We had a wonderful experience at Brabo. The service is excellent and the food is exquisite. It’s perfect for special occasions too. Highly recommend.
Great service and ambiance! Delicious food. Will definitely dine here again.
We’ve been to Brabo Tasting Room before and have always enjoyed the experience. We always thought Brabo Brasserie was a step above. Boy, were we wrong! Maybe they were not prepared for the Restaurant Week crowd, but the service and timeliness of the food and drinks were very poor. It took us 40 minutes to get our drinks and bread! The portions were very small and cold. Had we had a great experience, we would have come back for their regular menu. Unfortunately, we will not be back.
We went here for restaurant week. The portions were very small so it was not a good value. The food was OK, but not enticing enough for us to return any time soon.
Dave the server was amazing: knowledgeable about the menus, beers and wines, friendly. Good pacing. Generous portions of well prepared, well presented, tasty dishes. The muscles were awesome as was an appetizer not even on the menu yet. Such a good experience that we returned the next day for happy hour. Again, generous portions of such tasty food from the discounted happy hour menu. The charcuterie was so good and plentiful that others at the bar commented on how much food there was on the plate and how good it smelled. Sam, Daniel and Rusty, the bar tenders, were both masters of their trades and smart and friendly as well.
Very limited menu and to make matters worse, they were out of hamburgers.
Everyone had a great time. The lamb chops, muscles, and cold fashion cocktails were especially good.
NOWHERE NEAR as good as previous visits. Restaurant quality should not be determined by the day of week (Saturday) and if the day is immediately post-holiday. Service was ok, not great, felt rushed, we were seated next to the kitchen, the private dining room (containing a group of around 20 people) and in the pathway to the restrooms - there was a constant parade of people walking past our table, yet our server went missing several times, glasses were empty, plates to be cleared, etc. Also - I was extremely disappointed the Chef's Tasting menu was not available -- on Saturday 1/5/19. For the nearly $600 I spent on dinner for 4 people, it was a crappy table, mediocre and condescending service and OK food. Thank you for curing me of my insatiable craving to eat a Brabo. Very disappointing, very embarrassing.
Service was marvelous. The food is always interesting and flavorful. A really good experience.
It was NYE so there was a 30 minute wait even with a reservation. Food was tasty but not worth the price. Service was ok; it was a busy night so I assume this was the primary reason for the delays. I probably would not return during a holiday. Doesn’t appear this restaurant can handle the volume. Would consider returning on a regular weekday. Overall good experience, but expected better.
I’ve eaten here 3 years in a row for New Year’s Eve and let me say there won’t be a 4th ! They are horrible now, with an incompetent staff that sells over-priced Outback Steak house level food . Too crowded they obviously overbooked and didn’t know what they were doing , but sure that is my fault and $400 dollars I will never get back . So sad... they were so good... and now ...the worse .
Fun atmosphere right off the main street through Old Town. Great food, fun cocktails, impressive bartenders, and warm staff overall! Will be back
NY Eve dinner. Fixed price 6 course meal. Service was poor for the price. Food was good but the poor service degraded the experience. We chose the wine flight; very good wines but no explanation
Brabo's is great on a random evening, especially for birthdays or anniversaries. But for New Year's Eve, they lost the bubble. We never got two of our courses in the prix-fix menu. They reduced my bill considerable, but my wife and had reserved this evening partly because of the lobster course which never made it to our table. So for special events, I'd steer clear of Brabo's.
We have eaten at Brabo at least 4 times mostly for New Years Eve. This used to be the best restaurant in Old Town after restaurant Eve closed. We were extremely disappointed on this visit. The food was mediocre we could have cooked it ourselves at home. The Fois Gras was served with a piece of cake that completely overwhelmed the Fois Gras. The Lobster was served with a sauce that was far too sweet in fact it was disgusting I couldn't eat it. The Service was appalling my husband ordered the flight of wines, some of the wines were brought after the food had been eaten. It was a complete shambles. No chef or head waiter came to ask us how our meal was they simply did not care. We watched trash cans being wheeled through the restaurant. The noise level was terrible. We were the only table in the entire restaurant with a table cloth, they simply couldn't be bothered to replace the others. We felt like we were in a different restaurant. I suggest both the chef and the manager need to be replaced. We will never go again it was a complete wast of $400.
