The table and interior are wonderful
The staff are friendly .
The main course took along time to arrive . The waiter said the kitchen were running behind .
The starters were superb . gazpacho , octopus .
The express cod and pea aioli were quite good , but the asparagus risotto disappointing.
But overall we enjoyed ourselves and you have a lovely restaurant.
awful, terrible service, terrible food, never again, very overpriced
Beautiful courtyard, perfect for summer lunches!
Good food, but a bit pricey. Service was friendly but our second courses took too long to arrive.
I'd been once to Boulestin before and was bowled over by not just the food but the impeccable service - attentive without ever being intrusive, which so few people get right. I really wanted to bring the family so we booked for a birthday celebration.
It was the hottest day of the year and their computers were down. They thoughtfully rang in advance to let me know they could only accept cash because of this.
We had a table in the pretty courtyard and the overall atmosphere was very relaxed. But our waitress was either new and very badly trained or just not very good. She didn't tell us several items were not available which meant we had to rethink quickly. We had to chase her to order drinks, then food, then desserts (again, not told certain items were unavailable until we'd ordered.) Then had to chase again for the bill and again for them to actually take the money and bring our change so we could leave. She could walk past a table half a dozen times and not make eye contact. Other staff laid and cleared tables (it wasn't busy) without first checking whether customers needed serving. This was the opposite of what I'd experienced before.
The food was OK. I ordered teriyaki salmon with black rice and edamame. The salmon was beautifully charred but the rice and beans tasted as if they had just been poached in water - no range or delicacy of flavour. Just bland. The kind of thing I'd cook on a busy school night if I couldn't be bothered to think of how to prepare them in a more interesting way.
Their signature madeleines which last time I came were fresh from the oven and truly unbeatable were cold in places hot in others, suggesting they had been microwaved from frozen (maybe they hadn't been but that was the effect.)
Overall, it was laid back and pleasant enough but after my first visit I raved about it and now I'd not bother to race back there.
This is one of the best kept secrets in London. It is a beautiful little bistro with perfect ambiance and the most charming patio I have ever seen! The food is delicious and wait staff was friendly, especially "Kiby" I believe his name was. Go here, it is so charming, you will not regret it.
Ok meal in the evening. Service was good but for that price which was ok i think you can find better value for money at other restaurants. Food was rather bland but not offensive
My wife and I had a memorable meal 30 years ago in the Boulestin in Covent Garden (closed long ago). To celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary we lunched for the first time at the Boulestin in St James's. I had eggs benedict and she had eggs royale. All 4 poached eggs were hard. We decided to leave after the first course. The restaurant manager did not seem particularly bothered by our complaint despite the fact that she knew the eggs should be runny.
It's a beautiful location, with a classic feel and a intimate courtyard. Great swathes of plastic flowers do not compliment it well.
I had booked what I thought was lunch - but turned out they only do brunch - which is not the same menu - that could have been my mistake - it's possible!
The service was polite, but very slow, with long gaps between everything, with even an Americano coffee (being the drinks order at the beginning) taking ca 15 minutes (which was odd, as it was not busy). The food was pleasant, but portions were small - especially the soup and accompanying crostini. This was all the more note-worthy given the prices - including £5 for the cup of Americano coffee, which is not steep, it's daft (and as coffees were not on the menu, the first we knew of that was when it appeared on the bill). There is also a cover charge, which is not how most UK restaurants operate (covering what? rolls which they even stated they bought in, so couldn't guarantee were nut-free?) and an optional service charge of 13.5% - like alcohol content in wines, it seems opt serv ch %s are just on the up...
Sadly, therefore, despite the website implying a beautiful venue with an interesting a la carte menu, the actual result is different.
Had business breakfast at Boulestin - food is always good quality and fresh. Service is friendly and prompt. Would recommend for breakfast.
Sublime menu, food beautifully presented and delicious, a great evening!
It was my birthday and the staff noted this subtly and were even more charming, helpful, and courteous than ever we will be back very soon.
An Undiscovered Gem
How many times have you wished for a restaurant with excellent food, attentive service and a romantic, peaceful ambiance? Boulestin is that place. Perfect for first dates, anniversaries, and/or catching up with old friends over plates of fine French food.
