Bluestem Brasserie features a familiar brasserie menu of fresh, simply composed dishes; distinct cocktails; a satisfying wine list with 12 on tap, sourced directly from Napa and Sonoma's finest producers - offered at a great value.
Named after the indigenous North American grass favored by cattle, Bluestem will showcase sustainably produced beef from highly regarded purveyors with an emphasis on whole-animal utilization. Ingredients sourced directly from the ranchers. Savory items are balanced by a dessert menu of classic, brasserie-style selections.
A theme of terroir extends from the menu of house-made items to the carefully crafted wine list.
AMAZING!!!! This was such a wonderful experience - Adam was fabulous getting us a perfect spot to meet and our waiter was phenomenal. I would highly recommend Bluestem Brasserie - the food was fantastic (don't miss the cornbread) - the service was over the top - it was quiet enough for interaction with everyone. Thank You Bluestem Brasserie for making our lunch so special.
Did a surprise trip to San Francisco with my girlfriend over this last weekend. We went to Bluestem for Saturday morning brunch. Service was spot on from arrival. Hostess was great, seated us almost right away even though the restaurant was busy. Our serve was perfect. A gentleman from Rhode Island, help us not only create the perfect meal to start our day but gave us options for the evening and lunch. The manager stopped by to see how we enjoyed our meal and was ultra personable and polite. The only down side is we didn’t go back for Sunday brunch. They set the bar for brunch in San Francisco and we will absolutely be back.
Fries are to die for as well as the fried chicken sandwich and burger! Great place!
Always a pleasure coming here. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, service quick and food/drinks on point.
Wedge salad - watery blue cheese
Focaccia and burrata - burrata syrup too sweet should just stick to freshness of burrata and not take away the taste with a sweet syrup. Focaccia should have been warm
Butchers cut was ok cooked medium rare to order but tasted too grainy and not very buttery. Worse steak we have had in a long time.
Rib eye - the same as butchers cut. The bleu cheese accompanied was very light and lacked chunks of cheese. Salt and vinegar potatoes - potatoes were bland and just salty
Frites that came with butchers cut were mediocre and were a little dry inside
We ordered manhattans and were charged $25 per drink way more than a cocktail bar in the city and seemed to be gouging tourists. The manhattans were good however.
Then there was a wet dog smell in our seating area.
For the cost of entrees $30-$50 for steaks for example the television playing sports and then the pop music seemed out of place.
Perhaps this is what to expect at a restaurant in union square?
I wouldn’t come back to this restaurant which is rare for me to say as most restaurants in SF at this price are great to exceptional.
Unfortunately this was a special night out without kids and pre going to a concert and this was a disappointment
We ate at this restaurant twice in one week. The first time for lunch, the second for dinner. I was impressed both times. The reason we went back was for the absolutely fabulous "bite" on the starter menu. It was understated as Chicken liver mousse on toast with seasonal accompaniments. The mousse was creamy, the toast was Challah and the accompaniments were toasted pecans, sliced red grapes and pomegranate seeds with a sprinkling of parsley on top of the mousse. Talk about Heaven on a Plate. Lunch also consisted of a Heirloom tomato and roasted Corn and fresh greens salad for me and the Beef au jus sandwich for my husband. Both were very good and hit the spot. Dinner for me was the house made pasta with fall veggies and goat cheese and for my husband Butcher's Cut Steak Frites. Service and food were excellent.
While the food is definitely not as good as it once was, I still appreciate the ambiance, convenient location, and good service, as well as a noise level that allows for easy conversation. The chicken liver mousse was terrific, but the Kennebec fries (which we remembered as being a standout) were pretty flavorless, and the mussels, chicken sandwich, and pork belly were all just okay.
Very good food. Had mussels, fish, Mac and cheese, soup. Had to pay extra for bread for mussels☹️. Service was slow. Overall it was a good new place to go.
Five colleagues and I had dinner at Bluestem after checking into the Marriott Marquis a few steps away. The vibe in the restaurant was cool Californian, and the food/local brews were fresh and delicious. I had a chicken sandwich with a side salad. The waiter suggested a semillion wine in place of a pinot grigio. The wine was exceptionally good. My colleagues also had an assortment of sandwiches, salads, and drinks. The total bill was $415 with tax and tip for six people.
Always great food, always decent prices, always good service. The food makes this one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. It’s prices make it perfect for taking business partners or clients to lunch.
Really loved my half roast chicken and tomato salad. Steve was our waiter, and he was 5 star. Gave us plenty of time to order, and was very efficient about filling up our glasses. Thank you to the maître d for his attention too. I'll be back!
Food was good, service was good, but their wine glass pours are less than standard. A glass of wine should be a quarter of a 750 ml bottle. The glass was maybe half of a standard glass pour.
Perfect location for a team dinner for 10. Good entries. Ok apps. Could use a few more selections to share.
Se loved this place. Great location, too
Service, food and ambiance was excellent! We were there for hours and the staff was absolutely great to us. :)
Lovely place for a special weekend brunch. Bring a sweater - the dining room was quite cold.
The hostess was a bit slow. Everything else was great.
Good place with easy access from convention center. Food and drinks were really good!
