Bluestem Brasserie features a familiar brasserie menu of fresh, simply composed dishes; distinct cocktails; a satisfying wine list with 12 on tap, sourced directly from Napa and Sonoma's finest producers - offered at a great value.
Named after the indigenous North American grass favored by cattle, Bluestem will showcase sustainably produced beef from highly regarded purveyors with an emphasis on whole-animal utilization. Ingredients sourced directly from the ranchers. Savory items are balanced by a dessert menu of classic, brasserie-style selections.
A theme of terroir extends from the menu of house-made items to the carefully crafted wine list.
The Brussels sprouts were the best I've ever had. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Honolulu Hangover for dessert. Great service!
One of my favorite places to go in Union Square. The service is always good and their cheeseplate is outstanding! A great place to go for a night out with friends.
Despite being incredibly busy, the food and service were excellent. Fairly priced and good quality.
We had to ask her for refills a few times
Definitely! Have eaten here a number of times and it has never disappointed us in variety and quality.
Great before theater stop-over! Varied menu included in Sunday Brunch.
We had brunch on my birthday. The food was very fresh & expertly prepared. We all enjoyed our food & plan to return soon!
The atmosphere is great: very relaxed while still sophisticated. The food is wonderful. Portion sizes are appropriate, flavor mixes are thoughtful, and menu is varied to keep it interesting. I want to go back to try more items on the menu.
Food was uninspired. The quinoa stuffed winter squash was roasted squash with a cup of quinoa poured on it. No additional, interesting flavors.
We ordered 3 mains and a share plate. One main came out 5 min before the other 2 mains. The share plate appetizer was last. Amateurs!
Don't go if you have a deadline. We told the waiter we had to be at a show and gave him a specific time deadline--over an hour after we sat down. They did not meet the deadline. I don't think it was the waiter's fault. We waited a long time for our entrees, and they were warm. Thus, I think the kitchen was slow, even though the restaurant was not full. The other problem is that we went during SF Restaurant Week, and no Restaurant Week menu was provided until we asked for it. Even then, the waiter provided only one menu for the 4 of us. Three of us ordered the halibut from the Restaurant Week menu and the fourth person ordered the mussels from the regular menu. All were very good. The waiter was also good. The desserts from the Restaurant Week menu were also good, but we didn't have time to finish them.
Great for before theater. Easy walk to Golden Gate, Orpheum, and Warfield. Good food a tad overpriced. Great cocktails. Fun vibe.
I have been here twice. The food is fine. The service was inconsistent - good and not so good. I came recently for SF restaurant week. They had a fried chicken sandwich, which was pretty good.
5-stars is not enough! The service was amazing - the best we have had in a long time (and we eat out a lot.) My husband and I both had the halibut and it was excellent. The portion size was just right. Had a short walk to the theater afterwards. A perfect evening!
Loved this restaurant! Attractive decor and delicious food. Service was a little slow to bring drinks and not as informative about the menu and the wine (on tap!!), but overall a great experience. Would definitely go back.
Our experience we decent, not great. Food was fine, not special. Noise level was loud. Our waiter seemed overworked and the food came out of the kitchen very slowly. We mentioned as we sat down that we had theater tickets and thought we had plenty of time (1.5 hours for dinner). In the end, it took so long for us to get our food, it was a mad dash to finish dessert (ordered with the pre-fixe dinner or we would have skipped it) and get to the theater. We might try it again if we don't have time constraints.
Food decent, not remarkable. Service rather slow. Let them know if you have a showtime to make.
Excellent staff! Our waiter was knowledgeable and very witty! Our water glasses were constantly full. Food was superb! Ingredients were fresh and perfectly seasoned!
Great culinary experience
Very nice and creative menu. I had a fillet and others had a pork chop and duck. All raved about all the food. Very modern fun place for dinner.
Food and service are consistent and less pricey than similar spots. The brussel sprouts are amazing!
I made the initial reservation for lunch for 3 pp, then changed it the next day to 4 pp. I noted that one guest was gluten free because of celiac disease. The day before the lunch, I was called by the restaurant to both confirm the reservation and that one guest was gluten-free. Upon arrival, we were seated promptly at a booth and the server greeted us warmly and inquired who was the GF guest. That person is a client and travels frequently so she is always prepared to explain her dietary issue. There was no need for that at Bluestem--the server was prepared to indicate which dishes had gluten and suitable for my guest. Lunch arrived within a reasonable amount of time and we all enjoyed our meal. Leftovers for 2 of us were packaged quickly and easily portable in a kraft paper bag with the restaurant name on a sticker to seal it. Bluestem Brasserie remains my "go-to" place for an excellent meal, whether for family, friends or clients.
