Delicious food, and a very cozy environment. Very instagram worthy! Love that they had local kombucha on tap. Cocktails for brunch are a smidge too expensive IMO, but the food was well worth the price. Will go back for brunch for sure!
We (4) all enjoyed our dinners. Our waiter was good, didn't hover or make us sit and wait. Will return!
Good service, good food (the bread pudding dessert was great!). VERY loud at peak dinner time; dim lighting at night.
Had my favorite drink discounted for happy hour. I don't order this drink in just any bar b/c of inconsistent quality, so seeing it featured for happy hour made me happy and it was good. I had 2. Although not busy, service started out very slowly, so I was worried, but it picked up and was fine throughout. We had the roast chicken entree and the fried chicken sandwich. I would recommend both and look forward to returning.
We just had a small group for drinks and appetizers. We ordered about 6 or 7 different appetizers, each better than the last! Great cocktails too (Old Fashioned). Have scheduled a lunch there in a couple of weeks. Great spot!
My gin cocktail was scrumptious and the rice bowl with tofu was delicious, balanced and interesting. My friends meals also looked very good. Our wait person looked bored tired and was not friendly. The hostess was very welcoming. I think the interior needs a makeover to fulfill the clever concept.
Great food. Good burger and the kale salad is amazing.
We went there last week only to find out that you have to wait for a breakfast one hour without reservation. Yes, breakfast. Luckily Coalition took us and there were no issues with parking. Today we returned with a reservation. When you think about “book club” you think quiet and comfortable seating. If you are thinking about CA “book” you think seafood and plenty of light dishes. Their breakfast menu was swimming in cheese, cream and butter and the loudness of the atmosphere made me sick to be there and enjoy food. Their seating also left something to point out as you are there like sardine listening to a next table screaming to HEAR themselves speak. It is definitely difficult for few wait people navigate tight spaces, 3%? The only thing I could not complain about was a drink. Considering that we been there one hour after they opened this place really had a feel of Uptown NOT a family friendly restaurant located across from a church. Yes, eggs Benedict was superb even with a colder muffin but I could not enjoy any of my breakfast at all.
Service was so-so, which made the rest of it not as great as possible. We loved the food, drinks, and bus-man (nice to see a familiar face from Cafe Maude!). Ambiance was nice, too!
Food was great and our server was friendly and attentive. Will definitely go back.
Made a reservation for lunch on a Saturday no knowing it would be a brunch menu. Ok, I can live with that. I had the spinach and cheddar omelet and asked for egg whites, no problem. The omelet was light and delicious however there was no cheese. I didn't even realize it until I left. The salad it was served with was fresh and the dressing was delicious. My friend had the brunch bowl and it looked and was very bland. I find it funny that you can get a cup of tea for $2.25 but and iced tea is $3.00. Makes no sense to me. I also didn't appreciate the 3% charge or tax on the bottom of the bill for healthcare. There were two charges on my particular bill and when we asked we were informed that the Bartman group thinks it's a good idea for the guests to pay for the employees healthcare. It does not say it is optional, and I'm sure, by law, it can't be mandatory and our particular server didn't know why our check had two taxes for health care on it. She said they do this as opposed to raising their prices. Frankly, I'll pay a dollar extra for my meal as opposed to being "taxed" for paying for someones healthcare. That is not my responsibility. You should seriously think about removing this. I'm sure you're getting away with it as most people don't pay attention to the bill. Shame on you Bartman Group. I will be boycotting your restaurants. It's a shame because I would otherwise like to return to this particular place even though the noise level is off the charts.
Painfully loud. The good food and very nice service were overshadowed by the fact that my friend and I couldn’t hear each other!
I was let down by our experience here. We went for dinner and sadly the best part was the cocktails. The food was subpar and though the ambiance is beautiful, with all the fantastic restaurants out there, I don't see myself returning.
Lively place on a Thursday evening. Good food and service. You need a new tab printer. I had trouble reading the bill total and left a smaller tip and total than I should have.
I was excited to try Book Club and while I wasn't disappointed, I wasn't blown away either. The chicken skewers were hands down the best thing we had. Service was a little slow despite them not being too busy and as other reviewers have noted, it is pretty loud in the dining area. My cocktail was fine and chicken sandwich was flavorful. My mother in law ordered the fried burrito and thought it was a little bland. Overall the menu lacked flow. If they beefed up the skewer and side options I think that would be best.
The menu had a good selection of small plate and full course options. The prices are reasonable. It is relatively quiet and good for conversation, but I suggest asking to be seated as far away from the bar as possible as that area is a bit noisy. I look forward to warm weather when we can enjoy a glass of wine and small plate outdoors.