So great! Food was amazing and the employees were awesome! The manager even brought us a complementary cake and it was so good! Will come back for sure.
Birthday dinner for my husband
First, making (and changing) my reservation through OpenTable was easy. Second, the staff never disappoints. Third, they can handle you and your group, big or small. I had the chance to get to know the Asst. GM John on one of my visits and what an added treat. Billy Ray was a GREAT server too! The wonderful nature of this staff... on top of the great food.. made for wonderful business dinners we had there 2 nights in a row. I will continue to be a patron of Bluestem.
I ate there for lunch and dinner. Same menu and was very limited.
Table service is not the most attentive or expeditious. We tried on several occasions to signal the server was failed since he walked around with his eyes down between tables. Just did not feel very hospitable dining experience. Food was good but for a lunch meal, the full entree prices seemed very high for the area, comparing similar quality sit down environments.
I like this restaurant. It doesn't try to do too much but what it does is delicious. From the bar tenders tot he wait staff to the managers, they seem very well trained to put me first.. The food was surprising in its excellence. The Mushroom and Broccoli side, had very unusual mushrooms. The Salmon mouse was creamy. The Watermelon salad had very unusal and seductive dressing. I had the half roast chicken and it was all there and very moist. No one complained about any of the entries. And the wine list was a bit pricey so we opted for a selection from the draft wines and it was very very good. You'll see me there often for the food and the great location. Easy walk to The Golden Gate for plays or the Moscone for conferences!
Love this place. Every time I go into the city to see a play or musical we eat dinner here. Never disappoints. Service is great and food is delicious.
Bluestem Brasserie is a go-to restaurant for me more out of the balance of convenient location and quality than anything else. It's not cheap, but it won't break the bank. It has an upscale feel without being overpriced. That said, our recent experience was a little shaky. We were a party of 9 at the corner redwood burl table, and our server could not have been more lovely. But the pace of the service--the restaurant as a whole was not super-busy--was incredibly slow, and one of our group didn't get her entree until the rest of us were nearly done. I'll be back, but watching you, BB.
Above average experience. Lunch meeting. Very busy at lunch. Food was eclectic. Not much variety.
Food is delicious but service is SLOW! Waiters are forgetful and bar is slow.
We arrived earlier than our brunch reservation was made for, but the hostess was able to seat us at a nice, quiet corner table. Our waiter was extremely nice and when we asked about his favorite dishes, he gave us several choices and why they were so good in his opinion...he did not steer us wrong! I ordered a very refreshing cocktail and the steak & eggs combo, which was delicious. My sister had the burger and if the moaning with pleasure after every bite was any indication, I think she loved her meal! Bluestem Brasserie is a restaurant I'll go back to and recommend to my friends.
We gathered for a birthday brunch for my boyfriend, and it was delicious! We had the croque madame, the cinnamon roll, and biscuits and gravy. Everything was delicious, well presented and hot from the kitchen. Generous portions, decent coffee and excellent service. Sadly, they didn’t offer us a treat for our birthday celebrant, but we were so full, I don’t think we could have managed one more bite. We will definitely be back.
An excellent spot for lunch(and I'm sure dinner), in the heart of downtown, a couple blocks from Union Square or Metreon, and just down the street from Westfield mall.
The service here is awesome. They will make pretty much any IBA cocktail you name off the menu, which is rare even for restaurants in the city--most places lack certain ingredients needed to make some off-the-beaten-path drinks! If you request a written message on a dessert plate, the waiter will be well informed and more than on top of it. They will not give you a hard time if you stay past paying for the check either, assuming it isn't a busy rush period. I greatly appreciated this part of the experience.
The food is pretty good all around. Corn bread is tasty. Fries are solid, but I'd skip the truffle parmesan, which was a bit too cheesy for my taste. The yellow tail was the highlight entree. The duck confit salad was a bit on the salty side but still well executed. The yellow cake with Bavarian custard/cream we had in the end was an excellent end to our meal. Truly one of those places that we would like to come back to!
Great place for pre-theater dinner. Close to BART and easy walk to the theaters. Nice wine list, fun cocktails, and good food. The fried chicken sandwich was very good, which was what most of our party got. The Hangover cake for dessert - the bomb. Portions are large, so entres can be shared easily.
Service was excellent. Wonderful evening all around.
BB has a very eclectic menu, and each dish we got was so tasty. The restaurant was quiet and easy, and the background music songfest was amazing. Our waitress was the best! The only downside was that the bar took a long time to get our drinks prepared.
Service was super slow and rather unapologetic.
We had called in advance advising of a special occasion and they confirmed they would do something. Then they did nothing.
Food when it arrived was generally very tasty.
Very nice environment
Boring and ordinaty food.
Nothing negative to say at all. Great food and great service. Location good for Union Square visitors. (For beer lovers, the Porters (dark) is well worth a try.) Enjoy!
We had a wonderful brunch here...and delicious. Try the cinnamon roll. It is to die for! But all the dishes were incredible and it is a beautiful restaurant!
Restaurant was empty, despite that the service was not good, the waiter tried too hard and the food was definitely not at the level expected! A real shame!
