Our Server was friendly and funny. Food was quick and delicious. The shrimp and grits appetizer was amazing!
Went here for a special Birthday celebration. The food, service, and ambiance were great! It was a little pricey but worth it. I will definitely add this to my list of quality steakhouses.
The service and food was amazing! Can't wait to go back!
Wonderful meal with great service. I always return for the Porterhouse for two but we also enjoyed the surf and turf (filet and lobster) and an appetizer of escargot (amazing).
Petit filet mignon was delicious. Our family celebrated my husband's 50th birthday at Bobby Van's. We were pleased with the service, however the wait staff didn't seem to know how to handle people with food allergies. Valet parking was convenient.
The steak was cooked to perfection. A little pricey, but worth it. My only gripe is that the lights were very low, so I had trouble reading the menu. Overall - excellent.
I am always baffled by how casual is the maitre de. Beyond that I am always happy with the service, ambiance and food.
My wife and I were in town for a few days visiting the museums and tried this highly reccomended restaurant. First, I grabbed what was listed as the last reservation on Open Table for a 9pm dinner. When we arrived, to our surprise the location was maybe 20% occupied. Due to this fact, they must have lost an abundance of business. Anyway, we were seated in a very nice booth and have no negatives to the attentive service we received. My complaints center around what we ordered. First, for an appetizer, we ordered the calamari. The calamari was actually good, but was served in a small bowl with a sweet chili sauce. There was also a thicker dipping sauce along side. The top half of the calamari was good as the chili sauce had pooled in the bottom of the bowl, the bottom half of the bowl was overly saturated with the sauce and when eating, that's all you could taste. We tried the dipping sauce, but it was a VERY heavy nut flavored item and really did not match the calamari it was served with. For my entree, I ordered the New York Strip. They asked if I wanted the Wagu special and I agreed and ordered Onion Rings as a side. My wife ordered the SeaBass meal. When our meal arrived, we were stuck by the portion size. My Strip was at maximum 6oz (standard size but about a 1/2 " in thickness) and the onion rings were the string type you would get at a fast food joint. Maybe I should have asked prior to ordering but I order the same (as advertised) Wagu strips from Allen Brothers and they do not sell a cut this thin. It was similar to a thin carne asada you would be served in a Mexican restaurant. Don't get me wrong, the flavor was good. As for the onion rings, again, maybe I should have asked, but I have never been served tiny strings at a reputable steakhouse.
My wife's meal was very similar and without getting into a lot of detail, her SeaBass portion was maybe 3oz. Unfortunately, after spending over $200 for dinner, we left hungry.
We had 4 in our party. We all loved the food. Serving were a good size. We will visit again.
Great experience, will go back.
This is a special place that makes diners feel welcomed. I can't say enough about the service that anticipates your needs - Mike has been an exceptional Bobby Van representation of professionalism and truely cares about the diners that walk in the door and come back because of him. Bravo Bobby Vans!
This steakhouse tends to fly under the radar a bit since the D.C. area has a glut of specialty dining options. Good standard steakhouse fare. Not too busy later in the evening, so seating was relatively quick. Staff attentive. Had a good filet mignon cooked to order. Shrimp cocktail was fresh and quick. Not disappointed with chicken dish. French fries were crisp and hot. Meal portions were decent enough to take home as leftovers. Would go back (need to save some coin for next meal.)
Everything would have been perfect if we didn’t have to listen to two very loud women having a very inappropriate dinner conversation. Some people just don’t know how to act in public.
Great service!! Sat us even though we were super early.
We had a very enjoyable evening. Everything was perfect. Staff super friendly and very accommodating
On a night when everything was closed due to wind, I wanted a place close by my hotel and I craved steak. So I got a quick reservation at Bobby Van's and headed over. I was seated at a booth and my waiter appeared pretty quickly. I chose the tap water and looked over the menu while he brought crusty French bread out with whipped butter. Yum!
I broke the meal into 4 courses. I started with a half dozen oysters on the half shell. Meaty, good size, and delicious! Next i had escargot which came with individual little roasts to eat it with. Unlike many places the escargot was not drowned in cheese. It was also delicious. Then came the filet mignon and a side of asparagus. I requested medium and the meat was perfectly prepared to that temperature. It came with some crispy potato sticks which were a surprise but good. The asparagus was wonderful, and with the squeeze of a lemon, tasted delicious. I finished off the meal with chocolate mousse cake but without the whipped cream. It took was silky smooth and just what you'd want in a chocolate mousse cake. I had coffee with dessert.
My waiter surprised me by thanking me for being such a pleasure to wait on. He said I was polite and pleasant and he really appreciated it because not everyone is. He gave me the restaurant calling card with his name and said to ask for his section anytime I returned. It made me wonder exactly how rude normal customers in DC are because I just behaved as I always do. Servers are people and not my personal meal slave so I treat them as I would hope to be treated. It's not difficult. The entire staff was nice and they never let an empty plate sit for long before taking it away, and my tea glass was never empty.
The food costs about what you'd expect from a formal steakhouse, and I highly recommend Bobby Van's.
Great service! I would recommend this place for a date Night.
