Bobby Van's Grill - New York Ave.
Bobby Van's Grill is the sister eatery of the highly acclaimed Bobby Van’s Steakhouse from New York City. This eclectic 550-seat New American Steakhouse Grill boasts a slightly more casual and family-friendly atmosphere that also caters to Washington politicians.
Bobby Van’s Grill has a very loyal following of patrons who appreciate its first-rate, dry-aged steaks and seafood, phenomenal wine list, and exceptional professional wait staff – many of whom have worked for Bobby Van’s Grill for more than 12 years. Its new menu also features classic sandwiches and table-side cocktail preparation.
Boasting the largest private dining space of any restaurant in DC, Bobby Van’s Grill can accommodate guests in 7 different rooms! In the fall of 2018, it unveiled a newly renovated atrium (now known as The Atrium @ Bobby Van’s) that accommodates up to 330 people for private events.

The food and service was great. It was a nice atmosphere on the inside. Ignore the construction on the outside of the building.
Excellent! I love the Grill much better than the restaurant, nor accommodating nice ambiance service cozy and WILL come again this time has been 3X in just a WEEK - Luv'n It ♡♡♡♡♡
Fabulous cuisine and service - we both had NY Strips which were cooked medium rare to perfection. Flavorful is an insufficient word to describe the taste - superbly seasoned cut might be a bit closer to an accurate description. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Both the cuisine and the service more than made up for the mediocre venue. The open room atmosphere is fine until it fills up beyond half capacity. With nothing on the walls or floor to absorb the noise, it’s difficult to hear anyone at your own table. But the reverberating sound of a child crying on the opposite side of the room could be heard as if right next to us. Of less significance, our exceptional server returned sheepishly to advise that the bartender couldn’t honor our after dinner drink request for VSOP brandy - of any variety. That was a first to hear of a steakhouse bereft of brandy! Despite the elevated noise and the bar limitations, the steaks, accompaniments and service ably made for a most enjoyable dining experience.
When you make a reservation for NYE, this is not what is expected. Granted, we did make our reservation LATE, but I would highly recommend that Bobby Van's, and ANY other restuarant, NOT open an 'overflow' room. Yes, like the overflow room in your church, that is exactly where my husband and I dined. The service was EXTREMELY slow, the lights were bright, there was NO music playing, and we were seated with just one other couple. Given the silence and ZERO ambiance, we were able to completely hear each other's conversations. First, it took our server 10-15 minutes to even come to our table, drinks arrived 20 minutes after being ordered. The lobster cocktail was the SMALLEST lobster I had ever seen. The lobster tail I purchased on sale at Whole Foods for $6 had more meat than this entire lobster, that didn't even take up a quarter of the large dish of crushed ice it came in. This experience was DISAPPOINTING to say the least. My husband and I ordered 1 last drink and decided to leave the 'cafeteria' atmosphere that we were eating in, and went to the bar. Which was JUST as disappointing or MORE, as the waiters were cashing out their tips with the bartender, and the bar was completely empty. Note to self: NEVER go to Bobby Van's Grill for a romantic evening.
It was New year's Eve, so the place was busy. However, we were taken care of exceptionally well and had a good time. Steaks were GREAT!! Drinks were good, too!
Jose was a wonderful server with a welcoming personality. The sea bass was exquisite and the Cajun rib-eye was flavorful.
Excellent food and service! We enjoyed the evening!
We had a great experience on New Year's eve, with most of the appreciation going to our server who helped to make the evening special.
Even on New Year’s Eve spectacular. Loved the chocolate cake with banana ice cream. Scallops are also a great way to start the meal. Awesome!
The food here is fabulous! I had the crab cake and brussel sprouts and it was delicious. I was here with a large group and everyone raved about their meals. My only complaint was that the spinach could have used a bit more seasoning and my BF's meal was supposed to come with some vegetables and potatoes but it was more like a spoonful of each. Nonetheless, I will definitely go back!
We came for new year’s eve and had the best night!!
Great evening out thr food was delicious, and so was the service.
We were surprisingly unimpressed with our experience. The restaurant itself is fine, the service was definitely lacking. Not personable at all, didn't tell us about the special until we asked, walked up to the table and said what are you going to order. No asking if we had any questions, again didn't tell us about specials.
I don't expect to ever go back.
This might be about the only place in DC that I'd order hanger steak and be 100 percent confident it would come out a super-tender, perfect medium-rare. Every other steak in our party was perfectly cooked as well, and we all tend to be pretty particular about doneness of our meats. It was not a happy night for the staff as it turned out - a party of 20 or so had canceled on them at the last minute after they'd done hours of extra prep - but you wouldn't have known in how they treated us. I hadn't been there in several years but this was a good reminder to be more of a regular.
Great food but the service was off. Ordered a glass of wine to be delivered when my steak was served. Finished 3/4 of the steak before I just finally cancelled the wine. The atmosphere is nice and clubby. Comfortable and quiet.
Food and service were excellent as always. Was surprised the restaurant had a fruit fly problem which made it difficult to enjoy the ambience.
Not the same as it used to be, we go for a dining experience. Knats flying around table into the wine. Service was slow and we thought not genuine. Food just ok not all that. Used to be better. Will not be back
My husband and I dined there for date night I received a Groupon worth $70 towards food and drinks! We loved the atmosphere it was really nice! We will definitely return.
