicious and portions generous in the spirit of a true feast. Our server was very cordial and accommodating to all requests. Great cocktails too ! Always a great time at 8 1/2.
I go here regularly because it's a beautiful space and it's quiet enough to have a conversation. there were times the service was too slow, but after complaining, the service has improved. the fixed price lunch is very good value. my last meal wasn't up to standard - undercooked steak - but I was too lazy to complain.
Excellent long attended restaurant in the heart of midtown. We have never had a off night of dining over the years. If anything, the service seems even better but that may be our imagination as we truly enjoy the ambience. It is difficult to order anything else besides the duck but over the years, we have done so. Try to avoid those times when the bar is jammed (just after work). One can always enjoy quiet conversation in the booths.
