Michelin starred Boka Restaurant has been a fixture in Chicago dining since 2003. In January 2014, Chef Lee Wolen joined as Executive Chef/Partner after the restaurant underwent a major renovation. Since his time at Boka, critics have taken notice. Phil Vettel of Chicago Tribune and Eater Chicago both named Lee as “2014 Chef of the Year.” Most recently, Lee was named 2015 “Chef of the Year” and Boka restaurant was awarded 2015 “Restaurant of the Year” at Chicago’s coveted Jean Banchet Awards. Boka’s food features contemporary, American cuisine, focusing on seasonality and sourcing as many local ingredients as possible. Pasty Chef Meg Galus joined Boka’s kitchen in 2015 and provides a seamless transition between savory and sweet, mirroring Wolen’s use of excellent, high quality ingredients that are prepared and plated beautifully.

Boka Ratings and Reviews
The food, service and ambiance were all phenomenal. I was there on a date and they seated us in the “fern room” in a corner booth. It almost seemed like I specifically requested that table but the restaurant must have predicted the date and gave us an intimate booth. We ordered 4 courses plus desert (including the slow roasted short rib- unbelievable) and they split / portioned everything out onto two plates for us, which was a really nice service. Desert was also exceptional - the chocolate, hazelnut, whatever, it was bomb. My only criticism, and it’s fairly minor in the grand scheme, was the timing. The first three courses were brought out in fairly rapid succession. It would have been nice if they spaced them out a little bit more but honestly not a huge deal. I would HIGHLY recommended Boka to anyone looking for an expectional dining experience.
This dinner was the highlight of our first trip to Chicago! The ambiance is romantic but fun, excellent service but not stuffy. Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly, we felt very comfortable talking with him and learning more about the amazing food and wine. If you can swing it, go for the tasting menu with wine pairing!
Boka is, hands down, one of the best restaurants in Chicago and elsewhere. Superior service by the wait team which included 2 Jacks, Brandon, and Ally. Phenomenal and creative foods are elegantly served in a timely fashion. My starter, a wonderful tortilla was very tasty. My entree, braised short ribs, were perfectly cooked and very tender.
I wholeheartedly recommend Boka. I have eaten here on many occasions and have never been disappointed. Great atmosphere, staff and food!!
Easily one of the best restaurants in Chicago. Everything we had was fantastic, from the cocktails and amuse bouche through dessert. The menu is not huge but everything is carefully put together in creative ways so that it doesn't taste like anything you've had before. The dry aged beef tartare, the heirloom carrots, the grilled bass entree and the beet entree with seeds were all amazing. It's a pretty spot with low lights and intimate tables. The service was fantastic. We ate before Steppenwolf, but will certainly come back just for the food.
I did rate good for vegetarians: While the selections are not extensive, we did have several vegetarian things that were delicious. Unlike a lot of restaurants that just put a token risotto or pasta on, they come up with innovative vegetarian selections.
Had a business dinner here and was not disappointed. We tried the chef's 8-course tasting menu, and the kitchen handled a food allergy in our group with aplomb. The waiter's recommendations for cocktails and wine were spot-on, and the food was exceptional. Highly recommend.
I had an excellent time. I have new allergies which they accommodated gracefully. They always surprise my palate with combinations of delicious tastes— I always say I discover new taste buds whenever I eat here. The food was delicious, our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and we will continue to come here for all our special occasions.
What an experience ! We came here last year for cocktails before our diner at the next door , (3 michelin star restaurant) and found this place nice and friendly. So we came back to try it , and it well was worth it , and we didn't know then, they had a 1 michelin star , which they highly deserve.
The staff is wonderful, starting from the Valet to the bus boy, all are great). went on a late thursday night (9:30 pm)., and thought maybe it was too late (not for me, but for the kitchen...) and in no way did we fell pushed to finish our meal and eventhough, we left late and we're the last table in our room, while finishing our wine, the waiter (Jack) was very pleasant, helpful, knowledgable, kind, unobtrusive, and does his job to perfection !
The menu , you just want to try everything on there.
The food ; ALL the plates served were a burst of flavors to the tastebuds.
