Boulder ChopHouse & Tavern Ratings and Reviews
Just a little chaotic in the bar, but it is Halloween weekend in Boulder and the adults were celebrating. Food and service were very good as has been the case with prior visits. The Chop House will always be on my list of places to stop when visiting Boulder.
Food was great. Hostess was extremely rude. Put us in back room by ourselves in worst table in the restaurant, despite that we had reservations and it was a special occasion with 2 out of town guests. Husband also had back surgery and couldn't sit comfortably in he wooden chair. Waitress refused to move us after 2 requests. Unbelievably rude and inconsiderate. Finally a sympathetic waiter took it upon himself get us moved. From there, food was great and service was good.
We've been to noteable restaurants like this all over the country. For the price of a 6 oz filet or a 14 oz sirloin it was good but not anything that special. So many other great restaurants to try in Boulder. In our opinion it was overrated and overpriced.
Our food was very tasty. Cornbread and the calamari appetizer were delicious. However, our server was inattentive and especially slow in bringing after-dinner coffee and glasses of port. Then we had to wait a while for our check. Although it was a Saturday night and relatively busy, we noticed our server chatting at the bar with co-workers while we waited for the coffee. Supporting staff who bussed our table and helped deliver the main courses were excellent; it was our main server who was inattentive.
Food was average. Have had much better steak elsewhere. Fish was dried out. Asked for a wine recommendation. Thought they were being overly nice when the server brought 3 samples until the bill came and saw that I was charged for each sample. And only 1 of the samples came close to what I wanted. Did order a large glass of that wine.
What a massive disappointment! Can only think that other reviewers went to a different restaurant. Should have smelled trouble when the server opened with "we are known as a brewery". Restaurant is an embarrassment. The only winner is the company with the salt concession. French onion soup was so salty it was inedible. Complained to the server who's only response was "oh?". Obviously I was at fault, not the chef. New York strip was so tough and stringy I could hardly eat it. Ordered the Dianne sauce and had to scrape it off. Again WAY too salty. The chef's special steak was equally unappetizing. The Gorgonzola treatment was equally inedible. If you are a starving student maybe it's ok, but anyone with tastebuds should stay away.
Wife's BD. Service was ok, but not exceptional. Waiter really didn't seem to care too much. My wife ordered the filet special well done. Came back medium. I ordered the New York Medium rare to rare. Came back Medium to Medium rare. My son ordered the bone in rib eye medium rare. It came back rare. For the amount of money we spent overall ($240) it was certainly not worth it. Won't be going back anytime soon. Chop house could have certainly done a much better job all the way around.
We were visiting the area and wanted to find a nice steak house. This place didn't disappoint. Our server was fantastic. She was excellent with the wine list and worked until she found a wine the ladies enjoyed. The tots with pesto and balsamic were crazy good. Our cuts of meat were healthy and cooked as ordered. Would return when in the area again.
We wanted a steak dinner and we're not disappointed. I only wish they offered a smaller portion ribeye steak. I don't prefer fillet but a 19 oz. steak is way too large when you visit from out of town. Their cornbread was a nice touch. Didn't have dessert. Way to full.