The food and service were great. The only negative was our table. We were seated at a tiny table tucked into a corner in the rest of the restaurant near the extra glasses. It was a little distracting and uncomfortable. Everything else about the experience was great.
It was a great place to have a siblings holiday gathering. The seafood tower was incredible and I loved that our server plated it up for each of us. The sauces were a perfect compliment to the generous portions of crab, lobster & shrimp! The special was an incredibly seasoned Cajun bone-in ribeye that melted in your mouth. Excellent martinis and impeccable service. We can’t wait to go back!
I noted above that I would recommend Bobby Van's to a friend but I am on the fence about that.
We enjoyed the food but by the time our meal arrived, we had to ask for to-go boxes. It took way too long for our meals to arrive. I have dined here before and never had to wait that long.
The server was excellent and did the best he could to provide us excellent service and was very nice.
I always enjoy eating at Bobby Van's. However, my most recent visit yesterday was really slow. While the waiter was attentive, it took too long for the food to arrive to the table, which an irritant for me.
The food and service were very good overall. Bobby van's is always a good and classy choice for a special evening dinner, celebration or get together. You can never go wrong there with regards to food, ambiance and service.
Excellent food friendly staff. Always professional.
Great burger and skirt steak sandwiches. Carlos, our waiter was great!
They made our wedding anniversary all the more special with superb attentive service with a smile!
My server was very friendly and patient. I appreciated everything he did to make sure I had the perfect Birthday dinner. I will be definitely coming back and hopefully I get the same sever or someone equal as his professionalism.
Service was awful. Waiter inattentive my meal was completely incorrect on first try, my husband's steak had to be sent back because temp was wrong. It was relatively noisy and overpriced. Would never go back.
A very consistent steakhouse convenient to my home. The food is always good, but service is very inconsistent. This time I was not impressed. The Asian Pear Salad is exceptional and the steaks are always good. The wine is a bit skimpy on the pour. The deserts are also excellent.
Server was not attentive but food was amazing. Great atmosphere and plating was gorgeous. Definitely worth the cost. Here’s to hoping the server was just having an”off” evening.
The food was impeccable as always and the service was amazing! They out did themselves by providing not one but two birthday treats for my wife. We're so appreciative and will be back soon. Thanks for making the night especially special.
This review is for the Bobby Van's Grill in Washington DC Cross street Located at the corner of 12th St. NW and New York Avenue NW. The Ambiance low rating was due to the construction going on, otherwise I was very pleased with the meal and the staff. I travel a lot and frequent many restaurants and rarely give a review due to time but must do so today. I was alone, my business associated got stuck at an airport and could not make it in time for dinner so I came to the restaurant alone. Like most high end restaurants, they don't want to tie up a table for just one person, I understand the economics. However in this case I must recognize the evening manager. Her name is Tupuo, she was gracious and even bought me a drink on the house and was so courteous throughout the meal that I was very impressed. I have been to the other Bobby Van's in NY and they remain one of my favorite go to places in NY. What made it extra special and even posted the situation on Facebook because I was so moved. There was an elderly gentlemen having dinner with his family who had a medical episode which caused him to fall to the ground. The staff from Tupuo to my waiter Carlos were so responsive and kind to this gentleman that it moved me. The EMT folks arrived and they were just as professional and caring. In this world (especially D.C.) with so much vitriol I was very impressed and wanted to share this dining experience. Food of course is always great and the Martinez Martini made feel right at home since my name just happens to be Martinez. Merry Christmas to the staff at this fine restaurant. Tupuo, my sincere thanks Joe
The staff was attentive and helpful. The food was prompt, hot, and delicious
I had a dinner party. We got in early and the party slowly arrived. We were treated with love and care by everyone. The bartenders were amazing. The waiters were patient and attentive. The ambience was homey and private even with it being in the open. I love that they cater to big parties without the hassle of reserving a room. The food was phenomenal! I was very impressed. Everyone was very impressed. A must visit again for us and we will be trying their steakhouse as well. I can not recommend this place enough without sounding crazy. Wonderful dining.
My filet was cooked perfectly and the service was incredible!
Had a wonderful birthday dinner for a family members. My only issue was a group of young ladies sitting at a table next to is, they were using their outside voices all evening. It made it hard for our group to concentrate, but other than that everything else was outstanding.
The noise level at the restaurant is extremely high -- from the bar area to the recesses of the restaurant's dining room. Some dinner patrons were literrally shouting and the restaurant's management made no attempt to get them to be respectful of other patrons. Luckily, we were able to relocate to another table, but we could still hear several noisy tables from across the dining room. The food was overcooked (eg. duck breast, crab cakes, asparagus), arrived lukewarm, just tasted ok, but the portions were large. The wait staff was friendly and attentive.
Wonderful venue, especially at Christmas time.
We enjoyed our meal since it was our 52d wedding anniversary and our waitress had been informed of that fact. We had a hanger steak and mashed potatoes and onions and mushrooms. My wife had fresh Rock fish and rizzoto. For desert we had banana bread pudding flambé and I had coffee. The waitress also offered to get me some quarters so I could feed the parking meter across the street from the restaurant. .
Staff was extremely accommodating and adapted to our large group's needs. Food was amazing as well!