The carrots , how can they make of such simple ingredient to be sooo good and flavorful ? the Octopus, is perfectly cooked, not chewy and well paired.
Entrees were just the same, delicious !
Seared Scallops and Long roasted beef short rib, is to die for.
The ravioli es wonderful.
make room for desert, they are so tasty.
Will be back, and would love to try the tasting menu if it were least expensive...
Love this place ! keep up the good work and go before they get an extra star !
From the moment we walked into Boka I could tell it was going to be a great night. Staff greeted us wishing us a happy anniversary, sat us at a lively table at the front of the restaurant, and providedus with complimentary champagne.
We opted for the 8 course tasting menu and it was incredible. I wasn't sure which wine to choose so the wine manager helped; he was great. Every course was wonderful, I wouldn't change a thing.
An exquisite, exquisite dining experience at Chef Lee Wolen's Michelin-starred Boka in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. Boka's menu, along with its architecture, interior decor, and superior service were nothing short of utter perfection. Wolen's powerful flavors and concise plating will no doubt impress you, providing an uncomplicated yet highly sophisticated and complete sensory experience. BRAVO, Boka!!!
The staff at Boka is simply phenomenal. The food was delicious as well but it was the service that blew our minds-the staff truly went out of its way to make our night a magical night! We will always remember their wonderful gestures and will be sure to tell all of our friends about our amazing experience tonight.
I don't say this lightly, but my dinner at BOKA was a perfect dining experience. We all chose the tasting menu, and were rewarded by a three-hour delight. Every course was adventurous and well-explained by our friendly and knowledgable waiter. Perfectly timed, flavored, and plated. The final "wow" moment was a sealed menu following the meal so we could remember every delightful morsel. A+
An Ideal spot for our post-Steppenwolf-matinee dinner.
Knowing that Boka is a Michelin-starred restaurant, experience, establishment, I had certain expectations that unfortunately were not met.
I enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant: the lighting, the hum of conversation, the walls/ceiling/floors/tables. I enjoyed the silverware and plating. We sat under the heater though. The wine list was extensive in that it featured wines from the world. Cocktails looked interesting though we didn’t get to try as we preferred to do some wine.
Moreover, my party wanted to do the tasting menu. Our waiter asked us if we had any restrictions (we didn’t) or preferences—and maybe this is where we went wrong. Two of us did not like duck (I know, blasphemy) but our waiter was like, “OK, well we’ll do duck for one of your party and for the other two, the chef will do something else.” We got very excited because past tasting experiences weren’t so accommodating to individual preferences. The two non-duck people were excited that the one person was to try the duck as we wanted to see its presentation and perhaps try a taste (if it is that good we weren’t averse to having duck). However, by our 6th course, we realized that no duck was coming. Our waiter apologized for the lack of duck later in the evening but from course 5-8, our hearts had sunk. Moreover, during the course, there were delays in platings/service as a dish was skipped, and we had to wait further from one course to the next.
All in all we enjoyed interesting takes on sashimi, oysters, scallops (our second favorite), bass, risotto (our favorite), octopus, venison (had a lot of gristle but wasn’t gamey), sesame and earl gray tea ice cream desserts (that counted as two courses). It was just unfortunate that we had these expectations re: a more personalized experience that was never realized given the miscommunication re: duck, the delay in entree presentation (the waiter asked how our fish was before got a fish; our paired wine was almost finished when it did arrive.)
First time here and would definitely go back again!! Perfect restaurant for us to celebrate a birthday. Plate portions were split to share and each serving was just "enough" with room for dessert. We left feeling full and satisfied. Every single thing we ordered was phenomenal...I'm not exaggerating. EXCELLENT!! Great selection for both vegetarian and quality meats.
Superb table service by all the attendants. The atmosphere, service and quality of food made it for a fantastic experience. Highly recommend for anyone considering. A+!!
This restaurant is a lovely space to dine in and the food was declicious. We thought the serving size was a bit on the sparse side for the price. We celebrated our daughter's 30th birthday, and they brought out a dessert with beautiful writing and a candle. Nice touch!! We are all foodies, and we were not disappointed on that score!
