Brabo - Lorien Hotel & Spa Ratings and Reviews
We were very disappointed with this restaurant. We found the quality of the food mediocre and the value shameful. From the soup, the chicken entree, the minuscule scallop entree, the minuscule filet of beef entree, all were disappointing and practically invisible. Very disappointing.
I have had good meals here in the past, but this occasion was a disappointment. Nearly empty restaurant, yet every course from bread to dessert took very long. My halibut was overcooked and both our portions were very small. For the same price there are plenty of other options nearby.
The brunch food was not very good at all. We had the corn beef hash with poached eggs. The poached eggs were overcooked and not runny at all. The hash was oily and lacked flavor. We also had the French toast which didn’t taste like much. It was very bland and the bourbon molasses was way over powering. The $18 lamb burger was very dry and was nothing special. The only bright side was the pastry tray which tasted great but I’m not sure it was made at the restaurant. I believe it was produced by an outside pastry company who services the hotel and restaurant. Our servicer was not bad but it took a good 20-25 mins before we got served our entrees. Overall it was a very disappointing experience.
A three and a half hour long, NYE wait and meal...
Our 9:45 reservation didn’t afford us seats until 10:45. We ordered our 5 course meal selection as soon as our waiter arrived, but didn’t even get our second course and wine pairing until after the New Year. The service timing and delivery was so poor, we asked the waiter to delivery our final two courses at the same time, along with our check.
I’ve been here before with my wife, and we both loved it, but last night was so poorly executed (in addition to the missing food elements from our first course and extremely fatty NY strip), that we won’t ever return.
I made a reservation for the new year's Eve and I can say that unfortunately the experience was really disappointing. The 5 tasting special menu was not worth the price as the food did not come as we expected (as example, a soggy risotto, an overcooked halibut and a really plain cheesecake). The wine pairing menu was also disappointing with a poor selection of wines. We really expected more from this restaurant for the price and reviews. We tend to book restaurants when we travel and we really like to experiment different foods and places to eat. Unfortunately I would not recommend this restaurant by the experience we had.
My wife and I dined there on New Year's Eve. First I had to wait for the valet parking attendant to show up for about 10 minutes. Our reservation was for 7:30pm and the restaurant was already busy. We were seated at our two person table which was nicely set. The seats are comfortable. The champagne we ordered was excellent. The menu was a five course tasting menu. After we put our order in we waited a long time....say...30 minutes for the first course to come out. But the server brought the second course, not the first so we had to send that back. After a few more minutes we did get our first course. The other four followed at about 20-25 minute intervals. To me, the kitchen was a bit overloaded. My meal was satisfactory but my wife's steak was too well done in parts and difficult to eat. She mentioned this to our server and the restaurant was concerned, offering various solutions which we declined since my wife was fairly full anyway. Later our server gave us free after dinner wines to help compensate. The wines were excellent. The service was attentive and hospitable even though it appeared there wasn't enough staff, both inside the kitchen and outside, to properly handle all the guests.
The dining room was quite loud and a large party was sat next to my wife and I which detracted from our anniversary dinner experience. The restaurant could have easily sat us somewhere more quiet and definitely not next to a large party of 8-10. It was not a great experience for us - not sure if we would return.
There were 6 of us for dinner, one of whom is a vegetarian. After some discussion, we all decided to have the tasting menu with wine, if they could accommodate the veg. It was all handled perfectly. In fact the lamb substitute was a wonderful mushroom dish - mushrooms are her favorite! All the dishes were excellent, and service was exceptional and not intrusive. I would highly recommend Brabo. It’s close to King St. Metro; they have valet parking; and there is parking close by. We went on Dec. 30th, and they weren’t busy at all. It made the meal so relaxed and private. We’ll definitely be back! Thank you!
Menu was impressive but not everyone in our party was satisfied with their meal. Small portions and dry meat left half the table unsatisfied. Pair that with the fact that one of our colleagues asked for a glass of scotch that the bartender felt no need to mention costs $75/pour. Seriously? No thanks. Plenty of great spots to eat in Old Town. I was disappointed because we were really looking forward to trying Brabo.
We had a very nice meal at Brabo. Evereything was delicious, but my main dish which was Halibut and it was a little dry, and not very flavorful. Our waiter was excellet!! So pleasant, knowledgeable and attentive. He heard us say we were celebrating birthdays, and brought us an after dinner drink to celebrate. I would definitely be back!
Thanksgiving Day! Sure a holiday meal in a restaurant can be tricky.
We've dined often at Brabo and always enjoyed the food & service. Our visit on Thursday felt so assembly line. Hadn't finished our cocktail when dinner started with our soup presented. Fast & unspecial I'd say. Waiters, if you're bored with holiday service don't work. As a matter of fact our waiter called it a 'carry out' day!!!😪
Too bad, Brabo, just don't do holidays - a special day- if you can't make it special.
Once again this year (fourth in a row) we celebrated Thanksgiving at Brabo - our tradition! The drinks were creative (Holiday Mule and Winter Old Fashioned); the meal was delicious - great Turkey and trimmings on their prix fixe holiday menu. A particular standout was the Potato Puree. Outstanding service provided by our waiter, Nigel, very attentive and helpful with selections. It was fun to have last year's waiter, Dave, stop by to wish us Happy Thanksgiving. This is a friendly, warm spot for a meal on a special day. Highly recommended!
We visited Brabo twice Thanksgiving week. Our first time was at the bar which opens at 5:00. Great signature cocktails, Carleton our bartender was fantastic and the charcuterie board was a fantastic deal at $8.00 for happy hour. We had a great experience and looked forward to our Thanksgiving 3-course fixed price dinner for $70/person later in the week. It was a huge disappointment! We left the restaurant starving. The scallops were so-so. My New York strip was MAYBE 2 ounces sliced and full of fat with a teaspoon of spinach and 7 dime-sized slices of potato. The worst? Apple Spice Cake dessert. Our table could barely choke it down. It was dry and tasted like cardboard. Our server barely smiled, disappeared forever, didn't wait until I tasted the wine before serving it to everyone else. All this and an $800 check! I'm not giving up 100% on Brabo yet. Our bar experience was so nice, and we will try again, not on a holiday though. Another disappointment though for us here and we Old Town Alexandria residents will not be back!
The Thanksgiving menu was good - more variety would've been appreciated, especially given the price. Our waiter was average, not particularly attentive once the order was placed. The food was delivered more quickly than we would've preferred and the turkey entree was not as warm as it should have been. The scallop starter and the chocolate dessert were delicious! The greeters were enthusiastic and friendly and the restrained and sophisticated decor provides a calm and quiet backdrop to the meal.
We always love Brabo, and I really like their recently redone dining areas. I love the 3 different ways you can dine. At the bar, in the more casual dining room just off the bar, and the more formal dining room. Great idea. Food was lovely, and we really liked our server, Dave. Highly recommend the place to all.
