About Bluehour

Bluehour means different things to different people. In French literature it describes any time of day "of heightened emotion." In Portland it has come to mean "a great place to dine."

As the premier modern restaurant in the Pearl District, Bluehour opened its doors in 2000, with what Gourmet Magazine describes as, "the most sophisticated, contemporary food in town." Guests choose between the elegant dining room or the casual café and bar.

Surprising and delicious describes the Modern Northwest cuisine we create in the Bluehour kitchen each night. The menu is printed daily, so come in and enjoy Chef Chris Carriker's seasonally inspired menu.

Thanksgiving dinner. Three course prix fixe menu with several choices for each course. Food was well-prepared, albeit very salty. Server did a good job describing the dishes and the sommelier and I had a nice chat about the wine we brought. This place could easily get 5 stars from me, if the salt was more under control.

Great brunch, above the usual quality and choices. We enjoyed the corn beef hash and a Bleu Burger. Will return

John was amazing! He was attentive without being over bearing. He guided us through our meal and confirmed what great choices we made. We will be back for sure.

The occasion was date night and we had not been to Bluehour for years. Many positives with this restaurant, the first of which was the delightful hostess who greeted us. If a first impression is important, she is a great first impression—stylish, impeccably groomed, striking appearance and a lovely personality. We were immediately seated at a very nice table and enjoyed Bluehour's great Martini's. One interesting thing we noticed was that the restaurant and bar were full with everyone seeming to be talking, yet the room was quiet and we could easily have conversation at our table—a rare treat in crowded restaurants. The only negative was that our food, while very tasty, was served rather cold. We will definitely return soon.

I’m probably not the best person for this review because I like the simple things at a fair price. If that is what you like then this is not the place for you.
When dinner cost more then a two night stay at a hotel, your charging to much in my opinion. Dinner for a party of three consisted of, three salads, three dinners, two desserts, and 4 drinks.
With tip the bill was around $260+
Everything was good, just not $260+ good.

Nice ambiance, great cocktails, and good food at reasonable prices. I only have 2 issues:

1. We listed the reservation as a special occasion, but there was never acknowledgement of the restaurant as such. I'm curious why we enter this data if there is no action taken upon it.

2. Our waiter was very solicitous and deferential to one male member of our party, but seemed to ignore the women. I expected to receive the same attention as the man at the head of the table, especially since it was my birthday.

The restaurant was perfect except I had noted in our Open Table reservation that we were celebrating my husband's birthday. When we about to be seated, I made sure and mentioned it again to the hostess and she said that she knew that and had alerted our server, however, he never made any mention of it. That was a big disappointment especially since other reviews had specifically talked about celebrating a birthday at Blue Hour and how the restaurant made the birthday person feel very special.. Fortunately, everything else was great..the food was superb and love the quiet atmosphere. We will return.

Bluehour is always a nice meal. The service was attentive and friendly. We had two fish dishes, salmon and halibut, they were cooked nicely and accompanied with good sides. We also had the risotto which was okay, but a dash thick, but the mushrooms were nice. The cocktails were great - always a good cocktail here.

We went there for my husband’s birthday. The menus had a personalized happy birthday note at the top which started the dinner with a very pleasant surprise. They offered us champagne on the house to start the celebration and the waiter did a really good job! They even gave us an extra free dessert and made sure to bring it in with a candle to finish off the celebration! All in all it was such a good experience!!!

Haven't been to Bluehour for quite a while. The food was excellent as is the ambience! Drinks are expensive and the overall value is average. It's certainly not a bargain! It's a good place for expense account types, and perhaps special occasions, but for us it won't be an everyday experience...

One of the quieter, dining experiences we have had in a while, especially in the Pearl.
having just returned from France where we not only loved the food but we especially noticed THE SERVICE. Not even Blue Hour can boast great service especially the night we were there. It's the small things that count. Overall a B- and disappointed.

Food presentation was good but it had no flavor. Salmon was way undercooked. If we wanted sushi we would have went to a sushi place. Salads were flavorless and starters lacked any creativity. Our waiter acted like he was better than us. We dine out a lot and like to try new places, we will never go here again.

The manager is with class and you can feel it that you received the best service of all! Hostess was lovely and the chef offered us complimentary appetizers which are unique in service, flavor and design. Food is very good, tasty and well prepared. Did not feel any up sell pressure or treated differently because we ordered less (light dinner type people).
Overall excellent experience!

The waiter was shameless in eyeballing my wife and making off putting, flirtatious comments. Maybe that was his way of trying to get a better tip, but it was super creepy. No one wants to make a scene in a restaurant, so I decided just let it go instead of getting crazy. The table seating is too close. You can hear everyone else's conversation word for word. The food was so so at best. Steak was undercooked. Still cold on inside.

We are never disappointed at Blue Hour, and last Saturday was no exception. After a delightful appetizer of various cheeses and bread, we each had an entree that was well prepared and elegantly presented. They have an extensive wine list and the servers are knowledgeable. I had an unusual cocktail request and their bartender had no problem executing it. To top it off, their chocolate delice dessert was a melange of flavor without being overpowering. A truly amazing dinner. Highly recommended.

I made quite a few visits to Blue Hour while visiting Portland during the years prior to my relocation to this area. I have never been disappointed by the food which has always been excellent. The busy happy hour bar scene makes the noise level quite high on many evenings, but my last visit was on a Sunday which quiet prevailed and quite conversation was easy.

I'm sure I'll come back regularly.

Blue Hour is an elegant, white tablecloth restaurant with great food. More suits and dresses than cut off jeans, but not stuffy or pretentious. They have a great terrace for fine weather and huge windows overlooking the Pearl's vibrant 13th Street historic district. Our Oregon tuna was superb, as was the duck confit.

Anniversary Dinner at BlueHour.
I would have given BlueHour a 5-star. Except, my husbands 1st entree of tuna was not tasty. The server quickly offered to replace it. He ordered the chicken dish as his replacement, it was delicious. Service was great!

Initial greet and seat, really friendly. The poached eggs on pork belly benedict were hard and not oozy and creamy. Disappointing. When the waiter brought my coffee, spilled quite a bit onto the saucer which melted the sugar on the saucer into a sticky mess. French toast looked amazing and the eater of said French toast cleaned his plate. The donuts with the raspberry gel were delicious. Service was good.

Brunch was great! My fiance made reservations for my bday, and to our surprise they had $2 mimosas! Each dish we ordered had such great flavor. He had the Whisky Tango and I had the Lumber Jack breakfast sandwich....so de-lish! Awesome service, as well, our waiter was great! I will definitely go back for brunch, and look forward to trying the dinner menu.