Amazing service. Came because I was using a Groupon, but ended up spending a lot more. It was worth every penny. Will be back.
Enjoyed our meal here. Close to our hotel, 7 minute walk. Excellent server. Only downside was when a table of 8 was seated near our booth, resulting in a noise level that was impossible to talk through or relax in.
Wanting to go to a great steak location in DC, we selected Bobby Vans and were not disappointed. The oysters on the half shell (highly recommended) tasted like they were just pulled out of the bay and the filet steak was charred to perfection. The food was excellent and the service equaled the quality of the ingredients. I'm very much looking forward to heading back to this location in the future.
Great food great restaurant
I'll be totally honest... we weren't thrilled but we weren't terribly unhappy either. Bobby Van's hasn't been a notable steakhouse, in DC, in years, which is why (as I've seen) they started doing Groupons. Our experience started with having to pay $12 for valet. While it's not a big deal, it was a bit off-putting as we had carried enough cash to tip a valet but not also pay for it - something that is oftentimes complimentary with your patronage. The staff was nice, minus the host drinking a Starbucks while we were checking in, and him saying to us (as well as everyone else entering our section) that we got the last booth of the night. Note: This is not a trick in D.C. that works when the restaurant is near empty. And, in lieu of this, the staff took forever to clear our dishes, bring us a dessert menu, and for us to get a check. It was clear the longer they had bodies in the restaurant, the more full it seemed for passersby. It took us over 2 1/2 hours to get out of there - something many DCers don't appreciate. As for the food, we have no complaints, though the lobster should have already been cracked. If you decide to go there, note that it's pleasant, decent food, and certainly plenty of privacy, but just expect to pay for valet and be there a while.
The service was top notch from start to finish. It started when we pulled up to valet park until our take home desert arrived. Overall my wife and I had a great experience. We are going again very soon with some friends!
Saw a great deal on Groupon for this restaurant so I thought my wife and daughter and I should try it. The Groupon was basically a 50% off an $80 meal. It can be pricey so the Groupon helps! The service was excellent! We enjoyed the music which was a mix of 80's rock. Meals were prepared quickly and served hot. We all enjoyed a mix of steak and seafood. The sides are plentiful and really made for two. I think the lesson learned from our experience was that you get a lot of food and you could probably get away with splitting an entree and ordering a salad and two sides. The desserts are enormous as well. . . so share!
If a high-end steakhouse is of interest to you, you should make sure that Bobby Van's is in the mix. While a bit more 'classic' than some of their competitors, the experience and service is superb. And of course the steaks were exceptional.
Great food and excellent service. Rudi and Nelson took care of us beyond our expectations, very friendly staff. We are definitely coming back.
One word: AWESOME!
LOVE LOVE this place...
Staff was amazing
Food was great --- I had the chicken kale and spinach salad -- scrumptious!!!!. Other meals were the salmon salad, and fish and chip - the best I have ever tasted.
Must have reservation or dine on the patio.
The service was excellent and our server, Rod G. is the absolute best. The food was delivered to our table in a timely manner, piping hot with exceptional taste.
The shrimp was a bit over cooked to be so expensive. =(
By far one of the best services in DC. Attention to detail and customer needs is immaculate . Highly recommend Bobby Vans!
Worth the drive into the city. Relaxed efficient service and well-prepared steaks!
We purchased a bottle of wine and it was fantastic. The crab cake appetizer was great as well. Service was a little slow but we weren't in a rush. Ordered the meal for two which was a 3lb rib eye and 2 lbs of lobster with a side of mashed potatoes and two sides of bearnaise. Ordered the steak medium bc I had to compromise with my husband who likes it barely pink. I can eat med rare. This steak was practically raw. As in, the outside was barely brown and the middle was purple. I HATE sending things back because it feels so high maintenance, but the entree alone was $180 so I wanted to be able to eat it. The mashed potatoes were mealy, maybe they were instant? And the bearnaise sauce was terrible. It was like a pudding on top and watery underneath. Cheesecake for dessert was great. Way better places in this area to eat for the same amount of money or less.
We go to this restaurant for our yearly family dinner for Valentine's Day. It has always been amazing. The wait staff was very attentive and we never had to wait for anything. The food is so yummy and plentiful. Usually, expensive restaurants have tiny portions, but Bobby Van's isn't like that at all. The sides are "family" size and are good for 2-3 people. The cocktails are wonderful too. They also have an extensive wine selection that you can buy by the glass or bottle. Also, they frequently have Groupons so that is a plus as well.
The service is bad although I still paid the tip. They gave me a cold face and words all the evening. No introduction and recommendation, even answer to your questions.
Nelson, was excellent. He very attentive, pay attention to detail, and made great recommendations. He made our Valentine’s Day dinner very special.
Quality food. Enough variety for everyone. Great service. Booth not the greatest comfort.
The food was good as always. No complaints. Service good as usual as well.
My husband and I went for our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple. Mike our waiter was awesome and knowledgeable. He suggested that I start with a seafood dish, which consisted of gigantic crab meat, jumbo shrimp, and lobster! Superb! He also suggested the Washington apple martini which was perfect! Kudo’s to the bartender! We will be going again.
