We purchased a bottle of wine and it was fantastic. The crab cake appetizer was great as well. Service was a little slow but we weren't in a rush. Ordered the meal for two which was a 3lb rib eye and 2 lbs of lobster with a side of mashed potatoes and two sides of bearnaise. Ordered the steak medium bc I had to compromise with my husband who likes it barely pink. I can eat med rare. This steak was practically raw. As in, the outside was barely brown and the middle was purple. I HATE sending things back because it feels so high maintenance, but the entree alone was $180 so I wanted to be able to eat it. The mashed potatoes were mealy, maybe they were instant? And the bearnaise sauce was terrible. It was like a pudding on top and watery underneath. Cheesecake for dessert was great. Way better places in this area to eat for the same amount of money or less.
We go to this restaurant for our yearly family dinner for Valentine's Day. It has always been amazing. The wait staff was very attentive and we never had to wait for anything. The food is so yummy and plentiful. Usually, expensive restaurants have tiny portions, but Bobby Van's isn't like that at all. The sides are "family" size and are good for 2-3 people. The cocktails are wonderful too. They also have an extensive wine selection that you can buy by the glass or bottle. Also, they frequently have Groupons so that is a plus as well.
My husband and I went for our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple. Mike our waiter was awesome and knowledgeable. He suggested that I start with a seafood dish, which consisted of gigantic crab meat, jumbo shrimp, and lobster! Superb! He also suggested the Washington apple martini which was perfect! Kudo’s to the bartender! We will be going again.
Valentine’s weekend dinner - quite sublime! Great food! Highlights: delicious chocolate mousse cake, oysters on half shell, escargot, filet, Tom Collins, single malt scotch... but also, we really appreciated our attentive but not obtrusive waiter, the decor is nice but not amazing (music good volume a tad dated - very 80s)... we will be back!
My wife and I came here after an early afternoon show and had another great time. Rudy, our waiter did a superb job taking care of us and explaining the specials. Service was prompt without being rushed. As always food was terrific. Wife's surf (1/2 lobster) and turf (filet) special was perfectly cooked and nicely presented. My NY Strip was perfectly cooked and delicious. Drinks were good, and not that expensive (for downtown DC). Ron, the waiter from our last visit stopped by to chat. Another really great experience. Keep up the good work!
The food did not impress me and certainly wasn’t worth the price. Mike’s Grill and Sweet Water Tavern food tastes better and has a more elegant decor. My brother and his wife loves Bobby Vans but they are wine drinkers and love seafood. So a hit for some but not for me and my spouse. Service excellent though!
One of the best steaks in the city - and always consistent. The Chef engaged the customers and ensured satisfaction. Bar staff (Kevin), was outstanding. Server Boil and Hector made our experience outstanding. Highly recommend Bobby Van’s to anyone visiting DC, or any townie that wants a quality meal in a local treasure.
Great food and very attentive service. A bit high priced but worth it. My only gripe is in DC where we were sitting there were 5 servers standing near our table....we felt like we were being constantly watched ....our every move.....they should move about or hang away from patrons while they are eating.......service was great don't get me wrong but trying to have a nice meal with my wife while 5 or six waiters stand looking at you.........
The food and attentive service is always a reason to come to Bobby Vans. Ron, you are always the best every time my hubby and I stop in for a hot delicious meal. Our experience would not be the same without your presence in the restaurant. Bobby Vans Crew, you all knocked it out the park again (as always) tonite. Thank you!
This was my second visit to Bobby Van's and just like before, the food was delicious, perfectly prepared and filling! Our server was Jose and he was a great balance between attentive and overbearing. He was friendly, thoroughly answered our questions and made good suggestions. He even sang happy birthday to my fiance all by himself while bringing the dessert. The only thing that concerned me during this visit was the noise in our section and the boisterous parties that kept being seated there. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence or done on purpose, as each party, including mine, seemed to fit the same demographic... so to speak. When observing other sections, it seemed to be more diverse with a reasonable noise level. Other than this, the dining experience was great! My last experience did not include these issues so it might have just been a coincidence. Overall, we really really enjoyed ourselves.
Wonderful meal, excellent service, close to work. I always enjoy the food at Bobby Vans and I especially liked the top choices offered for Restaurant Week. The service was excellent and fast. I highly recommend Bobby Vans for fine dinning at a fair price. They take Groupon coupons too!
My baked potatoe was cold, my salad was wilted and my steak looked like someone had cut half of it away prior to serving it. I complained to my waiter and he shrugged his shoulders. I've dined at your establishment several times before, and I must say my prior experience have been great and my steak was much larger. But this must have been an off day for your restaurant.
Been to this restaurant several times, and like the other experiences, this time was also excellent! Food was delicious -- as it always is! This is a pricier steak restaurant, but thank goodness for Groupon -- made dinner an extra good value for the high-end quality of food and the restaurant. Service -- as it always is -- was superior. We always request Rodney's service area, as he is the best! Always on-target with his recommendations, always attentive without being intrusive, and he's got a wonderful personality/demeanor about him that makes for an even more enjoyable dining experience. Highly recommend the restaurant; highly recommend the bone-in rib eye and creamed spinach; and highly recommend seating in Rodney's area.
The bone in rib-eye was very disappointing. Although cooked as requested, the steak was unexceptional and had much more fat than previous visits. The texture and flavor of the meat were nowhere as satisfying given the cost. The creamed spinach and mashed potato sides were adequate. The service, however, was superb.
We enjoyed the chili calamari as a starter. Our entrees - scallops and clam linguini- were just ok. The scallops were slightly over cooked and salty. The linguini pasta could’ve been creamier. We also ordered a side of Brussels sprouts. We were expecting crunchy Brussels sprouts but it was like a slaw, the taste was good though. We used a groupon but if we paid full price we would’ve been pretty disappointed in the food we got for the value.
