Boca Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I went to celebrate our birthdays which are just a few days apart. His meal had scallops and clams and tasted very good but he bit down on more than one broken piece of shell...not from his clams which were all whole. Nearly broke a tooth ...I was impressed that an employee saw what happened and came over before we had a chance to get someone. They promptly took the meal away and said they would replace it immediately. But when they came back they said it was the same scallops and clams over a new bed of spaghetti squash...5 minutes later he bit into another piece of broken shell buried in the food. After the second time we were offered a free dessert which we didn't eat because it was not good at all. We were very surprised. Not likely we'd go back. It's a shame too because so many of the beverages and other menu items are so very creative and delicious. I had shrimp and grits which was very good and the strawberry pie cocktail also very good and very creative.
I have eaten at Boca many times and have ordered the same plate often. Very disappointed this time as the portions seem 1/4 of what i had become accustomed to. Literally appeared like they scraped together just enough to make it look somewhat presentable. A bit embarrassing as i had raved about my dish to my fri prior to ordering.... she must have thought there was something wrong with my perception for sure!!!
Being out-of-towners is alway kind-of hard to choose local restraints. We chose Boca because it was walkable from our hotel at Riverwalk and the menu looked interesting.
We were excited to taste their watermelon gazpacho, smoked meatloaf, and a tomato flatbread that has almond ricotta. Wow, were we blown away by the combination of flavors.
This is now our all-time favorite restaurant, so glad we discovered it, and will dine here every time we visit Tampa.
We had a free dinner coupon for my wife's birthday and went last night (Friday)-we live about a mile away but too cold for us Floridians to walk so we drove-its a tough area for parking so be prepared to pay $5 for valet. We had reservations for 6:45 pm and were promptly seated. This place is always busy, especially on weekends. Our server was Sara who was very helpful and upbeat and did a great job explaining every dish. My wife had a glass of red wine, and I tried the basil lemonade, which was excellent (freshly made). We shared the caprese salad for an appetizer (excellent with pears and tomatoes, and they served it to each of us with nice presentation). I had the meatloaf with braised brussels sprouts and corn succotash, and my wife had the Chefs Surprise (which Sara told us what it was anyways-no surprises here!), which was smothered chicken over potatoes, peppers etc. We never have dessert, but made an exception tonight and had the fruit cobbler which came warm with vanilla ice cream. I am getting full just writing about all of this now! Everything was great, and the only comment would be that our entrees came out while we were finishing up our salads, but otherwise we were not rushed.
This is a great local spot in Hyde Park district and we highly recommend it, especially to first time visitors.
Unfortunately not a great experience for the four of us. Our waitress Jordan was awesome however. She was responsive on issues raised. Unfortunately, the kitchen didn't live up to expectations. The flatbread was great although entrees not. I had to send my first steak back as it was way over-cooked to me medium rare order. Our friends were not impressed with their entrees either. Jordan tried to save the day and did everything to accomodate but I would always rather pay for a meal I expect versus a comp on a meal that was off.
This was Christmas Eve that we ate at Boca. We went to an evening church service and instead of cooking at home, the cook (me) decided it would be nice just to go out and be pampered. We selected Boca because we had been there before and always enjoyed the atmosphere and food. We had our 20 something vegan son with us so I needed to find a place that could accommodate his needs. We were all very pleased with the service and food. So much so, I think we'll do it again next Christmas Eve.
Starting out with the fact that I love Boca and its very good, I was a little perplexed with the seating arrangement at lunch on this visit. We arrived at 11:15 and were seated in the very back, by the bathrooms, as were most of the other people who were seated after us. This, despite the fact that all of the window seats in the cool front area were wide open. They were cleaning the windows during service hours, so maybe they got behind, but I would have appreciated being seated up front.
Service was great. Food was good - I wasn't thrilled with the zucchini fries. Little to no seasoning in the batter and the breading was a bit thick for my taste. They were pretty bland even with the dipping sauce. Loved the gazpacho and the flatbread of the day that had chicken sausage on it.
I'll be back for sure, but I hope they seat me in the front!
Quick hits (sort of):
Pulled up to the entrance of the drive off of platt about 5-10 minutes before our reservation. Literally sat on platt st for about 12-15 minutes waiting for the valet to get cars out of the way so we could get into the parking lot. Due to the time it was taking, we were going to go from being a few minutes early to a few minutes late for our 715 reservation. I figured id call and let the front know we were here... just couldnt get into the parking lot. Rings and goes to automated voicemail, no option to talk to anyone.
Was finally able to park and valet was rude.
By the time we got to host stand, we walked up and checked in at around 7:21 for a 7:15 reservation. The hostess says “oh, i cancelled your reservation as a no show”.... ummm... “i politely said, are you serious? Ive been sitting in your valet line for 15 minutes and tried to call but nobody answers the phone?”.... she gives me a stare and ignores me, says nothing. They did end up “finding us a table” though. At this point my wife and I were both pretty irritated at the valet/hostess attitudes and actually pulled up opentable and looked for openings nearby, however, we were on a tight schedule so we decided to sit down anyway.
Now, from here, everything was great. Service was good, drinks were good, and food was delicious.... hence the overall positive review. But, a nice meal out is about more than just the meal... its the way you treat your guests and the overall service you provide.
Despite the great food, i doubt we’ll be back anytime soon as there are far more friendly/welcoming establishments in town with food that is also on par.
The food is always fantastic. The heirloom swine pizza is my absolute favorite. All the food is fresh, good service, nice ambiance. Slightly on the noisy side, but overall I would definitely recommend. We also had a chocolate toffee dessert to split that was amazing!
