We enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner at Box Hill. Kudos to the entire staff who worked so hard to make our experience memorable. Our family is looking forward to celebrating together at Box Hill next year.
Thanksgiving dinner out - and what a treat!!
All four of us really enjoyed our meals from start to finish. Our server couldn't have been any nicer or more attentive. The mansion is beautiful and we are going back again next weekend!
Although the manager did compensate us fairly for our dissatisfaction, I am leaving this write-up to bring attention to areas that I feel warrant consideration. Firstly we had a 6 PM reservation and upon sitting down in the Pub area which we chose since they had live music that evening. Special note the country western guitarist was excellent and highlight of the evening. Upon being waited we ordered a bottle of wine one of the few more reasonably priced. It was excellent but still overpriced per dinning experiences throughout York, Lancaster and Baltimore area. We then ordered the filet and were told they had non and were all out - what a disappointment - our 2nd choices were the chicken and scallops accompanied by the butternut squash bisque and Caeser salad (both of these were excellent) As for the entrees no so much - risotto was hard gummy and didn't eat it; fingerling potatoes were raw and for the price paid disappointing. Suggestions adjust your wine list to be more reasonable should have a few selections in the low $30 range both white and red. Definitely have plenty of filets or comparable substitute; and triple check the veg, rice and potatoes. Lastly given the Pub has less atmosphere than restaurant put the fire place on and perhaps have a discount on menu items if possible. Final note their desserts are wonderful!!!
This was hands down the worst dining experience I’ve had in quite some time. We made a reservation thinking we were going to dine upstairs in the quaint mansion dining area. Instead, they put us downstairs in the pub which was extremely noisy even with only maybe 5 people down there. The bartender was our server. He was a nice guy, but service was slow as he had to service the other guests and make drinks for the entire restaurant. They didn’t have the fixings for even standard liquor drinks. We ordered the maple, bourbon bacon brussel sprouts for our appetizer. There was no maple, barely any bacon and they were boiled. Nothing is more disgusting than boiled brussel sprouts. We ordered the scallops and lamb for dinner. The scallops came out cold and it was a fennel salad. Literally. If you like fennel you’ll love this dish but it did not come out as described. The lamb was supposed to be a tenderloin with a carrot and tomato chutney of sorts and pearl couscous. I asked for it medium rare. When the dish came out it was like a ragu. The lamb tasted like it was made in the crockpot, there we no carrots and the dish was so bland not even salt and pepper could save it. Also, it was not medium rare since it was stewing in the crockpot all day. It was edible, but it tasted like nursing home or hospital food. And, they were charging $30+ a dish. It was the most expensive and disappointing check I’ve ever had to pay. The bartender said he could take things off the check. I was in the service industry for 10 years and I didn’t want a comped check and I know businesses are struggling with limited staff right now. I paid it, said how underwhelmed we were and that we would never be back. And trust me, you couldn’t pay me to go back. Note to Box Hill- if you’re going to market yourself as an upscale restaurant and charge upscale prices make sure the product value is there. Also, hire a new chef.
The appetizers were amazing! Food was vey good. Excellent wine list selection. Service was perfection. View at sunset was enchanting. Highly recommend for a date night.
All four of us felt the food was terrific! Our server was friendly and very attentive. We were all very pleased with our evening .Will definitely return soon.
It’s a nice place. The food is mediocre at best though. The lamb meal was okay, the tuna meal was a big chunk of tuna and that’s it, pretty bland. Brie appetizer was gross
Very enjoyable dinner.
Food was not good. One meal was cold, lamb was tough and steak too salty. Menu was small. Never brought some of the food. They cannot decide what they want to be, either fine dining or casual dining. Server was inexperienced. Not impressed with the experience and will not be returning.
Beautiful surroundings in the glass sun room.
The Ceasar salad was perfect with the white anchovies. The Beet salad is awesome.
The tuna was seared perfect with fingerling potatoes .
You must have the pear/ cherry strudel. Yummy!

While we were there, the internet went down that created a problem with payment processing. The waitress was fantastic, however there was another customer that was rude to another waitress because of the delay.
The restaurant was beautiful and the staff was very friendly. The food was really good and the peanut butter mousse bomb was outstanding!
food and ambiance was very goo d! service was jsut a short staffed situation! the waitstaff tried very hard.. and were good people ...but,, they were just short staffed!