Excellent Valentines meal. Food was perfect and nice romantic atmosphere. Service was good although maybe a little slow. We would happily go there again
Not impressed. Slovenly attired front of house. Fraying carpet downstairs. Head waiter with his hands in his pockets. Waitress with literally no English at all. Very noisy and poor atmosphere. Unsatisfactory sommelier. All of these things letting down quite good food. I do not recommend this place to anyone.
Overall enjoyable ; starters (such as duck egg with almost non existent “crackling”)were a little disappointing, but main courses and dessert were fine. Lovely place, but a little empty on a week night. Wine list is good value.
Expensive, especially when they add a £6 cover charge per person and 13.5% service. Didn't want artichoke soup, was told there was watercress soup so chose that but got artichoke and even after I complained they just brought it back. We asked for 2 coffees and one tea and got 3 coffees so either they didn't have good enough english or weren't listening.
Nice lobster papardelle though.
This was my 3rd visit to Boulestin, I like the atmosphere of the place the terrace in the summer is lovely, the food is good and the staff attentive. The only negative was that our foodd obviously stood under the hot lights for a while which spoilt the presentation a little but I am happy to say not the taste a lovely meal as usual. Many thanks
Amazing French meal on St. James. Fantastic service (as for Joseph!) and the food is divine. Highly recommend.
The pan fried Prawns let them down as they were overcooked
Excellent food, great service. It is expensive and was a little bit quiet for a Sunday breakfast.
I had hoped for more. It was Saturday evening, but no problem booking any timed table just 48 hours prior. Not itself a good sign, though it helped me. When we arrived, there was a very elderly couple arguing loudly. The management dealt with it well, though police were called at one point. I had signalled on the booking form that it was a birthday, and I asked for a small polite cake. Nothing happened. the food overall was good, but not especially fine, which for those prices, it should be.
Lovely food. Sporadic service - had to ask 3 times for a drink to be served. Overall would still return as menu and food was excellent.
A great French restaurant. A nice stylish room, with a good menu with interesting touches. Always a pleasure.
Participants were very happy with food and service
Lovely ambiance, great food and friendly service. The staff were attentive but we were never rushed. Definitely recommend.
Enjoyed a lovely breakfast, albeit that it was a business one! :-)
This favourite of mine is now on 110% top form. Changing menu, innovative flavours - The "Doux de Cevennes" - which was brought onto the menu on the day I lunched - is a triumph, not least because of the care taken to add sharp flavour to the garnish, especially the lightly caramelized spring onions.
Nothing was "fussy", presentation was catchy, but unpretentious and the service was exceptional.
A pleasant quiet restaurant close to some very busy sites. Good food and helpful service.
Boulestin is a favourite lunch venue for me. The food, service and ambience are always exceptional. In the summer the courtyard is delightful
Always dine at Boulestin when in London. Ambience, food and staff are all superb!
Great outside seating. Service not so great, maybe due to mid afternoon timing (not enough servers; shift change?)
Unfortunately, food not so great either. Potatoes were obviously reheated and hardened, although the bread was outstanding!
Found this restaurant via Instagram and having visited Berry Bros & Rudd next door. Truly blown away by the superb food, ecstatic that I managed to get a courtyard table in the very pretty and historic rear square, and the weather was kind, but loved the general ambience and excellent service and attentive and gracious staff. I consider it a great find and gem of the St James area of London. Can well recommend for special occassion or a friends get-together! Loved it
REcommended by a friend - lovely place with nice listing of dishes and nice wines by the glass and bottle. For us that is where it ends. The escargot hadn’t seen garlic or any other spice - the vegetarian dish was blah - the wines were good the bill reflected what they offer but not what we received. Maybe it was a bad night
Fantastic food and superb service would definitely recommend
Excellent food in elegant surroundings. Attentive, friendly service.
We ventured forth to a new venue for us, and were delighted with what we found. Efficient, non-obtrusive service was matched by the food. We both said we would return. If we were to find fault it was the salt on the side of chips, and the rather high prices on their wine list! The good ambience, especially on a very hot evening, (we ate in the shaded square at the back, but the main restaurant was air-conditioned) , and the way we were treated from start to finish more than compensated !
always a solid experience
Sad they now have a different vendor for their black pudding - the new one is nowhere near as tasty. :-(
Superb food. Lovely service. Not too noisy. Very expensive considering other diners were in cycling gear.
Pretty restaurant with a hidden courtyard and an excellent service but food was awful. We could not finish any of our dishes and both got sick after the meal. The restaurant was almost empty on a Friday evening which should have raised our concerns.