New Year’s Eve! Second year in a row. The 6 course menu sounded a little “out there” but boy was I mistaken. This chef knows what he is doing. Delicious! Amazing was the wine pairing offered at only $50 person. My husband is a wine collector, had really never heard of these wines and did not have high hopes. Once again, boy were we wrong! SPOT ON delicious pairings that matched each course beautifully. Fancy, yet relaxed at the same time. Best part was our server- David. Surprise, he was our server our previous New Year’s Eve. HE made the evening complete with personal and excellent service. A Happy New Year indeed, thank you Brabo.
The service was pretty good considering it was a busy New Year's Eve, but the kitchen just couldn't keep up. It was a pricey prix fixe menu with wine pairings and we were without a dish for long stretches of time. The 2nd course quail was greasy and surrounded by a sauce that would have been tasty had it been warm. We've had more acceptable meals at this restaurant in the past, but won't rush back. And we definitely won't sign up for a special holiday dinner again.
We were staying at the attached hotel with our toddler and remembered how great the mussels were on our last visit. It doesn’t look very kid friendly but they are so accommodating — offering high chairs, crayons, and a kids’ menu. The mussels were fantastic, as was the warm sourdough bread and butter. The pan-seared sea bass should have had a nice, crispy edge but appeared to have been sitting awhile and lost its crunch. And that day’s special — pumpkin risotto with a red wine reduction and seared scallops — was a little disappointing. The scallops were very nice but the risotto lacked flavor and was overwhelmed by the red wine. The service was also pretty slow. BUT if you’re looking for a place that’s great with kids and solid on mussels mariniere, this is a great choice.
We had the prix fixe xmas eve dinner, 3 course-dinner for $65/person. The main course offered a choice of 6oz tenderloin or roasted halibut. 4 of us had the halibut and I can tell you that I am being generous when I say it was 3oz of halibut??????!!!!!! I understand multi-course specials offer smaller portions but honestly, this was an appetizer, main and dessert so I do think the portion of halibut was way too small, especially at $65 per person.
Although it was yummy, my husband was absolutely disgusted and felt ripped off. I paid the bill, but honestly, even though everything was yummy, I think the portion of halibut was like they had run out of halibut in the kitchen so they were stretching it to make it last until 9pm xmas eve!
Will not be going back but highly recommend that when they offer a prix fixe menu at $65/person that they advise that the portion of the main entree is minuscule!
Not a bad place but frankly everything I was served I could have made better at home. The servings were small, the prep was uninspired and of course the prices were high. I understand it's a for-profit business but please at this price point spend a little money for better ingredients and don't send the chocolate mousse out frozen. The tenderloin shouldn't be hard to cut with a knife. That alone makes me wonder what cut it really was.
Vacation in Alexandria VA
it took over 2 hours to get our entree
At first I was a bit put off by the elaborate decor and stuffy feel. I always thought brabo was more cozy for friends to gather for a meal. Although I loved the decor it just seemed stiff. However the service and the food was great. By the end of the meal we were more relaxed and felt more at ease to have conversations louder than a whisper. I will say this was the best brunch I’ve had on Alexandria so far!
This was not a great experience for many reasons. The main reason being that our food took forever and once it arrived it was very over cooked and not seasoned properly either. My boyfriend was too hungry to wait for something else to be made and asked for salt to make it somewhat edible. I didn’t want anything to be brought out but they brought out the sea bass that wasn’t really great either. We should have never been charged for food that wasn’t acceptable and would’ve been nice to have a manager acknowledge the experience being unacceptable but that didn’t happen. It’s unfortunate and have had great experiences here in that past but won’t be returning after this.
The selections, food, bar menu everything was fantastic. Everything I’ve come to expect and the reason I keep coming back. I think this must be my 15th or 20th visit to Brabo. My only critique would be our waitress, she was knowledgeable & friendly and still knew my name at the end of the meal (which I gave at the middle of the evening to fulfill my drink order since the bartender knew what he had made me).
My issue was that she made a lot of assumptions. She assumed the person I was dinning with and I were married, even though we were clearly dressed completely different -him very casual, myself to the nines. When I ordered the tasting menu, she assumed my company also wanted it and almost left without taking his order. She even assumed my drink was ginger beer until I corrected her. Not a good trait in anyone to assume and not check-in on those before proceeding.