I thought the food was good, service was good and the ambiance is very nice. The only reason it didn’t get higher stars is that we waited a while to get our drinks, the salads came just on time, but then our meals came before we finished our salads. Also, the one thing I was really looking forward to eating (escargot) never came out. I mentioned it to the waitress snd she said “sorry, I’ll take it off your bill.” That was the most disappointing thing of all.
Everything was perfect except for no blue cheese olives for my martini. The best restaurants have always volunteered to make them for me.
We left before even ordering. This place is great I am sure for events such as weddings etc but as a restaurant they are poor. The reservations were not acknowledged and they stuck us in a dark room as a favor being aware of “our” shortcomings as reference to not having reservations although it was booked here on Open Table and we also called and confirmed.
There was a food menu that the waitress started with and said “let me know I what you want on this as not everything is available.” To that, there were 3 appetizers and 3 so called entrees. We asked for a different table since we were the only customers there to which they said no as we had already been seated. We asked for a drink menu and wine list of which they said we don’t have one that is correct.
From that point, we quickly decided it was all going the wrong way and if we were going to pay $80-$100 per plate that it wouldn’t be here so we left. The manager merely commented to encore our evening as we left. That is why this review; they just don’t care. It is one thing to have challenges but another when the staff could care whether they serve you or not.
But bad things can become good as we found a new awesome dinner spot that was outstanding!!! Revival Social Club in York is among the top places in our opinion. Fantastic service with awesome food! We spent half the money and was amazed by the service and the level of quality.
The atmosphere is awesome here and it has a classy vibe. Service was fairly slow, and the food was ok.
Their wine events are typically good, but this BBQ/Wine event fell FAR SHORT.
The wines were excellent though. However, the meat for the 3rd course was uneatable.
Worst of all, the cocktail for the dessert was supposed to be Iced Coffee w Frangelica ... but they left out all the Frangelica. Since no one at our table was a fan of iced coffee, we initially though it was just BAD. Then we recreated it at home WITH just a 1/2 shot of Frangelica and it was good. They screwed up.
In general ... the Food Manager falls short versus the previous Food Manager they let go to try to save a few pennies during the pandemic.
We all agreed that we were a bit disappointed for several reasons but there were also pluses. The atmosphere was very pleasant. We were able to hold a conversation among ourselves. Table was set very elegantly with bread plates with butter knives. One Live flower stem would have been better than silk. However, we never touched the bread plates. We actually asked the waitress what these plates were....yes, we knew. But since we didn't use them, we thought maybe the waitress didn't know what they were for. She informed us that they ran out of bread. This was a Saturday evening at 7 in the prime of the dinner hour. No bread? So the plates remained a table decoration. One in our foursome ordered the Drunken chicken. When it came out there was a leg bone protruding. Turns out it was a chicken leg and thigh. No fuss was made and he ate it. But in discussing, he indicated that he ordered it because it specifically stated it was a chicken breast. The crab cake was noted to be very delicious. The meatball dish was described as the meatballs were dry but the rest of the dish was very good. I had the Duck. I prefer my duck to be crispy on the outside. I suppose I could have requested that. The temperature of the dish was only warm which was my first impression. The Baby carrots were excellent. Desserts: Two of us had the lemon bundt cake which was described as topped with a mountain of berries and this cream sauce. MOUNTAIN means more than 2 raspberries and 4 blueberries. The sauce was only in the center of the bundt and amounted to 2 teaspoons for the entire bundt cake. Disappointing. The bread pudding was excellent as noted by my husband. I tasted that and agree. The Fruitini was also noted as very good. I generally do not review a restaurant unless I can give an excellent review. However I kept receiving requests to review Box Hill. I just think there are improvements that could be made. It is a lovely mansion..no doubt about it. Would I recommend? It would be a YES, BUT
This was the first time dining at Box Hill Mansion. It is my new favorite restaurant. The ambience was wonderful, as well as the food. The service was very good, but my wife thought our waitress could have been a little more attentive. We were seated in a library room which was absolutely beautiful, very warm and relaxing. We were right next to the main foyer with its staircase and chandelier, where the musician was seated. He was an excellent vocalist and actually was close enough to take some requests from us. The entire setting and grounds of the mansion is beautiful. I dined on their special which was a rockfish stuffed with crab meat served on a clam chowder and fingerling potatoes. Absolutely delicious. All four in our party loved the Box Hill Mansion and can't wait to return.

