Located in New York's landmark Helmsley Building, Bobby Van's Steakhouse has been serving the best porterhouse in town for the last eleven years. Upon entering, one is greeted with the sight of a credenza groaning under the weight of large bottles of wine. A bar full of regular customers is on the left and looking into the one-hundred seat dining room, one sees the thirty foot high ceiling and windows overlooking Park Avenue. To complement our Prime Aged Steaks our Sommelier has created an award winning wine list. When i was getting my coat, the water accused me of being cheap and not tipping ; he shoved the bill in my face... problem was i left a 20% tip ( $36) and he had the wrong person. Point is he never really truly cared about my dining experience .. he was and is a hothead

I was surprised there was no lunch menu. Great food, service and ambiance. But I would go much more often for weekday lunches if there were more affordable lunch options.

Waiter was terrific. After we placed our order he asked if we were open to suggestions which we said yes . He said to try the "best" steak which we quickly agreed. It was exactly what I needed to make the lunch special and move me closer to signing up a new client.

The best part of the evening was the pre dinner drinks at the bar. Tony made great drink and meal recommendations. Once we got to the table, the owcerall experience rapidly declined. Our server was pushy and within minutes of being seated, he wanted to take our order anbareky went over the specials. He was not friendly and had zero personality. We left there knowing we would not come back. For the price you pay to eat there, you expect more. I guess this explains why the restaurant on a Friday evening had more empty tables than patrons!

Its the "Original" Bobby Vans - if your looking for a great steak that you and some other large individuals are going to eat, this is a great call, close to Grand Central.

Food and service were exceptional.
Pricey but all NYC steakhouses are pricey.

I ordered the Tuna specifically Medium, it came rate. The server disappeared and the waiter never came back. Extremely disappointing for an expensive meal

Food and service were excellent. Noise level was a bit elevated but not too much. The wine list was extensive but not too expensive. I've been here for dinner several times and have never been disappointed.

I am so disappointed in this restaurant. We decided to walk the extra distance to eat at this location since it is "the original". We ordered salads, which were good although overpriced. For entrees, we ordered the Porterhouse for two, medium rare. It was cold in the center and completely black on the outside. I understand the somewhat charred flavor with a Porterhouse and can appreciate this. However, the strong flavor of burnt interrupted the quality of the meat. The sautéed mushrooms were mediocre. The server did not check on us throughout the entire meal and we waited quite some time for our check. When I asked for a wine list, I was told that if I wanted a glass to just tell him which one. I order a glass of Pinot noir and it was poor quality. Overall, this very standard meal was over $200 and for a restaurant with such a reputation, I have to think something went wrong.

While Bobby Van's is one of my favorite spots for a Business lunch the junior waiter was not very attentive, which makes this a hit or miss place when prices are high you expect top service every day. All other members were terrific as always. We ordered the Porterhouse for two, which is not large enough for two therefore choose accordingly.

Wow, not afraid to charge you - but quality food. Tuna was excellent, side of mushrooms were a tad soggy. Expensive (8$) coffee was not good.

The location was very nice, and the service was amazing. The food was also very good, but unfortunately everything is way overpriced. For the same meal, I have payed half the cost at other places with equivalent food and service.

Wine cellar was disappointing. Took three tries to find a wine which was $25 more than I wanted to spend. But otherwise - spectacular. My new favorite Steak house.

Classic steak place. Not cheap, but then it is right in mid-town... strong wine list. We ended up easily spending $800 for four (albeit with 3 bottles of $100 or so wine). Steaks were good and huge - none of us had more than 2/3 of the steak. Not sure I’d write home about it. Waiter was fantastic.

I love this location of Bobby Vans in Grand Central at the end. Every time I'm in New York City I ate there the food is delicious to service wonderful. It's just so nostalgic.

I had never been to the Original location of Bobby Vans but had walked by it many times. I was very pleased once inside of what a nice experience the location was. Food and service was perfect and the size of the restaurant was nice as well.