Came here for lunch before SHN tickets to “Come from Away”. Bartender was great. Loved our Bloody Marys. Asked for extra olives—no problem.
Wait staff was very attentive. Offered several suggestions regarding menu that proved to be delicious!! Will be back!
Loved my duck confit salad with its crisp pork belly bits. Ditto the truffle Parmesan fries. Not so the fried chicken sandwich. It was dry and not very tasty. Service was good. Great location, close but not on top of the noisy throng. would go back.
Their menu was great. We had their winter salad with escarole, the roasted delicata squash and the sausage stuffed pork chop. Everything was delicious and the portions were generous. We look forward to returning and checking out the rest of their selections.
The Bluestem Brasserie is centrally located with great access for visitors and residents alike. The service is friendly and prompt. The menu is eclectic appealing to a variety of tastes. I have enjoyed both dinners and lunch at the restaurant with guests. All agreed on the comfortable atmosphere and great food. Given the location and great food, the prices are a solid value.
Entree portion is too small. We ordered the Halibut, the portion is smaller than average and it was overcooked, the fish was dry and there is no veggie comes with it. It looks like an appetizer portion.
The soup was on the salty side.
Pretty pricey, even for downtown San Francisco, considering the food is about average and portions aren't really big. A small main and a side is definitely going to be above $30.
We probably got some bad luck but we had 3 mistakes on orders for a table of 4, waited a long time to be served and it took us a whole hour and a half to go through lunch.
Slow, inattentive service. Food came out cold after the right order was actually served. This place has gone completely downhill.
Always great food & stellar service at Bluestem!!
This was my second visit to Bluestem. The food is good. Make sure you start with the Deviled Eggs! Filet is good but was completely overcooked the first time (the manager offered me a new one) and slightly overcooked the second. Sides are yummy, especially the brussel sprouts and cornbread. My last visit was to host a business dinner for 10. One of the guests was a Celiac and the menu has no Gluten Free designations. The waiter had to keep running back to question the chef on different items. While the waiter had a great attitude about it, this got old fast. Overall both my visits to this restaurant have been a success. Location is great and staff is friendly and attentive!
Service was amazing and the ambience was super. We were celebrating a coworkers Birthday and the server brought a large delicious piece of cake for the celebration.
lovely bar menu and happy hour drinks were priced perfectly. We didn't order food from happy hour menu as it's mostly fries cooked different ways and not really healthy items so we ordered off main menu. Very pleased with brussel sprouts, a squash side dish and we did the steak Tartare. Tartare bread was so so yummy but the meat itself didn't live up to true Tartare. Yes there was nothing left on the plate. We'll come back again
We went for Sunday brunch. Food was fabulous and I wish we got the name of our waitperson. She was stellar.
It was a friend’s birthday and Bluestem rolled out all the stops! A complimentary cocktail and two desserts.
Server was patient and accommodating. Would recommend!
Service was awful! Got seated an hour after our reservation and the food although a fixed menu was sooo slow. Never offered more drinks. We left before dessert.
We chose to attend the NYE event this year at Bluestem. I’d like to start by saying the food was very good, I had the Filet and it was everything it should have been. The rest of the evening however, was disappointing.
The wait staff was clearly over burdened, our drinks took 30 min to arrive. The five course meal arrived out of order, we had to ask for our champagne for the champagne toast as well as for our desert course...which arrived without any table setting. I wanted to ask for a manager, but decided not to because I didn’t want to wait for NYE 2020 for them to arrive. For a meal that ended up costing $340, the experience was beyond disappointing, I see no reason to return to this restaurant.
We had a great time, although the service was slow, but the wait staff were friendly. Being New Year's eve a lot was going on and we had a great experience. The owners came by to talk to the diners and check on them. That was a nice touch.
Me and my family had dinner on new year's eve and we had a unpleasant surprise. Despite the good food and the funny night's show, they "forgot" to announce on their website that they would be charging $125 dinner/show for new year's eve occasion. That surprise cost us a lot of money, because we had reserved a table without knowing that they wouldn't work with their regular menu (which is way cheaper!) and, on new year's eve without a reservation you don't have much choice other than eating burritos at Embarcadeiro. In addition, the service took a lot of time to deliver the prefixed menu dishes and, they also delivered out of order one of the dishes... Overall, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, specially because of their dishonest in not annoucing their plans!
We always love our time at Bluestem. The atmosphere is great and we love that we can make reservations for brunch.
