I come here often because it is quiet and tables are well spaced to permit quiet conversation. The service is gracious and accommodating. The food is quite good, just short of being excellent. I love duck breast and received a huge portion but it was on the dry side and lacking in flavor. The hit of the evening was the octopus appetizer.
The bread is great!!! Our friend loved the duck.
Wonderful dinner experience in this restful and tasteful restaurant, outstanding service from Omar and great food overall. And still very good value. Highly recommended!
Absolutely one of the best restaurants in NYC. Fine ambience, quiet and well-decorated. Superb food and selection. Highly attentive and thoughtful staff.
Consistently good every time I have been here. The value is so good and the service is excellent.
A wonderful setting. Fit for a movie set. Outstanding food and service. Happy hour is a good place to begin.
Wonderful place for dinner with friends and quiet conversation. Excellent food and service. Our favorite place since it opened.
Excellent service and flexibility on making menu substitutions.
Sunday Brunch Buffet with great selection of salads, pastries, eggs, yogurts, meats and more. Go hungry to get your money’s worth! A treat. Would be nice if coffee was included in the price fixe.
Sunday brunch at Brasserie 8 1/2 is a wonderful experience in every way. The food is excellent and plentiful, the service is responsive, professional, and friendly, and the ambiance is relaxing and convivial. Our server, Steve, was terrific and he has taken care of us in the same way on prior visits. Dinner at Brasserie 8 1/2 is also excellent. It is just a great restaurant.
Good wait staff
Food a bit instutional
Like a cruise ship or airline
Too bad ..was really looking forward to experience
I have been here at least 5 times.. every single time has been FANTASTIC.. From the food to the wonderful service, I have always been satisfied. You can't beat the price for NYC. I highly recommend this restaurant for a romantic brunch date, or a family gathering. There is something for everyone! Secret tip, get a freshly made crepe, they have them by the omelettes, you just have to ask! I get a strawberry nutella one and its decedent!
While the room is elegant and artwork is wonderful, dining on a Saturday evening feels strange because there are few diners. So the experience is a bit disconcerting. Food is good to very good, service is good but could be more attentive especially considering staff to patron ratio. It needs some intimacy to make it comfortable for times when the restaurant is inactive. I hope there are times when a lot more customers are filling the space.
Always a wonderful experience in every way
The staff is so lovely and professional and it is a pleasure being there.
There's a new chef and new energy, which must be why our annual New Year's brunch was so very busy! Thanks to all for keeping this place so special for so long, no easy feat.
What a wonderful brunch!!
Todo Perfecto, buena atención, muy buena cena romántica.
I love to dine at this Gem of a restaurant. Wonderful spot to meet friends at. Everyone can hear each other. They never rush you out for a second seating.
Place was quite, good environment for couple dating. Or small company group dinner.Food was good enough as a $$$ restaurant.
We love this restaurant, there is a low key quality overall, no hype, and importantly with no music playing that makes communication difficult It has a spacious dining room setting conducive to talking, while one enjoys the excellent food, and with sensitive and effecient service.
The setting is visually stimulating with beautiful art surrounding the dining room., and relaxing lounge area>
Such a beautiful place and the staircase sets the scene perfectly. Where most other restaurants offer off the street entry, Brasserie 8 1/2 entry is quite dramatic.
A very spacious layout and the food is delicious with a varied menu. The service staff are attentive, courteous and genuine.
All in all, we felt it was the complete package and would highly recommend.
Wonderful service and great food. Will definitely come again.
Brunch buffet is perfect
Our second time and wonderful as usual! My only complaint was that the crab cake I had was not made from lump crab meat, just crab flakes, was dry ( had too many breadcrumbs) and tasteless! Tasted like a commercially made crab cake from a supermarket. Otherwise, I would have given the food 5 stars.
Been coming here for years. This time they did not offer to check our coats and told us to put them on the vacant seat at our banquet. Ordered a $15 glass of Bordeaux that was horrible. From now on we will ask to taste the wine first. Food was excellent and our waitress was wonderful.
This restaurant never disappoints. The seating is comfortable and the noise level civilized, plus the wonderful Leger stained glass. Hooray for even numbers and fractions !
Spending a day in new york
Crab cake, scallops and Mac and cheese were good.
Brussel sprouts with bacon were basically just mini boiled cabbages - no flavor
Lobster bisque was tasteless and watery.
It’s a wonderful venue, the servers were attentive and the food quite delicious!
I lived in France for nine months and am a quarter French, so I know good French food. This isn’t 100% authentic, but there was more care in preparing food in French tradition and manner than in other restaurants that I have been to in the city. The menu looked like a French Christmas menu, featuring the essentials: fois gras, oysters, buche du noel, and game. The presentation of each dish was not what I encountered in France, and the buche du Noel did remind me of the first one I had in a grocery store for 5 euros, but everything had the right flavors and it was a good value for decent French food in the city. It at least looked and tasted like French food, and the buche du Noel did take me back to when I was there because of the meringue mushroom which I appreciated and that was worth it. I would go back for sure, staff was very nice and good ambiance and service.
We went because this restaurant was open on Christmas Day. I ordered the lobster bisque which I really didn’t like very much. My husband had the crabcake which he enjoyed but said it wasn’t hot. I ordered the short ribs for my entrée and they were very good as were the Yukon Gold potatoes they came with. My husband ordered the Lamb entrée and thoroughly enjoyed it. I ordered the bread pudding which was a disappointment as my dessert and my husband loved the chocolate mousse cake. All in all a decent meal for those who can afford it. not sure we’d come back though. I must admit though the waiter was very nice.
Lovely family Christmas day meal in central NYC. Fantastic food. Also accommodated in perfect booth for kids (8 and 6).
Should never have returned. So disappointed, as last year was perfect for Christmas Day lunch. Service this year was poor, waited 45 minutes to order, when food arrived, it was lukewarm, even though it looked and tasted great. Mentioned this to Steve, who just repeated our words and walked away. Iterated our disappointment to Destiny, who was very understanding. This year felt so impersonal and a waste of time and money. Will look out for somewhere else for Christmas Lunch, if we decide to spend the season in New York again next year. Carol and David visiting from England.
Awesome! Everything was top notch.
We went for Christmas Lunch.
Food was pretty good - but not outstanding...
Service at the table and greeting at the door were both wonderful - greeting downstairs at the restaurant was perfunctory at best - and we were left for 15min before being offered an aperitif...
There are plenty of higher class places in NYC that offer a less snooty welcome.
We did the Christmas Eve Prix Fixe. The Crab Cakes were only so-so but the Short Ribs with whipped potatoes and carrots was fantastic! The desserts were also good and the service was phenomenal. Overall a lovely meal for Christmas Eve.
Good atmosphere, excellent and tasty food as well as a value for money prix fix menu for Christmas Eve
I had very bad experience recently with their thanksgiving dinner and Christmas Eve dinner even though I have had their much better food in other times.
