Bonaparte Ratings and Reviews
A very special restaurant!
As the first sentence indicates, Bonaparte is a very special restaurant. Located in Old Montreal on a quaint cobblestone street you enter a world of elegance and sophistication exemplified by white table cloths, cordial service and fine dining.
We selected the Table d’Hote menu and both had the salad which was delicious and a generous portion. That was followed by a steak in peppercorn sauce for my wife and the duo of lamb shank and smoked pork belly for me. All of these were delicious, especially thanks to their sauces. The side dishes were also delicious and the presentation was first rate.
The wine list is deep and broad with good selections at all price ranges by the glass, by the carafe and by the bottle.
For dessert we both selected the citron taste (a lime tart) and coffee both of which were delicious. I neglected to mention that there was a basket of white and multigrain bread that likewise was delicious.
Service started off fantastically well but at some point went a bit off track, with longer periods of inattention than would have seemed appropriate (one should not have to ask for refill of an empty water glass or coffee cup) but despite these gaps it was a special dinner in a special a elegant restaurant.
We were in Montreal for a long weekend and have to say this was our favorite restaurant. All were wonderful but Bonaparte was special. The courses were simply elegant yet unique and very tasty. The recommended wine paring was delightful. Our courses included lobster bisque, French onion soup, lobster stew, and broiled fish. Desserts are usually not up to par in most restaurants, but the torte we shared was very nice.
I submitted an online reservation request and noted how my disability could be eased with the proper seating. Upon arrival, my wife and I were welcomed by the Maitre d' , who escorted us to a table that was absolutely perfect for my condition. My reservation notes were read and acted on. I recommend the veal chop with the wooded sauce. Wait staff and service, along with food were impeccable. Thank you for such a memory.
Second time dining here, and it did not disappoint. My only grievance is that I ordered a carafe of Italian red for $28 and was charged $40 for a French Red. I mentioned this to my server but he said I ordered the French. Both of my dining companions said I ordered the Italian. He should have changed the bill and not make feel as though I was ripped off!!!
Service was very good, but food was better. We were very pleased with out tasting menu. I requested a quiet table for my wife's birthday dinner and the restaurant didn't disappoint, it would have been nice to have them bring out a cake or other pastry with a candle to recognize my wife's birthday.
Our first waiter Jason was wonderful, but he was then replaced by another gentleman. After having asked for a slope of pie to celebrate a friend's birthday we asked for the bills and specified each their own. The waiter returned with 3 bills. He had assumed that we were splitting the bill for the fourth person. I thought that was an odd assumption to make.
Overall, it's a quiet, old school spot, where they seem to host mostly tourists. As a local this wouldn't be my first recommendation.
The service at Bonaparte is outstanding! We arrived a little early and the barman was friendly, welcoming and helpful as we picked our cocktails during the short wait for our table. Our waiter was friendly, helpful and very attentive! We had the fixed price menu which was great value considering the great quality of the food! I would highly recommend this restaurant!
The food was outstanding. The service was outstanding. Our waiter was particularly helpful .We ordered some cocktails and they were done Perfect by the bartender. The restaurant was packed but the noise level was just right. Next trip back to Montreal we will be eating there again.
The foie gras Creme Brulee is worth the trip. Also, fabulous Grand Marnier Souffle. Order 1 for 2 people, it is huge. We had dinner here 4 years ago and so once again in Montreal we dined there again. Just as wonderful as before. Great service. Also stayed in the small hotel attached. Request table 1 by the window.