Food was fantastic across the board, from appetizers to desserts. The service was VERY slow (very friendly, just took forever for the drinks and dishes to arrive). We arrived at 6:20 and left at 9:00
I love coming here for date night or a night out with friends. The cocktails are delicious and they are very conscientious about celiacs. They cook in separate pans and are very knowledgeable about what is in their dishes.
I emailed the restaurant beforehand regarding gluten free options. Everyone at the restaurant including Chef Sebastien went above and beyond my expectations. The dinner, drinks, and dessert were all excellent. We had Le Grande Duck Flambé for two which requires 24 hours notice via the website but it is worth the effort. The location was also a highlight as we were able to enjoy a walk to the Waterfront and to the Christmas tree in Market Square before dinner.
We enjoyed a very tasty and leisurely meal with friendly service and the tail end of happy hour wine selections.
Too salty to eat. Took a bite and nearly puked. Complained to waitress. One of my guests had the same experience. Manager never came by. Chef never came by. That tells me they know they have a problem and don’t care. Robert Wiedeman has not been by thus restaurant to eat in a very long time. Too many good restaurants in Alexandria, don’t waste your time or money here.
Normally, my experience at Brabo is amazing. So I would recommend based on this had to be a fluke night. Server never introduced himself by name; when we went to order he told us they were out of the chef special, and the sea bass. We were surprised and made mention, to which he looked at his watch and said, "well that is what happens when you come late." It was 7:30 pm A member of my party indicated they would like to order a veggie plate and asked what kind of potato options were available, he said french fries. Any sides that were paired with a protein were not available as a regular side. She asked him to check with the chef, he said he knew the chef would say no. She persisted and he reluctantly did and came back shaking his head no.
When our food came, the two of us that ordered medium filet mignon, when we cut the meat, one was rare and the other more on the well side. For the person who ordered the veggie plate, her carrots, which were supposed to be roasted were either very hard or too soft, no middle.
For the delay in food, they gave us a cheese plate to tied us over until our food was replaced, which was a nice gesture.
As i stated at the beginning, this is an anomaly. I have never had a bad experience with this restaurant in the past and will continue to visit.
Visiting Alexandria I was looking forward to my dinner at Brabo. Really nice space, nice reception. Took 25 minutes to get bread, in an almost empty restaurant? Just seconds before my appetizer. Was reticent about the prunes in the foie gras but it was very nice. The delicious but sweet cake served with it would be better saved for a dessert with a caramel sauce and a little of their delicious homemade ice cream, not with foie gras. The monkfish was nice but a bit over cooked. The ingredients great, the fried kale yummy; the sauce incredibly salty.
Service could have been a bit more attentive (I’m thinking it was my particular server,) food could use a bit more attention.
Over all, nice space and menu; do expect a bit more for my $120 dinner for one. Definitely worth another try next time in town.
Never had a bad meal here, however the creativity of the Monkfish dish set the bar higher.
Took family and parents here while visiting Washington DC. Restaurant decor is stylish. Bar looked great, I wish we had made time to sit there for a pre-dinner drink. The food and service were really good, no complaints. I understand the town and location (part of hotel) are going to result in higher prices but we still felt it was a little expensive. However, we'd still recommend for a special occasion.
The waitress was very attentive and accommodating. She made good suggestions, was very knowledgeable and experienced with the food items and cocktails, even offering to have the chef and bartender make substitutions and create items not on the menu.
Thanksgiving menu was excellent and exceeded my expectations. Great family style dining when it’s just the two of us. Even went home with leftovers.
We have dined twice at this hotel, once in the casual bistro and once in the formal dining room. The staff is first rate, very sophisticated and not overbearing in their service. They are good but not trying to demonstrate their pretentiousness. A refreshing change.
Brett, the sommelier and bar manager, is knowledgeable and low key. Nikki sweet and efficient.
Visited with my hard of hearing father who lives in Alexandria (we are from NYC area) and they quickly moved us to another more quiet table.
Our Thanksgiving dinner was just delightful. Our group of Eight has already decided we’re going there again next year too. We loved the family style service.
It was pretty busy. The food was less than hot. There was a lack of seasoning. The stuffing was burnt.
However, the staff were kind and did their best as it was a very busy holiday. The food was just not great. I've eaten here before and had a completely different experience.
Very disappointing. Staff courteous, meal overpriced, poor quality and served cold. This WAS a good restaurant.