Should have been there earlier so we could have sat on the porch to watch the sun set. Box hill is a wonderful restaurant to enjoy dinner in one of the many rooms in the mansion. The meal was absolutely enjoyable an the Ambience is well worth it. We will definitely be having dinner again there.

We had a wonderful dinner at Box Hill. The food was amazing and our server was very friendly, even on such a busy night (Valentine's Day weekend). The atmosphere was just right - casual, lively and fun. The mansion is beautiful. The Pub downstairs is very relaxed and a good place to watch sports on tv or listen to great music. We will be returning again this weekend!
Food was very good and the Mansion is beautiful. The atmosphere was good and very appropriate for Valentines Day weekend. Our reservations were for 6:30, however, and though we were seated right on time, we were still in our seats at 930pm. We were approached several times and asked if we ordered this dish or that, which meant they had prepared food and they weren't sure what table it belonged to. For this to happen once in a visit is one thing, but three to four times is another story. There was a 45 minute space between courses where I think they forgot us. we finally caught someone's attention and then were returned to a reasonable time period between courses. we would go here again, but this was not their best night for customer service.
I went on a Thursday night with 8 family members. We were in our own room. Everyone was very impressed with the all the courses, drinks, service and the price. I believe it is a hidden gem. My wife and I enjoyed it so much we went back the next day for Valentines dinner.
The food was great and our server Tiffany was amazing! We enjoyed our dining experience and will be returning in the future.

Found the place very interesting and beautiful. Food was okay, the chef’s special was already done when the waitress came back to take our order. My companion described the food was overcooked and to much pepper in the pasta. I asked for salmon and got duck. Quietly confused our server. We had one of the owners coming to our table, a very polite lady, she gives us reasons and ask for feedback. Dessert was absolutely delicious.
Box Hill is a beautiful historic mansion that is very large so we felt very safe and separated from the other customers. The food was outstanding. Our server was very attentive, always with a smile (I could tell even though she was wearing a mask). The entertainment was a talented man on a guitar, singing a wide range of popular songs. Extensive wine list. It was a great night and for a moment the world felt "normal" again! Will return this weekend.
After 45 minutes waiting for a drink, we finally left. We didn’t even get to order. Went there for Valentines Day and heard several other couple comment about the poor service as we left. Very frustrating night as it was too late to get in any other places. Will never return.
We decided to go there for Valentine’s Day. They had a fixed price menu at $60 per person with several choices for each course. The building is beautiful. We were seated in what would have been the dining room and noticed there are several rooms of seating on the first level. The building was beautifully decorated and we had high hopes for a great evening.
We received water immediately after being seated and the bread came out a few minutes later. It was 15 minutes before our server stopped by. She took our drink order and then it was another 8 minutes before she came back to take our food order. Steve’s soup and my salad came quickly but we then waited a while for the appetizer course. We didn’t receive our drinks until just before the appetizers arrived and the manager who brought them wandered around a bit before finally deciding they were supposed to come to our table. We couldn’t tell how full the other rooms were but only half the tables in our space were occupied. As we waited for our entre, one couple got up and left, then, as we were eating, another couple gave up and left, having not been waited on at all. Several times I noticed servers walking around with plates of food trying to figure out what table to take them to.
Our food was just ok. Chicken Saltimboca should be made with cutlets, not a whole chicken breast. The meat was dry. I estimate that my food would total $45 - 50 on a regular menu. Certainly not $60. To make it worse, they put a 20% gratuity on the check. I guess they figured that was the only way to get a tip. We were there for over two hours and as we left, another couple was also leaving, feeling thoroughly disgusted by the experience. We compared notes and agreed we would not be back.
This was the worst restaurant experience ever. When we arrived thete was a long line at the hostess desk. There seemed to be a problem with nearly everone's reservation. Despite the limited Valentine's Day menu, we were repeatedly brought food for the other 4 tables in our area, to include being served salads after we'd finished out entrees. After finishing our entrees and the dishes being cleared, other that being brought other's food, we were ignored for at least 40 minutes. We were then brought a check despite not having received our desserts. When the desserts were finally served, we were given no flatware. I had a teaspoon that was given to me with my iced tea (?), and my husband ate his with his hands. The check then arrived again, and unbelievably included a mandatory gratuity. I guess that's what you have to do when your service is so poor. And no, it was particularly crowded (many open tables).