The price/quality relationship of this place is off. When you pay $24 for a roast chicken plate, it should be either spot on (and not dried out) or just a huge pale full of food. Same with the rice bowl or the appetizers that we had. Everything was eatable, but should have been 1/3 less dollars. The wine/beer selection was under par as well. The one thing that got me at the end is the extra 3% charge for healthcare. What? Really! Yes, an extra 3% on food and drinks. And nobody told me that before sitting down and ordering. I find it admirable to give your employees healthcare. We do that too. But build it into your price. Figure it out. My clients would laugh at me, if I would start charging healthcare on top.
This was really enjoyable. Great food! The space was rather loud but the food made up for that.
Super slow and inattentive service. I went 20 minutes without coffee after our waitperson asked if I'd like a refill. Very slow to greet us at the table, 15 minutes passed before placing our order, and we waited an eternity for the check.
My husband enjoyed his breakfast bowl, but only because the waitperson asked if he wanted to add a protein, which he did in choosing the short rib. But the protein choices are nowhere on the menu. So ??
I ordered grilled cheese, which looked great but tasted like it had been grilled on a surface that had not been cleaned. Old, fatty tasting oil on the bread. Not great.
I don't think we will go back.
The food was excellent, and the prices are reasonable. But it is so noisy that it is difficult to have any conversation. No book club could meet at Book Club - the members couldn't hear each other! I hope the owner installs some noise-buffering materials soon.
Good not cooked. Waited over an hour for food. Decor not book related.
First time checking this place out and it did NOT disappoint! Female owned establishment with a very classy literature themed menu. Service was prompt, friendly, and the food was incredible! Definitely recommend the cauliflower burrito and the banana split.
The only complaint I had was the parking due to the location, but that was easily forgiven when compared to the rest of our experience. Will definitely come back!
Food prices were okay but the portions were small. I ordered the crispy chicken burrito which makes it sound like it has crispy chicken in it. No it's just the tortilla is crispy and it came served on a plate. It basically looked like an Amy's frozen burrito on a plate. The drinks came in the equivalent of a shot glasses and if you want to shout at your date at the table this is the place for you as it's super loud inside.
Staff is awesome and the food healthy and delicious.
I met with a friend that I had not seen for quite a while and we had a great time reminising. The meal was good, they allowed us to talk for a while before we ordered (per our request) so the timing was great. It is a cute place with a nice atmosphere. The staff was very friendly.
The food was good but the noise level was so loud that we could not wait to get out of there. Our server had trouble hearing us and service was lacking because of this. We don’t plan to return.
It just isn’t there yet but great service and cocktails-food not outstanding....i’d Go again if heard food better....
It was very good. Kim Bartmann knows how to do this.
We went for restaurant week, but made it in time for some cheap happy hour apps. I had the steak salad which was delicious!! My husband had the fried chicken sandwich, which he raved about. I have seen complaints about the noise, but we did not have a problem with it. We could easily hear each other, and part of the fun of going out is the noise!
I only wish I lived closer, so I could walk over for happy hour more often :)
A little loud didn’t like smell when I came in. Server was very good
Restaurant was noisy. While the food was creative the menu was limited. The three meals were OK but not worth the price. Do not anticipate we will return.
A worthy successor to Cafe Maude. We look forward to coming back. Squash soup and fried chicken sandwiches were very good.
Tuesday night dinner with a friend - cocktails were great; salad was overdressed, burger was great as where the French Fries. Chicken Burrito was a huge disappointment - mostly heavy white sauce inside a deep fried burrito. We expected more chicken and perhaps a few veggies. Service was attentive and good but I live downtown so wouldn't venture that far for a burger. Disappointing.
Great attentive service, with touches of the “Book Club” vibe scattered throughout. The drink menu offers an interesting mix of selections, and the bar harkens back to a golden era. Salads are particularly citrusy, while the soups are heavy on the spices. Skewers are a mixed bag - the tofu option is a fantastic choice while the short rib was bone dry. If porchetta is on the menu, definitely try it out. Oh, and save room for dessert - highly recommend the bread pudding!
This was our first visit to Open Book since it opened (we were big Cafe Maude fans). Open Book experience was great. We had a reservation and our table was ready when we arrived. Great service, great food, great atmosphere. We will definitely be back.
Loved it! Fun menu, great food, cozy, wonderful service. We will definitely be back, can't wait to try other things on the menu!
Very good dining experience, but noise level too high.
Out of 3 meals one was excellent one was good and one was okay. Service was great to start then it dropped off and we were invisible. Cute space but quite loud. With so many great places to dine at in the twin cities, our party voted it average and probably would not return.
Gorgeous food & a cozy atmosphere, with top notch service.
Our second visit to Book Club. First visit was awesome! Pork and beans and a rice bowl. Both were very flavorful and larger than what we could eat. Second visit the opposite. Pork and beans were fatty and bean portion was half the size. Chicken sandwich was somewhat flavorful but tiny. Fries were undercooked. Rice bowl was again fantastic. We want this place to make it but they appear to be working through consistency issues. Will give Book Club one more chance.
